Reduced Cerebral Blood Flow in the Early Chronic Phase of Recurrent Concussion Among Female Collegiate-Aged Athletes.

The susceptibility of athletes to long-term adverse outcomes following recurrent concussion remains controversial. Acute concussion precipitates a transient reduction in cerebral blood flow (CBF) that typically returns to pre-injury levels. Recent work suggests that long-term CBF alterations may be sex-specific. We assessed whether concussion history was associated with chronic CBF alterations and whether sex moderated this relationship in otherwise healthy, active collegiate-aged athletes. Collegiate-aged athletes from the community (N = 204, 37.8% female, Mage = 21.0 ± 1.7) underwent magneti

Adverse events following self-administered abortion pills: A retrospective observational study.

Background and objectives In India, limited awareness regarding the potential adverse effects of medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) pills, coupled with their non-prescribed over-the-counter availability, has led to their widespread unsupervised use. Such practices may result in serious maternal complications. This study aimed to describe the clinical profile and outcomes among women presenting to a tertiary care hospital following unsupervised self-administration of MTP pills. Methods A record-based retrospective study was carried out at a tertiary academic medical centre. Case files of wo

Clinical efficacy of a specific synbiotic formulation in restoring fertility in couples with persistent post-antibiotic dysbiosis: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of a specific synbiotic formulation in improving genital environment, sperm quality, and reproductive outcomes in infertile couples with a history of persistent post-antibiotic dysbiosis. METHODS: This prospective, single-arm pilot study enrolled 33 infertile couples who had completed antibiotic therapy at least three months prior without success in conceiving. Couples received the synbiotic treatment for 90 days. A strategic sexual behavior protocol (barrier contraception for the first 45 days) was adopted. Primary endpoints were changes in Sperm DNA Frag

Common Gynecologic Issues in Patients Post-Kidney Transplantation.

Advances in kidney transplantation have transformed survival and quality of life for women with end-stage renal disease, necessitating a focus on long-term health care for this population. Female kidney transplant recipients (KTR) experience a unique spectrum of gynecologic issues shaped by persistent hormonal dysregulation, lifelong immunosuppression, and complex surgical history. These factors contribute to increased rates of abnormal uterine bleeding, endometrial hyperplasia, and early menopause. Furthermore, common conditions such as fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic pain, and pelvic organ p

Efficacy of telitacicept in a refractory systemic lupus erythematosus patient with lupus nephritis and subsequent pregnancy: a case-based review.

This case report describes a 31-year-old woman with refractory systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and lupus nephritis (LN) who achieved clinical remission following a treatment regimen that included telitacicept, in combination with cyclosporine, hydroxychloroquine, and low-dose prednisone. Despite counseling on teratogenic risk and advice for contraception, an unplanned pregnancy occurred. Telitacicept was promptly discontinued upon pregnancy confirmation, and disease control was maintained with cyclosporine A and low-dose prednisone. Due to maternal hypothyroidism, a cesarean section was per

Perspectives on Contraceptive Research for Individuals with Increased Thrombosis Risk: A Qualitative Exploration of Patients and Clinicians.

OBJECTIVES: Although most progestin-only contraceptives are generally considered safe for most patients at increased risk of arterial and venous thrombosis, patients and clinicians may be wary of their use based on limited studies. Large prospective contraceptive studies with primary data collection would improve the evidence base for people at increased thrombosis risk. We therefore aimed to find solutions for recruitment and long-term retention of representative participants in large prospective studies of contraceptives for patients at increased risk of thrombosis, identify patient- and cli

Incident endometriosis diagnosis and AMH: how surgical staging and typology relate to serum AMH levels.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a chronic, gynecologic condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus implants throughout the body. Women with endometriosis have a higher prevalence of infertility and a greater risk of early natural menopause compared to those without endometriosis. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate preoperative serum AMH levels among women with and without incident endometriosis and to assess whether levels differ by surgical staging and typology. STUDY DESIGN: The ENDO (Endometriosis: Natural History, Diagnosis, and Outcomes) study was conducted between 2

Abdominal wall endometriosis in a caesarean section scar.

A woman in her 30s with a history of three caesarean sections was referred to gynaecology oncology for evaluation of abnormal uterine bleeding and a painful anterior abdominal wall mass located at the site of her previous caesarean scar. The mass was associated with cyclical pain coinciding with menses. Her abnormal bleeding failed conservative management with an intrauterine device and oral contraceptive pills. Physical examination revealed a Pfannenstiel scar with a 4×6 cm midline mass with overlying discolouration. The patient subsequently underwent surgical excision of the caesarean scar e

Reproductive outcomes of different management strategies after hysteroscopic resection of the uterine septum with endometrial polyps: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The presence of a septate uterus combined with endometrial polyps significantly impacts women's fertility. There is currently no study on whether medication is needed after surgery and which postoperative regimen is more beneficial for uterine recovery and pregnancy outcomes. This study aims to compare the reproductive outcomes and complications of artificial cycle therapy with those of short-acting contraceptives or no hormonal treatment after hysteroscopic resection of the uterine septum with coexisting endometrial polyps. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 189 wome

Female reproductive factors, genetic susceptibility and incident osteoporosis risk.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoporosis risk is shaped by both reproductive factors and genetic predisposition, yet their combined effects remain insufficiently studied. METHOD: A total of 49,885 women from the UK Biobank were analyzed, excluding those with baseline osteoporosis or missing reproductive data. Reproductive factors included age at menarche, menopause time/status, history of stillbirth, hysterectomy, oophorectomy and oral contraceptive (OC) use. Genetic susceptibility was assessed using the polygenic risk score (PRS). Cox models estimated associations, with restricted cubic splines testing non-l

Identification of a DICER1 mutation in a preeclamptic patient with ruptured ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor and renal allograft failure under hemodialysis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Patients with renal allograft failure undergoing hemodialysis may be associated with an increased risk of preeclampsia. Preeclampsia can present with systemic manifestations, including organ bleeding. In this case, a suspected placental abruption was eventually confirmed to be caused by the rupture of an ovarian Sertoli–Leydig cell tumor (SLCT). A DICER1 mutation was subsequently identified in the patient. CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old primigravid woman with a history of thyroidectomy and renal allograft failure on maintenance hemodialysis presented at 29 weeks of gestation with

The history of the discovery of estetrol.

The three major estrogens, estrone (E1), estradiol (E2) and estriol (E3) were identified and characterized in the 1930s; it then took more than 30 years before a new major estrogen, estetrol (15α-hydroxyestriol, E4) was identified. Here we try to highlight the pioneering work of a small group of scientists who made the new discovery possible. The formal identification of E4 was made by a group led by Egon Diczfalusy at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm in 1967, but was preceded by a series of progressive steps beginning in 1955. Besides isolating the new steroid from maternal and neonatal ur

The impact of prior hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) use on endometrial lining thickness in the fertility clinic setting: a retrospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: Despite wide-spread use of intrauterine devices (IUDs), research on an IUD's long-term impact on endometrial growth and function is limited. Endometrial atrophy is a known mechanistic action of hormonal IUDs, and characterizing its reversibility is critical. Our study compared endometrial lining thickness (EMT) in patients undergoing fertility treatment with and without prior hormonal IUD use. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of 163 patients aged 18-45, each with at least 1 treatment cycle with ultrasound monitoring at a single academic institution between 2018 and 2023
