Risk assessment of mandibular incisive canal perforation during dental implant surgery in the anterior edentulous mandible: a virtual implant placement study using cone beam computed tomography.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of mandibular incisive canal (MIC) perforation caused by implants placed on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images in the edentulous mandibular anterior region. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 1200 dental implants were virtually inserted on 150 eligible CBCT scans. The relationship of different implant sizes with the incidence of MIC perforation and the relationship between crest height and perforation were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 1200 virtual implant applications were performed on 150 patients. In 87% of cases, MIC was identifie

Retrieval of a displaced implant from the mandibular body: A clinical report.

The posterior mandible is often regarded as a reliable area for achieving primary stability during implant placement. However, in rare instances, implant displacement can occur in this region because of a significant decrease in bone density. Typically, surgical procedures such as the lateral or crestal approach have been used to remove displaced implants, requiring extensive bone removal and postponing implant placement for between 3 and 6 months. This clinical report presents an uncommon occurrence of implant displacement in the posterior mandible and introduces a less invasive approach to r

Does leucocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin enhance neurosensory recovery after genioplasty? A double-blind, split-mouth, randomised clinical trial.

Neurosensory disturbances (NSD) are common after genioplasty. In this study we aimed to assess the recovery of NSDs with or without leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) following genioplasty. In this double-blind, split-mouth, randomised clinical trial, L-PRF was applied around the mental nerve at the osteotomy site in genioplasty (treatment side). The contralateral side was considered the control side. Two-point discrimination (TPD) test, brush test, and self-reported NSDs (SR-NSD) were used to determine NSD at one, four, and 12 months after genioplasty. Twenty patients were studied. A

Immediate versus conventional loading of mandibular implant-retained overdentures: a 3-year follow-up of a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: There is a scarcity of randomized clinical trials (RCT) that report medium- and long-term results and a lack of consensus in the literature on the predictability of immediately loaded unsplinted narrow diameter implants supporting mandibular overdentures. This RCT compared the performance of conventional (CL) and immediate loading (IL) of mandibular overdentures retained by two narrow-diameter implants for 3 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients from an RCT treated with CL or IL were invited to attend to 2- and 3-year follow-ups. Clinical, radiographic, functional, and oral healt

B-Cell Lymphoma of Mandible: A Unique Case Report with Diagnostic Perplexity.

Lymphoma in the jaw bone is a rare malignant neoplasm with heterogeneous nature diagnosis of which requires utmost knowledge of cellular morphology and tissue architecture. The lineage of the neoplastic lymphocytes, whether it is B- or T-cell or mixed in nature, is designated by cluster of differentiation numbers. Broad classification of malignant lymphoma includes Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma which have various subtypes. An unusual case of a B-cell lymphoma in the mandible in a middle-aged male patient is presented herewith clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features.

KED gene expression in early response to wounding stress in tomato plants.

The wounding-responsive KED gene, named for its coding for a lysine (K), glutamic acid (E), and aspartic acid (D)-rich protein, is widely present among land plants. However, little is known about its regulation or function. In this study, we found that transcription of the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) KED gene, SlKED, was rapidly and transiently elevated by wounding or ethephon treatment. Compared to the wild-type plants, the CRISPR/Cas9-mediated SlKED knockout plants did not exhibit altered expression patterns for genes involved in hormone biosynthesis or stress signaling, suggesting a lack

Incorporation of the Altered Cast Technique in the Fabrication Workflow of an Implant-Assisted Removable Partial Denture (IARPD) for an Elderly Patient.

Implants are currently used to serve as abutments for implant-assisted removable partial dentures (IARPDs) to facilitate retention and support of the prosthesis. Implants are proposed in cases of posterior edentulous areas to convert Kennedy Class I or II to Class III or when the preparation of existing teeth to serve as abutments is contraindicated. The purpose of this report is to describe the protocol applied to fabricate an IARPD to restore a Kennedy Class II mandible of an elderly patient by incorporating traditional methods, such as the altered cast technique. Each step of the clinical p

Reversible Effects of Functional Mandibular Lateral Shift on Masticatory Muscles in Growing Rats.

In this study, we aimed to determine the effects of functional mandibular lateral shift (FMLS) on the muscle mass, fiber size, myosin heavy chain fiber type, and related gene expression in masticatory muscles (masseter and temporalis), as well as whether the baseline levels could be recovered after FMLS correction in growing rats. The FMLS appliance was placed to shift the mandible leftward by approximately 2 mm. After FMLS placement for 2 and 4 weeks, the muscles on the left side had significantly lower wet weight, mean cross-sectional area, and proportion of type IIa fibers than those on the

Clinical Stability of Bespoke Snowman Plates for Fixation following Sagittal Split Ramus Osteotomy of the Mandible.

Maxillofacial skeletal surgery often involves the use of patient-specific implants. However, errors in obtaining patient data and designing and manufacturing patient-specific plates and guides can occur even with accurate virtual surgery. To address these errors, bespoke Snowman plates were designed to allow movement of the mandible. This study aimed to compare the stability of bespoke four-hole miniplates with that of a bespoke Snowman plate for bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO), and to present a method to investigate joint cavity changes, as well as superimpose virtual and actu

Biomechanical Implications of Mandibular Flexion on Implant-Supported Full-Arch Rehabilitations: A Systematic Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular flexion (MF) is a complex biomechanical phenomenon, which involves a deformation of the mandible, due mainly to the contraction of the masticatory muscles, and it can have numerous clinical effects. The deformation of the lower jaw caused by mandibular flexion is generally very small, and it is often overlooked and considered irrelevant from a clinical point of view by many authors; however, it should be important to remember that median mandibular flexure (MMF) has a multifactorial aetiology. The main aim of the current systematic review is to highlight the different fa
