Comparison of short TE CT-like MRI sequences and UHR-CT in cadaveric wrist study.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the performance of CT-like MRI sequences (gradient echo with radial k-space filling (GRE), pointwise encoding time reduction with radial acquisition (PETRA), radial Ultrashort Echo Time (UTE)) versus ultra-high-resolution CT (UHR-CT) in assessing carpal bones and soft tissue calcifications in cadaveric wrists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five anonymized cadaveric forearm specimens were imaged using a 3 T MRI system with GRE, PETRA, and radial UTE sequences, alongside UHR-CT. Evaluated parameters included bone contours, carpal bone dimensions, cortical thicknes

Ulnar morphology of Pliobates cataloniae (Pliopithecoidea: Crouzeliidae): Insights into catarrhine locomotor diversity and forelimb evolution.

Pliobates cataloniae is a small-bodied crouzeliid pliopithecoid from the Miocene (∼11.6 Ma) of Abocador de Can Mata (ACM; Vallès-Penedès Basin, NE Iberian Peninsula). It exhibits a mosaic of primitive (stem catarrhine) and derived (modern hominoid-like) postcranial features. The holotype partial skeleton, from locality ACM/C8-A4, includes an almost complete ulna-a bone that plays a critical role in forearm flexion-extension and pronation-supination. Here, we use landmark-based three-dimensional geometric morphometrics to evaluate the closest morphometric affinities of the Pliobates ulna and ex

Letter to the editor on "Comprehensive Comparison Between Conservative Therapy and Surgical Management for Completely Displaced and Comminuted Mid-Shaft Clavicle Fractures".

We discuss the study by Xiao Han et al., titled " Comprehensive Comparison Between Conservative Therapy and Surgical Management for Completely Displaced and Comminuted Mid-Shaft Clavicle Fractures " The authors compared outcomes between conservative and surgical treatments in 105 patients, finding higher union rates, faster healing, and no malunion in the surgical group, albeit with a notable incidence of postoperative numbness. While long-term functional outcomes were comparable, surgery offered quicker recovery of strength and return to work. However, as a retrospective study, potential sele

Assessment of Cartilaginous and Tendinous Lesions Following Intramedullary Compression Screw Fixation of Middle Phalangeal Fractures: A Cadaveric Study.

PURPOSE: Phalangeal fractures are undergoing surgical intervention more frequently and can be stabilized via a range of modalities. Intramedullary screw (IMS) fixation has become popular in the management of metacarpal and phalangeal fractures, with promising short- to medium-term results. Violation of articular cartilage and the terminal extensor tendon is a concern when IMS fixation is used in the middle phalanx. The aim of this study was to assess the cartilaginous and soft tissue footprint resulting from retrograde IMS insertion in the middle phalanx. METHODS: Ten cadaveric hands underwen

Minimally Invasive Screw Fixation in Bennett Fractures: A New Reposition Technique in a Case Series.

Transfixation or open reduction are conventional methods for treating Bennett fractures, with no current gold standard. Transfixation only allows for insufficient reduction, while the open approach by Wagner is relatively invasive. We present a minimally invasive surgical approach that allows anatomical reduction and short operation time. We report previous experiences in a case series of five patients. The disabilities of arm, shoulder, and hand score, visual analog scale, range of motion of the thumb, grip, and pinch strength were used for assessing the outcomes. Closed reduction employs an

Humeral component retroversion in the Comprehensive Reverse Shoulder System arthroplasty: rotations, clinical outcomes, and quality-of-life analysis in a prospective randomized study.

BACKGROUND: The literature highlights various factors influencing rotations in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA), including humeral retroversion. Although several studies have noted that increased humeral retroversion leads to reduced internal rotation (IR) and increased external rotation (ER), there have been no randomized trials investigating the relationship between rotations and humeral retroversion. This study aims to determine the optimal degree of retroversion (0°-30°) to achieve the best rotational mobility of the shoulder and to analyze the mobility, clinical functional score

TOUCH® duo-mobile prosthesis in TMC osteoarthritis: two-year results and practical insights regarding key surgical steps and complication management.

INTRODUCTION: The Touch® dual-mobility prosthesis is a well-established treatment for advanced trapeziometacarpal (TMC) joint osteoarthritis, offering an alternative to resection arthroplasty. Short-term studies suggest dual-mobility designs reduce dislocation and loosening compared to single-mobility prostheses. This retrospective study presents clinical outcomes after a mean follow-up of 24 months, focusing on revision surgery and providing insights about key surgical steps and the management of adverse events. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 78 patients (88 prostheses) with TMC osteoarth

Elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) for displaced midshaft clavicle fractures in adolescents (12-18 Years): a study of early functional outcomes and safety.

