An emplaced plastic plate was demonstrated by computed tomographic scanning five years after surgical implantation because of fracture of the orbital floor, proving that it had remained in proper position and that the patient's complaints were unrelated to its presence in the orbit. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first instance in which this method had been used intentionally to achieve noninvasive localization of an orbital plastic plate. It is a valuable and accurate adjunct in ascertaining possible migration or early extension of the emplaced implant.

A prospective and consecutive series of 225 patients with severe head injuries who were managed in a uniform way was analyzed to relate outcome to several clinical variables. Good recovery or moderate disability were achieved by 56% of the patients, 10% remained severely disabled or vegetative, and 34% died. We treated 16 patients aged 1 1/2 to 11 years with myopic anisometropic amblyopia with contact-lens correction of refractive error and occlusion. The degree of visual improvement compared favourably with that reported with the use of spectacles. There were no complications from contact lenses, and only one patient required anesthesia for fitting. Ninety-four consecutive persons with unilateral enucleations or eviscerations were tested by the Schirmer I and Schirmer II tests for tear production. The correlation between lacrimal lens power changes and changing posterior apical radii was examined for a sample of 20 eyes wearing Bausch and Lomb Soflens contact lenses. Power changes caused by in situ lens flexure were calculated for principal meridians and both calculated in situ contact lens powers and over-refraction corrections were subtracted from the patient's spectacle corrections to determine lacrimal lens powers in each meridian. A spectrofluorometric method of protein analysis using fluorescamine was shown to be a meaningful method of evaluating denture cleanser efficacy. This assay was useful in the presence of most currently used denture cleanser ingredients, materials which cause other protein assay methods to fail. Fifty-two unilaterally enucleated patients were studied for symptoms, signs, and actual presence of bacteria in the socket and fellow eye. The majority (85%) of asymptomatic sockets were found to have a mixed culture of pathogenic organisms. Sockets had a significantly (P = .001) greater frequency of pathogenic organisms than the fellow eye. Cross contamination does not appear frequently but is a definite possibility. We recommend culture and treatment of the asymptomatic socket before surgery on the remaining eye.

Two cases of hereditary dysplasia in the same generation of a family are presented. The genetic line is suggestive of a dominant transmission.
