Supporting informed decisions about tubal sterilization with a patient-facing website: a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Interest in permanent contraception has increased in the US since the 2022 Dobbs decision restricted access to abortion in many states. Despite use of the federally mandated "consent for sterilization" form HHS-687, one of every five US patients who undergo tubal sterilization subsequently reports a desire to reverse their tubal sterilization, indicating that efforts to ensure informed decision-making before permanent contraceptive procedures remain needed. OBJECTIVES: To increase access to desired contraceptive services and knowledge of long-acting contraceptive options, we devel

Association of dietary iron intake and serum iron with self-reported history of pregnancy loss among women: a cross-sectional study based on NHANES 2005-2018.

OBJECTIVE: Abnormal iron metabolism has been suggested to be associated with pregnancy loss. However, dietary iron intake and serum iron levels reflect different aspects of iron metabolism, and their respective relationships with pregnancy loss remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the associations of dietary iron intake and serum iron levels with self-reported history of pregnancy loss among women aged 20-50 years using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2018. METHODS: Analyses were conducted based on the NHANES 2005-2018 dataset. Weighted

Oral Contraceptives, Concussion History, and Contact-Sport Exposure: Multimodal MRI and Brain Injury Biomarkers in Female Athletes.

Neuroimaging and blood-based biomarkers are increasingly utilized to identify long-term effects of concussion and contact-sport exposure (CSE), but female athletes are underrepresented in this work, despite potential sex-related differences. Early research indicates that widely used oral contraceptives (OCs) influence brain structure and function and concussion-related biomarkers. This study investigated whether current oral contraceptive (OC) use moderates associations of concussion history and CSE with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures and brain injury biomarkers in female athletes.

Association between cumulative lifetime exposure to reproductive hormones and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, CD4 +, and CD8 + T cells among women with breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive hormones may influence immune responses to tumors. Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), CD4 +, and CD8 + T cell densities are markers of immune activity and breast cancer prognosis. We examined associations between lifetime reproductive hormone exposure, tumor immune infiltration, and survival among women with breast cancer. METHODS: The study included invasive breast cancer cases in the Women's Circle of Health Study and the Women's Circle of Health Follow-up Study. Lifetime endogenous hormone exposure (LHEendo) was defined as reproductive years plus pregnancy dura

Prescribing Information: Elizabeth B. Connell, the Pill, and the (Woman) Patient's Peace of Mind.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, commercialized reproductive technologies experienced a reputational crisis as news about the hormonal birth control pill's possible side effects reportedly caused 18-30% of women to stop taking it. While secondary literature has followed patients' and legislatures' actions, few histories have focused on physicians' responses. How did physicians manage this public crisis of confidence? This article contributes to existing literature through a backstage look at the work of Elizabeth B. Connell (1925-2018), whose wide-ranging career in medicine, academia, governmen

Factors Associated With Contraception Use Among Active Duty Service Members at a Large Military Base.

INTRODUCTION: Active duty service members (ADSMs) experience higher rates of unintended pregnancy compared to the general population. While the military has introduced programs aimed at improving access to sexual and reproductive healthcare services (SRH), significant barriers to care remain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A survey was completed by ADSMs with access to no-cost, walk-in SRH. Descriptive statistics, univariable analyses, and multivariable logistic regression analyses examined the association of ADSM characteristics with SRH outcomes. RESULTS: Of 1,077 participants (72% male, 61% <25 y

Discontinuation, switching and contraceptive failure patterns of long-acting reversible contraceptive users in Kenya: a quantitative study.

The number of IUD and implant (long-acting reversible contraceptive) users in sub-Saharan Africa is increasing. Yet, little is known about LARC users' experiences and their discontinuation, switching, and failure rates. Contraceptive behaviours can support our understanding of users' experiences and whether these methods meet their needs; this understanding can inform user-centred contraceptive programming and decision-making. This study applies event history analysis and life tables to the Kenyan Demographic and Health Survey contraceptive calendar data to examine LARC users' behaviours and p

Condomless Sex Among Men Who Have Sex with Men: App-Facilitated Versus Non-App-Facilitated Relationships.

It is unclear whether online partner-seeking via (geo)social networking and dating websites or applications ("apps") is associated with engagement in condomless anal sex (CAS) among MSM (men who have sex with men). Previous studies present mixed findings revealing either positive, or negative, or no associations between online partner-seeking and CAS among MSM, indicating a need for additional research. This cross-sectional survey of young adult MSM residing in 15 Central Kentucky counties, USA (n = 217) provided demographic, behavioral, and relationship data about male or transgender partners

Menstrual and reproductive factors and risk of Alzheimer's disease in elderly women: a cohort study in Eastern China.