BACKGROUND: Displaced midshaft clavicle fractures in adolescents aged 12 to 18 present challenges for conservative management because of muscle-induced redisplacement and decreased skeletal plasticity. Elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) provides a minimally invasive alternative; however, the evidence supporting its use in this age group remains limited. METHODS: Twenty-three adolescents (14 boys and 9 girls, with a mean age of 14.8 years) underwent closed reduction and percutaneous elastic stable intramedullary nailing (CR-PEIN) for the treatment of displaced midshaft clavicle fract

Osteonecrosis in pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus).

Bone lesions, particularly osteonecrosis, have been rarely described in cetaceans, with limited studies correlating imaging, gross and microscopic findings. Aseptic osteonecrosis is especially relevant as a chronic form of decompression sickness, well-documented in human divers but controversially reported in cetaceans. This study examined the humeral heads of five stranded short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) using computed tomography (CT) and plastic embedding histologic techniques. Three specimens exhibited CT-detectable lesions, while two did not. CT imaging revealed dist

Limb salvage and complication management after (sub-) total humerus resection for primary malignant bone tumors in early childhood.

Limb-salvage after (sub-) total humerus resection in skeletally immature patients, aged less than 10 years, remains the domain of individual case decisions due to a small number of affected patients. Seven children aged ≤ 10 years at the time of (sub-) total bone sarcoma resection of the humerus between 2018 and 2023 were included in this retrospective study. Limb salvage with an intact motor function of the lower arm was achieved in 100% of cases at a mean follow-up of 89.8 months. Reconstruction survival was 28.6%. 61.8% (n = 8/13) of complications necessitated revision operations (n = 7). D

Technique of Nonvascularized Second Metacarpal Transfer in the Treatment of Symbrachydactyly.

Various surgical techniques have been utilized for thumb reconstruction in the setting of aphalangia. Given abnormal proximal anatomy, nonvascularized toe phalangeal transfer has been a popular surgical technique in a subset of patients with monodactylous symbrachydactyly. However, altering the appearance of a noninvolved foot is often unappealing to many parents. Here we detail a surgical technique of thumb reconstruction utilizing the index metacarpal as a nonvascularized graft to improve thumb length and stability. This technique avoids the donor site morbidity associated with toe phalangea

Epidemiology and Treatment of Olecranon Fractures: a nationwide register-based analysis of 27,880 cases in Denmark from 1999 to 2018.

BACKGROUND: Olecranon fractures (OFs) account for approximately 20% of proximal forearm fractures. Displaced or unstable OFs are typically treated surgically with tension-band wiring (TBW) or plate fixation (PF). While comparative works on surgical OF management exist, epidemiological studies are limited by short time spans and small sample sizes. This study investigates OF incidence rates (IRs), and treatment trends in Denmark over a 20-year period from 1999 to 2018. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Population-based Danish National Patient Register study on OFs in adult patients from 1999 to 2018. Pati

Proximal Pole Scaphoid Fracture Nonunion Treated With Ipsilateral Hamate Transfer: A Case Series.

PURPOSE: The scaphoid's retrograde blood flow renders it vulnerable to fracture nonunion proximally. As proximal fragmentation occurs, reconstructive options become challenging with little consensus regarding treatment. Proposed surgical techniques include vascularized or nonvascularized grafts and fragment excision with scapholunate (SL) ligament advancement. We hypothesized that ipsilateral proximal hamate with volar capitohamate ligament autograft would provide a viable treatment for proximal pole scaphoid nonunion in a sample drawn from a military population. METHODS: Eleven patients with

Automated quantitative analysis of peri-articular bone microarchitecture in HR-pQCT knee images.

UNLABELLED: Applying HR-pQCT to image the knee necessitates the development and validation of novel image analysis workflows. Here, we present and validate the first automated workflow for in vivo quantitative assessment of peri-articular bone density and microarchitecture in the knee. Segmentation models were first trained with radius and tibia images (N=2,598) then fine-tuned with knee images (N=131). Atlas-based registration was used to create medial and lateral contact surface masks, which were combined with bone segmentations to generate peri-articular regions of interest masks. The accur

A proximodistal gradient in bone structure and mechanics in the wings of Seba's short-tailed bat, Carollia perspicillata.

Bats possess the remarkable ability to fly, and with this, distinctive wing bone properties. We investigated the structural, mechanical, and compositional properties of the humerus, radius, metacarpals, and proximal and middle phalanges of Carollia perspicillata, an approximately 15 g fruit-eating bat native to the Neotropics. We used microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) to assess cross-sectional properties (cross-sectional area, second moment of area, circularity index), quantitative backscattered scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to assess mineral density in longitudinal sections, and nanoin
