Patella Resurfacing Is Associated With Improving Six-Month Outcomes in Kinematically Aligned Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Propensity Score-Matched Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Kinematic alignment (KA) seeks to restore each patient's native knee anatomy. Limited research compares functional outcomes between KA robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty (rTKA) and conventional KA-TKA (cTKA). This study examined differences in early and 6-month functional outcomes between imageless, table-mounted rTKA and cTKA. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, propensity score-matched cohort study including 291 primary KA-TKAs from January 2018 to October 2024. In cTKA, patella resurfacing was routinely performed, but not in rTKA. There were 98 KA-rTKA patients matched

From Spine to Limbs: Imaging Insights and Clinical Correlation in Caudal Regression Syndrome.

Caudal regression syndrome (CRS) refers to a spectrum of congenital structural defects of the caudal region. We present a case of caudal regression syndrome with the objective of correlating the symptoms of caudal regression syndrome with the detailed imaging findings. A 05-year-old boy who was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in August 2025 , presented with a post-urethroplasty state of hypospadias, complaining of urinary incontinence through the normal meatus and a urethrocutaneous fistula. He had dribbling of urine through hypospadias and deformed feet since birth. He also de

Does Patellar Resurfacing Impact Patient-Perceived Outcomes Following Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty? A Propensity-Matched Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Patellar resurfacing is performed in up to 87% of total knee arthroplasties (TKAs) in the United States. While reducing anterior knee pain is a theoretical benefit, there are no established best practices for resurfacing in primary TKA. Previous studies comparing resurfacing-related patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were limited by sample size and a lack of propensity matching. This study aimed to compare the impact of patellar resurfacing on complication rates and clinically meaningful PROMs in propensity-matched primary TKA patients using an institutional database. METHO

Neuroprotective effects and mechanistic insights of sinomenine in ischemic stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis of preclinical animal studies.

BACKGROUND: Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability and mortality worldwide. Despite substantial advances in reperfusion therapy, effective neuroprotective strategies remain limited. Sinomenine, a bioactive alkaloid derived from plants of the Menispermaceae family, has shown neuroprotective effects in preclinical models of ischemic stroke. However, the available preclinical evidence has not been systematically quantified, and the relationship between sinomenine dosage and therapeutic efficacy remains unclear. METHODS: Eight electronic databases were searched from inception

Modified 20% anatomical axis method demonstrates the highest reliability for posterior tibial slope measurement on radiographs.

INTRODUCTION: Several methods are described for the measurement of the posterior tibial slope (PTS), with no clear consensus on which method is the most reproducible and precise for measuring the PTS. This study aimed to identify the most reliable method for measuring PTS that is easily reproducible and precise. METHODS: Patients who underwent unilateral medial opening wedge high tibial osteotomy (MOWHTO) for varus deformity were retrospectively analyzed using their preoperative and 6-month postoperative electronic optical scan (EOS) scans for measurement of PTS. Four commonly used methods to

Bicomponent Mapping of Cortical Bone Using a New Interleaved UTE Imaging Sequence.

PURPOSE: Ultrashort echo time (UTE) MRI enables direct imaging of cortical bone and quantification of its water compartments via bicomponent T2* modeling. However, conventional approaches require multiple separate dual-echo scans due to limitations in gradient power. This approach is prone to inter-scan inconsistencies such as motion and signal drift, which degrade fitting accuracy. This study proposes an interleaved dual-echo acquisition sequence that acquires multiple echo time (TE) images in a single scan to improve bicomponent T2* quantification in cortical bone. METHODS: The proposed UTE

Mild asymptomatic lateral osteoarthritis does not compromise outcomes after medial opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy.

PURPOSE: High tibial osteotomy (HTO) is a reliable treatment for medial gonarthrosis in painful varus knees, relieving pain by redistributing load to the lateral compartment. Traditionally, lateral compartment osteoarthritis (OA) has been considered a contraindication. However, the recent ESSKA consensus suggests that mild lateral OA may not be an absolute contraindication, although supporting evidence remains limited. This retrospective study investigates the safety and efficacy of HTO in patients with mild-to-moderate asymptomatic lateral OA, hypothesising that HTO provides significant pain

Outcomes of Medial Patellofemoral Ligament Reconstruction With Concomitant Tibial Tubercle Osteotomy for Failed Surgery for Patellar Instability Versus Primary Medial Patellofemoral Ligament Reconstruction With Concomitant Tibial Tubercle Osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: Management of patellofemoral instability is complex. It is not known whether the outcomes of medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction (MPFL) with concomitant tibial tubercle osteotomy (TTO) performed in the revision setting after a failed surgery for patellar instability equal the outcomes of an MPFL-Reconstruction +TTO performed as a primary procedure. HYPOTHESIS: Both groups would have low recurrent instability rates, significantly improved subjective outcomes, and return to sport (RTS) percentages equivalent to or higher than those currently established in the literature.

