Implant-associated Vertical Root Fracture in Adjacent Endodontically Treated Teeth: A Case Series and Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to report a possible effect of the presence of an adjacent implant on the development of a vertical root fracture (VRF) in endodontically treated teeth. METHODS: A series of 8 cases in 7 patients with teeth diagnosed with VRF after the placement of implants in the adjacent area is described and analyzed. In addition, a comprehensive literature search with strict inclusion and exclusion criteria was undertaken to identify additional clinical studies that assessed this clinical scenario. RESULTS: The case series analysis revealed that the time from implant placem

Immediate Implant Placement in Sockets with Asymptomatic Apical Periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate if the presence of granulation tissue in asymptomatic apical periodontitis compromised immediate implant placement. METHODS: Patients requiring extraction of one tooth (maxillary and mandibular incisive, canine or premolar) with asymptomatic apical periodontitis, were recruited for this prospective study. They were randomly scheduled into two groups: in first group (A) including 30 teeth, reactive soft tissue was debrided before implant placement, and in second group (B) including 30 teeth, reactive soft tissue was left in the apica

A Dental Prosthesis from the Early Modern Age in Tuscany (Italy).

BACKGROUND: During archaeological excavation, carried out in the S. Francesco Monastery at Lucca (Tuscany, Italy), a golden dental appliance was discovered. The prosthesis was found, together with commingled human remains, in the collective tomb of the aristocratic family of the Guinigi, a powerful family who governed Lucca from 1392 until 1429. The exact archaeological dating of the prosthesis was not possible, but some elements suggest a dating to the beginning of the 17th century. PURPOSE: Aim of the paper is to study and describe the dental appliance trough a multidisciplinary approach.

Unconventional implant placement. V: Implant placement through impacted teeth; results from 10 cases with an 8- to 1-year follow-up.

The aim of this paper is to document additional cases to an unconventional protocol published in 2009. In 9 patients, sites rendered edentulous by the presence of an impacted maxillary canine were treated with 12 implants placed through the impacted canines. In another patient, 3 implants were inserted in the mandible to rehabilitate a failing bridge. Implants were placed encroaching upon either the root or the crown. No postoperative pain was reported. Healing was uneventful in all but one patient; the latter underwent soft tissue infection 2 weeks after implant placement and was successfully

A clinical study on the influence of suturing material on oral wound healing.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Suture materials play an important role in healing, enabling reconstruction and reassembly of tissue separated by the surgical procedure or trauma, and at the same time facilitating and promoting healing and hemostasis. Suture materials are used daily in oral surgery, and are considered to be substances most commonly implanted in human body. The aim of this clinical study was to examine the speed of wound healing and complications incidence, after the use of three different absorbable synthetic suture materials in oral surgery (catgut, Dexon and Vicryl rapide), and to ascertain

Pre-extractive interradicular implant bed preparation: case presentations of a novel approach to immediate implant placement at multirooted molar sites.

Immediate implant placement at multirooted molar sites involves a series of site-specific anatomical challenges, including implant bed preparation in the presence of interradicular bone septa. The aim of this article is to present and discuss a novel approach that gives improved guidance during implant bed preparation for immediate implants at multirooted extraction sites in both the mandible and maxilla. Following decoronation of the concerned teeth, osteotomies were performed directly through the teeth's initially retained root complexes. After completion of the drilling protocol, the remain

The effect of type of restoration on the stress field developed in terminal abutments with severely reduced periodontal support and coronal structure.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Periodontally compromised teeth (PCT) that serve as terminal abutments (TAs) are often challenging depending on the post-and-core treatment, the type of partial fixed dental prosthesis (PFDP), and the periodontal support. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the biomechanical impact of 3 types of PFDP supported by cast post-and-cores on PCT serving as terminal abutments. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 3-dimensional (3D) model of a human mandible was fabricated by using computed tomography (CT) images and parameterized in a computer-aided design (CAD) environme

Bone dimensions in the posterior mandible: a retrospective radiographic study using cone beam computed tomography. Part 1--analysis of dentate sites.

