Association of bone mineral density with perioperative hidden blood loss in older adults undergoing intramedullary nailing for unstable intertrochanteric fractures.

BACKGROUND: The influence of bone mineral density (BMD) on hidden blood loss (HBL) in older patients with unstable intertrochanteric fractures treated with intramedullary nailing (IMN) is underexplored. The current retrospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the relationship between BMD and perioperative HBL in these cases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 115 patients aged > 60 years undergoing IMN between January 2022 and December 2024 were included. Data included demographics, BMD T score, preoperative hemoglobin (Hb), medical history, and HBL(calculated using the Nadler formula). Spearm

Heat-related illness and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: causal inference using marginal structural models.

BACKGROUND: Heat-related illness (HRI) may serve as a more reliable individual-level indicator of extreme heat exposure compared to ambient temperature, which has spatial autocorrelation problems. This study aimed to provide causal evidence for the association between HRI and the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted involving 1,392,876 Korean individuals who regularly participated in health screenings provided by the National Health Insurance Services. Using data from 2009 to 2021, both HRI and COPD were identified using pri

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Acute Acoustic Trauma: Blast versus Noise-Induced Hearing Loss.

BACKGROUND: Blast injuries impair hearing through several mechanisms that are distinct from other causes of acute acoustic trauma (AAT). OBJECTIVES: To compare blast injured patients to those exposed to noise alone in their auditory response to hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy with oral steroids. METHODS: Adult patients with evidence of a previously undocumented ≥ 30 dB pure-tone threshold within 30 days of AAT were treated with a combination of one 2.5 atm HBO therapy session for 90 minutes daily with oral prednisone. Exposure was classified by history as blast (for explosion-induced AAT) or

Rumination, but Not Reflection, Predicts the Reporting of Post-concussive Symptoms in a Non-clinical Sample.

OBJECTIVE: Although traditionally associated with mild head trauma, post-concussive symptoms are commonly reported across both healthy and other clinical populations. Existing research indicates that individuals with depression report high levels of post-concussive symptoms, though the underlying causes of this association remain unknown. The current study aimed to explore potential factors underlying this relationship: specifically, how maladaptive and adaptive self-focused cognitive coping styles, namely, rumination and reflection, respectively, differentially contribute to post-concussive s

Associations Between Blast Exposures and Intestinal Permeability and Neurotrauma Symptoms During Mortar Fire Military Tactical Training Operations.

INTRODUCTION: Military members are exposed in combat and training to recognized traumatic brain injury (TBI)-causing events and other sub-concussive events that result in physical, psychological, and physiological impacts. Studies by this team and others involving Service Members (SMs) engaged in tactical training operations with repeated exposure to low level blast (LLB) have shown associations with concussion-like symptomology as well as transient decrements in performance, blood-based neurotrauma biomarkers, and perturbations in epigenome and transcriptome profiles, as well as alterations i

Patient reported cannabis use is associated with greater 24-hour postoperative opioid use but shorter length of stay in isolated tibial shaft fractures.

PURPOSE: This study investigates postoperative morphine milligram equivalent (MME) consumption and healthcare utilization in patients using cannabis with tibial shaft fractures treated with intramedullary nail (IMN). METHODS: A retrospective study at a single-center academic level 1 trauma center was conducted. This included patients with closed, isolated tibial shaft fractures treated with IMN. Patients were grouped based on self-reported cannabis use and compared using demographics, relevant history, comorbidities, baseline medication use, inpatient healthcare utilization, and readmission. Chronic Silicone Embolism Syndrome.

Chronic silicone embolism represents a rare complication associated with silicone breast implants. With the increasing number of breast augmentations and reconstructive surgeries performed worldwide, awareness of implant-related pulmonary pathology is becoming increasingly important. This issue gained more public attention after the Poly Implant Prothèse scandal, which involved the use of cheaper industrial-grade silicone with a significantly higher risk of implant rupture. Here, we present a 54-year-old woman with a history of bilateral implant rupture, to highlight implant-related complicati

From Hunger to Hospitality: Food, Memory, and Collective Identity in Mohammed Dib's La Grande Maison and Diana Abu-Jaber's Crescent.

