The cellular immune status of 48 canine chimeras was studied between 15 days and 3 years after a lethal dose of cyclophosphamide (CY) and an allogeneic marrow graft. Marrow graft recipients were given no further immuno-suppressive treatment. Recovery of total white blood cell counts was complete by day 20 after grafting. Peripheral blood lymphocyte counts did not reach the normal range until day 100. Thirty-one cases with malignant neoplasm and nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE) were studied. A threefold increase in the incidence of NBTE over the five-year period ending in 1976 was noticed. Seventy-one percent of patients with NBTE had concomitant disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Adenocarcinomas of the lung or ovary were the most common tumors (48%), followed by hematologic malignancies (25%). In 28 haemodialysis patients, in whom there was a high incidence of depleted marrow iron stores, a significant rise in Hb, and Hct, occasionally to a normal level, was achieved as effectively with oral as with i.v. iron supplements. There was a variable response to iron in individuals which could not be predicted from the initial iron status. No patient in whom marrow iron stores were reassessed after iron therapy developed increased marrow iron stores. Routine iron supplements are recommended in haemodialysis patients with regular monitoring of body iron stores.

Five patients with haemodialysis bone disease were treated with 1 to 1.5 mug of 1,25 (OH)2D3 daily for periods ranging from 6 -8 months. Twenty patients with very severe bone marrow aplasia were treated with mismatched bone marrow transplants. Engraftment and transitory chimerism (from 2-10 months) not complicated by secondary disease occurred in 4 patients. Of these, 3 are still alive after 5 years, with a compensated hematologic status. Engraftment failed in 16 patients; only 1 of these is still alive after 5 years.
