The main aims of this thesis were 1) to study the pattern of axially directed occlusal forces developed during chewing and biting in dentitions restored with cross-arch bridges, 2) to find out to what extent these forces are influenced by the amount of periodontal tissue supporting the bridge abutments and 3) to study the chewing ability in subjects supplied with cross-arch bridges. A population of 100 patients with periodontal disease who had been treated and maintained for 15 years or longer was studied for tooth loss. The patients averaged 43.8 years of age and consisted of 59 females and 41 males. Patients were examined and their dental records were reviewed. On the basis of response to therapy and tooth loss, the patients were classified as Well-Maintained (77), Downhill (15), or Extreme Downhill (8). A spectrofluorometric method of protein analysis using fluorescamine was shown to be a meaningful method of evaluating denture cleanser efficacy. This assay was useful in the presence of most currently used denture cleanser ingredients, materials which cause other protein assay methods to fail. The determination of dental plaque protein was shown to be an adequate measure of dental plaque dry weight.

Two cases of hereditary dysplasia in the same generation of a family are presented. The genetic line is suggestive of a dominant transmission. The therapeutic attitude in each case: --Orthodontic, endodontic and prosthetic rehabilitation in the 1st case. Tests were conducted using a mobilometer to determine the effects of the opposing dentition on mobility of selected teeth in the partially edentulous mandible. In addition, the effect of the opposing dentition and the presence or absence of a lower removable partial denture on chewing efficiency was evaluated.
