Persistent Relief: Protocol for a Feasibility Randomized Trial Comparing Yoga to Pain Education for Patients With Persistent Post-Surgical Pain.

BACKGROUND: Persistent post-surgical pain, a chronic pain syndrome with few effective treatments, has spiked in recent years due to the increase in life expectancy and the number of surgical procedures performed. Studies have shown that non-pharmacological interventions, such as yoga, may help manage chronic pain, reducing pain severity and interference. Despite emerging evidence of the efficacy of yoga in managing chronic pain symptoms, rigorous studies evaluating its use in patients with persistent post-surgical pain have not been conducted. This study describes protocols used in Persistent

Use of generative large language models for patient education on common surgical conditions: a comparative analysis between ChatGPT and Google Gemini.

There is a growing importance for patients to easily access information regarding their medical conditions to improve their understanding and participation in health care decisions. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has proven as a fast, efficient, and effective tool in educating patients regarding their health care conditions. The aim of the study is to compare the responses provided by AI tools, ChatGPT and Google Gemini, to assess for conciseness and understandability of information provided for the medical conditions Deep vein thrombosis, decubitus ulcers, and hemorrhoids. A cross-sectional ori

Postoperative Restrictive Opioid Protocols and Durable Changes in Opioid Prescribing and Chronic Opioid Use.

IMPORTANCE: Changes in postsurgical opioid prescribing practices may help reduce chronic opioid use in surgical patients. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether postsurgical acute pain across different surgical subspecialties can be managed effectively after hospital discharge with an opioid supply of 3 or fewer days and whether this reduction in prescribed opioids is associated with reduced new, persistent opioid use. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this prospective cohort study with a case-control design, a restrictive opioid prescription protocol (ROPP) specifying an opioid supply of 3 o

The role of the default mode network in longitudinal functional brain reorganization of brain gliomas.

The study of patients after glioma resection offers a unique opportunity to investigate brain reorganization. It is currently unknown how the whole-brain connectomic profile evolves longitudinally after surgical resection of a glioma and how this may be associated with tumor characteristics and cognitive outcome. In this longitudinal study, we investigate the impact of tumor lateralization and grade on functional connectivity (FC) in highly connected networks, or hubs, and cognitive performance. Twenty-eight patients (17 high-grade, 11 low-grade gliomas) underwent longitudinal pre/post-surgery

Systematic review of venous thromboembolism risk categories derived from Caprini score.

OBJECTIVE: Hospital-acquired venous thromboembolism (VTE, including pulmonary embolism [PE] and deep vein thrombosis [DVT]) is a preventable cause of hospital death. The Caprini risk assessment model (RAM) is one of the most commonly used tools to assess VTE risk. The RAM is operationalized in clinical practice by grouping several risk scores into VTE risk categories that drive decisions on prophylaxis. A correlation between increasing Caprini scores and rising VTE risk is well-established. We assessed whether the increasing VTE risk categories assigned on the basis of recommended score ranges

Prospective Multicenter Comparison of Open and Robotic Radical Prostatectomy: The PROST-QA/RP2 Consortium.

PURPOSE: Our goal was to evaluate the comparative effectiveness of robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) and open radical prostatectomy (ORP) in a multicenter study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated men with localized prostate cancer at 11 high-volume academic medical centers in the United States from the PROST-QA (2003-2006) and the PROST-QA/RP2 cohorts (2010-2013) with a pre-specified goal of comparing RALP (549) and ORP (545). We measured longitudinal patient-reported health-related quality of life (HRQOL) at pre-treatment and at 2, 6, 12, and 24 months, and pathological and

AAAPT Diagnostic Criteria for Acute Pain Following Breast Surgery.

Acute pain after breast surgery decreases the quality of life of cancer survivors. Previous studies using a variety of definitions and methods report prevalence rates between 10% and 80%, which suggests the need for a comprehensive framework that can be used to guide assessment of acute pain and pain-related outcomes after breast surgery. A multidisciplinary task force with clinical and research expertise performed a focused review and synthesis and applied the 5 dimensional framework of the AAAPT (Analgesic, Anesthetic, and Addiction Clinical Trial Translations, Innovations, Opportunities, an

Understanding the influences and impact of patient-clinician communication in cancer care.

BACKGROUND: Patient-clinician communication is thought to be central to care outcomes, but when and how communication affects patient outcomes is not well understood. OBJECTIVE: We propose a conceptual model and classification framework upon which the empirical evidence base for the impact of patient-clinician communication can be summarized and further built. DESIGN: We use the proposed model and framework to summarize findings from two recent systematic reviews, one evaluating the use of shared decision making (SDM) on cancer care outcomes and the other evaluating the role of physician rec

Tonsillotomy: facts and fiction.

In contrast to total or extracapsular tonsillectomy (TE), subtotal/intracapsular/partial tonsillectomy (SIPT) or tonsillotomy (TT) is associated with significant less postoperative morbidity. It has been stated that patients older than 8 years of age or with a history of tonsillitis should be excluded from SIPT/TT. Some health insurance companies mandate utilization of particular surgical instruments. Finally, it has been stated that the remaining tonsillar tissue may become a subject of recurrent tonsillitis or tonsillar regrowth, in both cases requiring revision surgery in terms of TE. This
