Ball and socket ankle joints in 4 patients with "tarsal coalition" have first been described by Lamb and later by others. This report deals with a further case. The boy with a congenitally short left leg and absence of the lateral two toes was seen at the age of 4 months. He was again seen at 11 years of age after a sprain of the right ankle. Roentgen-examination showed calcaneotarsal synostosis and a ball and socket ankle joint with a fatigue fracture of the lateral metatarsal. Twenty-three cases of claw foot with limited talocrural and subtalar mobility were the result of muscle contracture of the leg after tibial-shaft fracture. A roentgenographic study including arteriography was performed. It was concluded that the typical short cavus foot is due to fibrous contracture of the muscles in the deep posterior compartment caused by vascular damage, swelling in the deep posterior compartment, or severe muscle laceration. On physical examination the distance between the lateral malleolus and the Achilles tendon was shortened in comparison with the sound side in all case

When cartilage is deformed, it becomes electrically polarized. At least two mechanisms seem to underlie this phenomenon, namely, a short-duration, high-amplitude, piezoelectric-like response and a longer-duration, lower-amplitude response secondary to streaming potentials. The polarity of articular cartilage during loading could hypothetically facilitate joint lubrication.

Amniocentesis performed on Day 15½ of gestation caused dysmelia in 85 of 143 offspring of Sprague-Dawley and Wistar strain rats. Almost all defects were of reduction type, only 3 hind limb postaxial supernumerary digits being seen. Defect intensity graded from longitudinal splitting of the phalanges, through phalangeal suppression, to very severe growth retardation of the long limb bones and the limb girdle. Bone from 7 terminally ill men who received 45Ca ½ to 23 days before death was studied by quantitative autoradiography. Short-term exchangeable calcium was located on bone surfaces, and had an apparent mass of 3.4 Gm. The time of maximal surface 45Ca activity was 2.5 days.