This retrospective radiographic study analyzed the dimensions of the alveolar bone in the posterior dentate mandible based on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. A total of 56 CBCT images met the inclusion criteria, resulting in a sample size of 122 cross sections showing posterior mandibular teeth (premolars and molars). The thickness of the buccal and lingual bone walls was measured at two locations: 4 mm apical to the cementoenamel junction (measurement point 1, MP1) and at the middle of the root (measurement point 2, MP2). Further, alveolar bone width was assessed at the level of

Long-term prognosis of endodontically treated teeth: a retrospective analysis of preoperative factors in molars.

INTRODUCTION: Long-term predictability of restored endodontically treated teeth is important for the decision of tooth retention versus extraction and implant placement. The purpose of this study was to validate the hypothesis that preoperative factors can predict the long-term prognosis of molars requiring endodontic and restorative treatment for future prognostic investigations. METHODS: A clinical database was searched for molar endodontic treatments with crown placement and a minimum of 4-year follow-up. Charts of 42 patients with 50 individual treatments were randomly selected. Informati

Endodontic treatment of a mandibular canine with two roots.

Lower canine is a tooth with a robust, long root and very good implantation, making it a valuable abutment tooth for any type of prosthetic treatment. In order to treat it conservatively and to prevent its loss from the dental arch it is necessary to accomplish a correct and complete endodontic treatment, which involves knowledge of all its morphological variation. The mandibular canine usually presents one root with a single large canal centrally located. The possible anatomical variations are the existence of a single root with two canals and of two different roots, each having a canal. The

Risk assessment before extraction for immediate implant placement in the posterior mandible: a computerized tomographic scan study.

BACKGROUND: Controversy exists in treatment planning relative to the attempt of saving a tooth with unfavorable prognosis or extracting it and placing an immediate or delayed implant. Preextraction radiographic assessments of teeth are traditionally performed using two-dimensional periapical and panoramic radiographs. These can reveal bone loss around a tooth, but have limited use in assessing implant risk before tooth extraction. Three-dimensional radiographs or cone-beam (CB) or computerized tomographic (CT) scans are often taken after tooth extraction and socket healing to assess the healed

Mandibular incisive canal: cone beam computed tomography.

PURPOSE: Panoramic radiography is often used to analyze the anatomical structure of the teeth, jaws, and temporomandibular joints. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging allows multiple axial slices of the image to be obtained through these anatomical structures. The aim of this study was to assess CBCT compared with panoramic radiography to verify the presence, location, and dimensions of the mandibular incisive canal. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CBCT scan images and panoramic radiographs of 89 subjects were compared for the presence of the mandibular incisive canal, its location, size, and

Root and pulp response after intentional injury from miniscrew placement.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects on the pulp and supporting tissues when miniscrews severely abrade the root surface. METHODS: Sixty self-drilling and self-tapping miniscrews were placed between the premolars and molars of 3 beagles (20 miniscrews per dog). The miniscrews were placed according to the protocol suggested by the manufacturer, but with the intention of inflicting root damage. Radiographs were taken of all 60 interdental alveolar sites, 5 in each quadrant, and sites that evidenced root proximity were identified. The animals were killed at 12 week

Success rate of miniscrews relative to their position to adjacent roots.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate, histologically, root contact, proximity to a root, and proximity to marginal bone level as possible risk factors for the failure of mini-screws when inserted between neighbouring teeth. Twenty mini-screws were inserted into the mandible of five beagle dogs. Each dog received two bracket screw bone anchors in each lower quadrant, between the roots of the second and third, and third and fourth premolars. Every six weeks, apical radiographs were taken and vital stains were administered. Twenty-five weeks after insertion of the screws, the dogs were sacri

Repair of experimental plaque-induced periodontal disease in dogs.

Forty mongrel dogs were used in this study for induction of periodontal disease by placing subgingival silk ligatures affecting maxillary and mandibular premolar teeth during a 12-month period. Experimental premolar teeth received monthly clinical, radiographic, and histometric/pathologic assessments. The results demonstrated significant increases in scores and values of periodontal disease parameters associated with variable degrees of alveolar bone loss. The experimental maxillary premolar teeth exhibited more severe and rapid rates of periodontal disease compared with mandibular premolar te