BACKGROUND: This study explored food memory in Mohammed Dib's La Grande Maison and Diana Abu-Jaber's Crescent. Recent scholarship conceptualizes food as a symbolic and cultural medium that shapes memory, identity, exile, trauma, and belonging rather than merely satisfying physical needs. The analysis reveals how, in both novels, food serves as a medium for communicating and representing historical experience and collective identity. METHODS: Methodologically, the paper uses a qualitative comparative literary approach, comprising close reading of selected passages that address hunger, bread, c

Depression is both a risk factor for and outcome from traumatic brain injury in UK Biobank (N = 502,356).

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a known risk factor for poorer later-life outcomes and earlier mortality, but its association with psychological health is less well-characterized. We tested for associations between TBI and depression, each ascertained multiple ways, and in opposing directions (depression predicting TBI; TBI predicting depression). METHODS: Using UK Biobank data (N = 502,356) we investigated bi-directional associations between TBI (ICD-10 coded broad- or narrow-band TBI) and depression (self-report and/or incident ICD-10 coded). We tested this in each direction: ba

Individual characteristics associated with youth symptom reports and persisting symptoms after concussion.

Dissonant approaches for measuring persisting symptoms after concussion (PSaC) make it difficult to predict who will experience prolonged symptoms. We sought to identify medical and sociodemographic characteristics associated with symptom burden and assess how such factors shape symptom evolution and PSaC classification after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). This analysis involved 1947 Post-Concussion Symptom Scale reports from 1117 youths (11-21 years): 380 with mTBI, 737 without mTBI (194 healthy non-mTBI; 543 non-mTBI with underlying medical conditions). Multivariate regressions were use

Childhood maltreatment and early-onset substance use: sex differences in the impact of various types of maltreatment and psychiatric comorbidity.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment significantly increases the risk of early substance use and psychiatric disorders; however, the sex differences in this relationship and the varying effects of different types of maltreatment in youths remain largely unexplored. Therefore, this study aimed to explore sex differences in the relationship between various maltreatment subtypes and the onset of early substance use. It also sought to examine how other indirect forms of mistreatment, such as household dysfunction, affect the age at which substance use begins. METHODS: This multicenter study involved

Adverse Childhood Experiences Exacerbate Neurobehavioral and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms Among Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence-Related Head Trauma.

At least 27% of women who report a history of intimate partner violence (IPV) also report experiencing IPV-related head trauma (IPV-HT) or probable brain injury (IPV-BI). Prior studies of non-IPV-related traumatic BI and IPV-BI suggest that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may be associated with the severity of common neurobehavioral symptoms after the injury, potentially due to their association with elevated post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. This study sought to examine PTSD symptom severity as an intermediary of the relationship between ACEs and measures of symptoms common

Clinicopathological study of chronic traumatic encephalopathy pathology in a population-based cohort.

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease linked to repetitive traumatic brain injury, but its prevalence and risk factors in the general population remain poorly defined. We investigated CTE neuropathological changes (CTE-NC) in an admixed, population-based clinicopathological cohort. Neuropathological evaluation was conducted on brain samples from 1151 individuals in the University of São Paulo Biobank for Aging Studies collected from 2004 to 2022. CTE-NC and aging-related tau astrogliopathy (ARTAG) were assessed across 14 963 histological slides using

Determinants of fractional CO2 laser therapy utilization: Demographic, clinical, and psychosocial predictors.

BACKGROUND: Fractional CO2 laser therapy (FCO2LT) is an effective treatment for hypertrophic scars (HTS); however, access and utilization remain low. METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 3282 patients initially admitted to or treated at an ABA-verified burn unit within a level 1 trauma center (2017-2025), including those referred to affiliated institutions, was analyzed. Demographic, clinical, and insurance data were compared between patients who received FCO2LT and non-laser controls. Multivariable regression analyses identified the predictors of treatment, time to initiation, and number of se

Oral health outcomes following early-life exposure to war-related hardship: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The Holocaust was a uniquely traumatic historical event marked by prolonged periods of starvation, extreme physical and psychological stress, and deprivation of basic human rights. While previous research has explored the general health consequences of Holocaust exposure, the long-term effects on oral health have received limited attention. Oral health is an essential component of overall well-being, with edentulism (complete tooth loss) recognized as a marker of severe oral disease and functional impairment in older adults. This purpose of this study was to assess the long-term im
