CBCT Segmentation and Additive Manufacturing for the Management of Root Canals with Ledges: A Case Report and Technique.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) assessment of a ledge could be useful to a clinician; however, using this information effectively during a treatment procedure can be challenging. Advanced additive manufacturing technologies combined with semi-automated segmentation of root canals can help simulate the ledge and help in management of these iatrogenic complications. A patient presented after unsuccessful root canal treatment with a ledge on the left mandibular first molar. A CBCT was taken, and the images imported into a segmentation software (Mimics, Materialise). The canal was isolated, a

Can Shrews Avoid Competition When Hutchinson's Ecological Rule Is Disobeyed?

It is established that Hutchinson's ratio of the weights and sizes of the body and foraging organs in similar species is not fully obeyed in shrew species of the genus Sorex. Similarity in the centroid size of the mandible was observed in the large species S. isodon and S. araneus. Differences in the shape of the mandible, which is intensely used in foraging, were detected between the species by geometric morphometrics. Interspecific differences were found in mandibular indices, which reflect trophic specialization and functional features of the mandibles. Shrews can therefore avoid competitio

Eptesicus nilssonii varangus subsp. nov. (Vespertilionidae, Chiroptera) from the Lower Pleistocene of the Taurida Cave in Crimea.

A new northern serotine bat Eptesicus nilssonii varangus subsp. nov. is described on the base of an incomplete skull and a mandibular fragment from the Lower Pleistocene deposits of the Taurida cave in the central Crimea. This is the earliest record of the species. The presence of E. nilssonii (Keyserling et Blasius, 1839) in the Early Pleistocene bat assemblage of the Taurida cave indicates that this species lived in the south of Eastern Europe before its spreading into Central and Southeastern Europe.

Optimization of a concentrated growth factor/mesoporous bioactive glass composite scaffold and its application in rabbit mandible defect regeneration.

Maxillofacial bone defect repair and regeneration remains a tremendous challenge in the field of stomatology. However, the limited osteoinductivity of artificial materials and the high cost of bioactive agents restrain their clinical translation. This study aimed to construct an economical and efficient concentrated growth factor/mesoporous bioactive glass (CGF/MBG) composite scaffold for bone regeneration. The biochemical composition and biological effects of different forms of CGFs were systematically compared, and the results showed that CGF-conditioned medium effectively promoted prolifera

A new large pantherine and a sabre-toothed cat (Mammalia, Carnivora, Felidae) from the late Miocene hominoid-bearing Khorat sand pits, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, northeastern Thailand.

We describe two large predators from the hominoid-bearing Khorat sand pits, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, northeastern Thailand: a new genus of pantherine, Pachypanthera n. gen., represented by partial mandible and maxilla and an indeterminate sabre-toothed cat, represented by a fragment of upper canine. The morphological characters of Pachypanthera n. gen., notably the large and powerful canine, the great robustness of the mandibular body, the very deep fossa for the m. masseter, the zigzag HSB enamel pattern, indicate bone-cracking capacities. The genus is unique among Felidae as it has one of

A new species of Comahuesuchus Bonaparte, 1991 (Crocodyliformes: Notosuchia) from the Upper Cretaceous of Neuquén, Lake Barreales, Patagonia, Argentina.

Notosuchian crocodyliforms were major components of the South American Cretaceous biota and, for over 125 years, paleontological fieldwork in this continent recovered several well-preserved fossils of these animals. They are largely recognized for terrestrial life and specialized feeding habits, frequently presenting bizarre taxa such as Comahuesuchus. A new species, Comahuesuchus bonapartei n. sp. (MUCPv 597; cast MN), is described from geological strata of Sierra Barrosa Formation (Upper Turonian) and Portezuelo Formation (Lower Coniacian) of Lake Barreales, Patagonia, Argentina. The new fos

Example of digital exhibition in anthropology and medical education.

Technology brings new opportunities in terms of education and research, and global pandemics such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic require online education-style approaches. Visualisation is of great importance in digitised education. In this study, materials that are of interest to the disciplines of anthropology, dentistry and medicine were selected from the skeletal materials and presented in a virtual exhibition. The mandible samples were digitised by photogrammetric method, and the exhibition was made navigable by using the Unity game engine program. In the exhibition, information on denta

Assessment of the correlation between mandibular radiomorphometric patterns and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry measurements for screening bone mineral density.