Epidemiological studies suggest that proxies of lifetime estrogen exposure are associated with the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, results remain limited and inconsistent. This study aimed to examine whether menstrual and reproductive factors, proxies of estrogen exposure, are associated with the risk of AD in Chinese postmenopausal women. Information on menstrual and reproductive factors was obtained through the baseline survey of the Zhejiang Ageing and Health Cohort Study. During the three follow-up waves, AD diagnoses were conducted. We excluded participants with prevalent cogni

Experiences of discrimination in reproductive healthcare: a psychometric evaluation of a discrimination measure for family planning settings.

BACKGROUND: Experiences of discrimination in healthcare settings contribute to inequities in healthcare access and outcomes. Black, Latina, and Indigenous communities have lower levels of trust in reproductive healthcare due to a longstanding history of abuses. In this context, discriminatory behaviors by providers may be particularly problematic. This study aimed to test the psychometric properties of a nine-item measure of lifetime experiences of discrimination in family planning settings developed by Thorburn Bird and Bogart (2003). METHODS: Data came from the nationally representative Pers

Romantic Relationship Satisfaction and Sexual Communication Self-Efficacy Among Partnered Adolescent Sexual Minority Males.

Theoretical frameworks suggest that romantic relationship satisfaction may influence sexual communication self-efficacy, which involves the confidence to discuss personal sexual health goals and plays a key role in HIV prevention among partnered adolescent males who have sex with males (MSM). The current study examined romantic relationship satisfaction as a correlate of sexual communication self-efficacy in a sample of partnered adolescent MSM. Participants (n = 50) completed self-report measures including romantic relationship satisfaction and sexual communication self-efficacy. Domains of s

Early contraceptive discontinuation and associated factors among married women initiating long-acting and short-acting contraceptives in humanitarian settings in Ethiopia: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The sexual and reproductive health (SRH) service provision in conflict-affected populations has been continually overlooked. International and local relief organizations have begun to recognize the neglect of women's SRH needs; however, SRH services and humanitarian responses remain suboptimal. Contraceptive discontinuation is a significant public health issue with considerable impact on family planning (FP) programs, as well as on women's SRH and population growth. There is scarce information regarding the dynamics of contraceptive use in refugee areas. Evidence on contraceptive u

Factors Associated With Pain Related to Insertion of a Contraceptive Intrauterine Device: Findings of a National Survey.

BACKGROUND: A prominent barrier to broader intrauterine device (IUD) uptake is the fear of pain and discomfort associated with insertion of the device. AIM: To examine the pain level perceived during IUD insertion and identify factors associated with perceived pain during the insertion procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of nationally representative survey data from Australian women using IUDs. We explored self-reported pain perception during IUD insertion retrospectively. We asked women about pregnancy history, mental health and their perceived knowledge abou

Socioeconomic and demographic differentials in unintended pregnancies, abortion, and contraceptive use in Spain: insights from the 2018 Fertility Survey.

BACKGROUND: There is growing interest in the social stratification of demographic trends, including those related to reproductive outcomes. One issue that has received little attention in recent years in the case of Spain is the relationship between individuals’ social position and unintended pregnancies, abortion, and contraceptive use. METHOD: We present descriptive statistics and estimate predicted probabilities from logistic regression models using a nationally representative sample of 14,556 women from the 2018 Spanish Fertility Survey. RESULTS: Results show that unintended pregnancies ar

High-risk fertility behavior among reproductive age women in extremely high and very high maternal mortality sub-Saharan African countries.

ABSTRACT: High-risk fertility behavior is a leading contributor to adverse maternal and child health outcomes. This study assessed the prevalence and determinants of high-risk fertility behavior among reproductive-age women in sub-Saharan Africa. We conducted a secondary analysis of Demographic and Health Survey data from eight sub-Saharan African countries with extremely high or very high maternal mortality. A weighted sample of 78,353 reproductive-age women who had given birth in the five years preceding the survey was included. A multilevel mixed-effects binary logistic regression model was

'I Did Not Choose This': teenage girls and the reproductive pipeline in rural Zimbabwe.

This article rethinks teenage pregnancy in rural Zimbabwe through a decolonial Afro-feminist lens, foregrounding the lived narratives of 26 teenage mothers in Shamva. Rather than pathologising their experiences or framing early pregnancy as a failure of knowledge or morality, we conceptualise the notion of a reproductive pipeline-a system through which poverty, gendered power, inadequate healthcare, and emphasised femininity converge to constrain girls' reproductive autonomy. The analysis reveals how early pregnancy is produced through a reproductive pipeline where poverty, patriarchy, kinship