Paley Va Tibia hemimelia: challenges and mid-term outcomes.

An infant with equino-varus deformity of her right foot and flexion deformity of the knee presented to our centre. Based on clinical and radiological examination findings, she was diagnosed with Paley Va (Jones Ia) axial longitudinal intercalary deficiency of the right leg as the entire tibia was absent. Consequent to cultural non-acceptance of amputation by the parents, her management involved staged procedures. The initial surgery aimed to achieve fusion between the talus and the distal end of the fibula after soft tissue release and fibular shortening. In the subsequent surgery, Weber patel

Longitudinal associations of dietary intake, physical activity, and short-chain fatty acids with bone development in early postmenopausal women.

UNLABELLED: Bone loss accelerates in early menopause, increasing fracture risk. In 223 women followed for 2 years, higher fiber and energy intake were linked to better bone structure, while higher fat intake and some physical activity domains were inversely associated. Specific short-chain fatty acids showed positive associations, highlighting diet-microbiome interactions in bone health. BACKGROUND: The early postmenopausal period is characterized by accelerated loss of bone mineral density (BMD), underscoring the importance of modifiable lifestyle factors as potential targets for prevention.

Tibialization of Fibula for Large Segment Tibia Loss Following Chronic Osteomyelitis.

The tibia is the larger and stronger of the 2 bones in the lower leg, acting as the major weight-bearing and load-transferring bone between the knee and the ankle. Its subcutaneous location makes it particularly prone to trauma. When such injuries fail to heal, become infected, or remain exposed, large segmental bone loss can occur, creating significant reconstructive challenges to restore function. We present the case of a 10-year-old boy who sustained a trivial stick injury to his left leg that became infected, resulting in extensive tibial necrosis and exposure. Initial attempts at debridem

Impact of distal femoral morphology on short-term outcomes following high tibial osteotomy (HTO) in varus knees.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the availability of various osteotomies for varus knee osteoarthritis, including proximal tibial, distal femoral, and fibular osteotomies, HTO is the most prevalent in clinical practice. The primary focus of this study is to investigate how distal femoral morphology influences the outcomes of HTO. METHODS: Demographic characteristics, radiographic parameters, and functional scores were collected preoperatively and at 2-year follow-up from patients undergoing HTO at our institution between January 2022 and July 2022. Patients were categorized into two cohorts based on the

Altered gait strategies show inconsistent medial compartment unloading in varus medial knee osteoarthritis awaiting high tibial osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: Medial knee osteoarthritis is increasingly diagnosed in younger adults who are often unsuitable for joint replacement. High tibial osteotomy corrects varus malalignment but is invasive. Gait retraining is a low-cost, non-surgical option to reduce medial tibiofemoral loading, but its effects in varus deformity are unclear. We quantified the immediate biomechanical effects of short-term gait modifications on internal tibiofemoral loading. METHODS: Twenty-nine patients (30 knees) with medial knee osteoarthritis scheduled for high tibial osteotomy performed three modified gaits: toe o

Virtual Reality Improves Confidence and Short-Term Retention During Tibial Intramedullary Nail Insertion: A Randomized Trial.

Surgeon self-confidence is a valued trait that may be built over time and can improve surgeon-patient relationships. The authors seek to study how the use of Virtual Reality (VR) impacts the confidence of a naive trainee. Twenty-five first- and second-year medical students were recruited to compare methods of preparation for intramedullary tibial nail insertion. Participants were randomized into groups that used a technique guide, VR simulation, or both. Each completed assessment of confidence and retention before and after preparation. Procedural confidence was significantly higher in the VR

Induction of limb regeneration in lizards in relation to the expression of the signaling proteins FGF8 and Shh.

After hind limb amputation in lizards, scars or short outgrowths are formed. FGFs may stimulate regeneration. Injections of FGF-1/-2 into the limb stump were made until 26 days post-amputation. This treatment gives rise to outgrowths of 1.5-3.5 mm within 40-70 days post-amputation, containing axial cartilages continuous with stump bones but missing muscles. Immunohistochemical localization in the outgrowth shows 5BrdU-labeled proliferating cells in the apical wound epidermis and perichondrium at 40-50 days post-amputation. Low to no proliferation is present in the axial cartilages and connecti