The objective of this study was to investigate the correlation between scores for femoral and lumbar spine bone mineral density (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry [DXA]) and visual, qualitative mandibular bone pattern assess¬ments (mandibular cortical index, trabecular bone pattern, and visual mandibular cortical width) as well as age and body mass index. Three trained observers evaluated 200 panoramic radiographs and 200 femoral and lumbar spine DXA measurements from 100 male and 100 female participants. The κ test showed an acceptable agreement among observers (0.73; P = 0.003). The Shapiro-W

Peripheral calcifying odontogenic cyst: a case report and comprehensive review of 60 years of literature.

Peripheral Calcifying Odontogenic Cyst (PCOC) is the extraosseous form of calcifying odontogenic cyst that is limited to peripheral soft tissue without bony involvement. This case report presents a case of PCOC manifested as a progressive growth of gingival mass in a young male treated with excisional biopsy. Histological examination confirmed diagnosis of PCOC with presence of characteristic ghost cells and sporadic calcifications. No recurrence of the lesion and no complication were noted at three-year follow-up. Review of available literature on PCOC noted a predilection of occurrence in th

Desmoplastic Fibroma of the Mandible: A Case Without Recurrence After Enucleation.

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a rare, benign, yet locally aggressive bone tumor. It frequently affects the facial bones, and the mandible is the most commonly affected site. Treatment of choice is the removal of the tumor with resection of surrounding bone due to its aggressive behavior. We report a case of DF where the tumor showed resolution and almost complete bone deposition following enucleation. Although DF has a high recurrence rate, the patient remains disease-free 31 months post-surgery.

Cranial Juvenile Psammomatoid Ossifying Fibroma: A Rare Entity.

Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is an unusual fibro-osseous lesion primarily occurring in children and young adolescents. Anatomically, this lesion could predominantly arise from the bilateral orbits, paranasal sinuses, maxilla, or mandible. Although it is a benign lesion of osseous origin, it is an aggressive variant of ossifying fibroma of the jaw. Due to the aggressive nature of this lesion and its high tendency for recurrence, early radiological detection and prompt surgical treatment are required. The histologic diagnosis of this entity is purely based on hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), but

Anatomical network modules of the human central nervous-craniofacial skeleton system.

Anatomical network analysis (AnNA) is a systems biological framework based on network theory that enables anatomical structural analysis by incorporating modularity to model structural complexity. The human brain and facial structures exhibit close structural and functional relationships, suggestive of a co-evolved anatomical network. The present study aimed to analyze the human head as a modular entity that comprises the central nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and craniofacial skeleton. An AnNA model was built using 39 anatomical nodes from the brain, spinal cord, and cranio

Robot-guided osteotomy in fibula free flap mandibular reconstruction: a preclinical study.

Various methods currently exist to guide fibular osteotomy positioning in fibula free flap mandibular reconstruction, but patient-specific navigation methods and cutting guides require experience, and may be time-consuming and/or expensive. This study describes a robot-guided osteotomy technique for mandible reconstruction using a fibula free flap according to virtual preoperative planning. The method was assessed on five 3D-printed models and a cadaveric model. The precision of the robot-guided osteotomy was evaluated by measuring the deviations between the lengths and angles of the fragments

Resin-bonded fixed dental prosthesis versus implant-supported single crowns in the anterior region.

BACKGROUND: Different treatment options exist for replacement of an anterior tooth, and as implant-supported single crowns (ISSC) and resin-bonded fixed dental prosthesis (RBFDPs) both are widespread treatment options, it is of clinical relevance to know which treatment modality can be considered superior. PURPOSE: The purpose of this comparative study was to evaluate the 3- and 5-year survival and failure rate of tooth-supported resin-bonded fixed dental prosthesis compared to implant-supported single crowns. The null hypothesis was that there was no significant difference in survival rate,

Analgesic effect of a lidocaine-ropivacaine mixture for extraction of impacted mandibular third molars: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: The painless postoperative period can be significantly prolonged by using long-acting local anesthetics such as ropivacaine, though these local anesthetics are known for their slower onset of action. To compensate for this, a mixture of short-onset (e.g., lidocaine) and long-acting local anesthetics is used. However, the efficacy of such an anesthetic cocktail has not been elucidated in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To address the research purpose, this prospective randomized controlled trial included 56 patients scheduled for impacted mandibu
