Automated classification of maxillary and mandibular dental views on intraoral photographs: a comparative benchmark study and mobile proof-of-concept.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly explored in dentistry to improve workflow efficiency and support image-based analysis. This study benchmarks deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) approaches for classifying pediatric dental views using a publicly available dataset of 9,562 intraoral images from children aged 1-14 years, covering eight maxillary and mandibular view classes. Under 10-fold cross-validation, MobileNetV2 achieved the highest performance among DL models (accuracy 95.18%, F1-score 0.95, AUC 0.997), followed by InceptionV3 (93.76%) and Xception (93.07%). Among ML methods

Association of PTH1R Gene Polymorphisms with Three-Dimensional Mandibular Morphology Across Three Recruitment Cohorts.

Parathyroid hormone 1 receptor (PTH1R) regulates chondrocyte differentiation and mandibular condylar cartilage development, but its contribution to adult mandibular morphology remains unclear. We investigated associations of two PTH1R single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), rs724448 and rs2242116, with three-dimensional mandibular morphology in 448 orthodontic patients recruited in Japan (199), Korea (79), and Egypt (170). Salivary DNA was genotyped, and computed tomography images were analyzed using geometric morphometrics and conventional measurements. Multivariate Procrustes analysis evalua

Visor Flap-Assisted Segmental Mandibulectomy and Immediate Free Fibula Reconstruction for Extensive Plexiform Ameloblastoma of the Anterior Mandible: A Case Report.

Ameloblastoma is a benign but locally aggressive odontogenic tumour commonly affecting the mandible. This case report describes the surgical management of mandibular ameloblastoma in a 65-year-old male with a gradually enlarging anterior mandibular swelling for two years. Clinical and radiological evaluation revealed an expansile lesion in the symphyseal region, and histopathology confirmed plexiform ameloblastoma. Considering the lesion's extent, segmental mandibulectomy was performed using a visor flap and pull-through approach. Immediate reconstruction was achieved with a pre-bent 2.5-mm ti

Evaluation of Condylar Space Measurements before and after Prosthetic Rehabilitation in a Defined Cohort using Cone-beam Computed Tomography: A Prospective, Preliminary, Interventional Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The temporomandibular joints (TMJs) play a crucial role in maintaining functional harmony of the stomatognathic system. Loss of natural dentition and the resulting alteration in mandibular positioning can lead to imbalances in the TMJs, contributing to temporomandibular disorders. The present study aimed to assess the relationship between posterior edentulousness and condylar space measurements before and after prosthetic rehabilitation in a defined cohort using cone-beam computed tomography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective, preliminary, interventional study was condu

Longitudinal assessment of age-related changes in antegonial notch depth in untreated individuals.

INTRODUCTION: The role of the antegonial notch as an indicator of growth remains controversial in the literature. This study examined how antegonial notch depth changes during growth and whether craniofacial morphology is associated with its depth. METHODS: A longitudinal sample of 250 untreated healthy individuals (42% female) from the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation Craniofacial Growth Legacy Collection was analysed at three time points: ages 7-8, 13-14, and 17-18 years. Antegonial notch depth was measured from standardized lateral cephalograms. Multilevel general linear re

Incidence of Osteoradionecrosis and Dental Implant Survival in Patients With Irradiated Head and Neck Malignancies: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

This systematic review and meta-analysis assessed dental implant survival and osteoradionecrosis (ORN) after implant placement in irradiated patients with head and neck malignancies. Fourteen observational studies fulfilled the eligibility criteria, and 11 were suitable for a quantitative assessment of implant survival. Overall, dental implants showed good survival in irradiated tissues, but there was a wide variation among studies. Survival tended to be higher in the mandible than in the maxilla, but the difference between anatomical sites was not statistically significant. ORN following impl

Retrospective CBCT-based anatomical assessment of mandibular first and second molars: a cross-sectional study with potential implications for immediate implant planning.

Immediate implant placement in mandibular molar sockets can shorten treatment and reduce the number of surgical interventions, but the anatomy of the posterior mandible may limit implant positioning and increase surgical risk. This study evaluated six cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)-derived anatomical parameters in mandibular first and second molars. This retrospective cross-sectional study included 25 CBCT scans from 25 adults, providing 100 molar sites (#36, #37, #46, and #47). Buccal bone thickness, crestal bone width, crestal bone height loss, vertical bone height, root apex-to-inferi

A poorly differentiated salivary carcinoma NOS of the sublingual gland initially presenting as sialolithiasis: implications for early re-assessment in clinical practice.

A 31-year-old woman was referred to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department with a hard swelling in the right floor of the mouth which had the clinical appearance of a salivary calculus. Plain radiography did not demonstrate a radiopacity; however, subsequent ultrasound examination supported this finding. Three months after the initial consultation, while waiting for removal of the calculus, the patient re-presented with mobility of the lower anterior teeth and progressive swelling, prompting repeat orthopantomography and an urgent computed tomography scan of the mandible. These revealed

Comparison of the aesthetic impact on the mandibular angle of two types of osteotomy.

The growing aesthetic demand for projection and definition of the mandibular angle has challenged oral and maxillofacial surgeons, requiring new approaches to osteotomies during orthognathic surgery. This study was undertaken to compare the conventional sagittal split osteotomy (SSO) with anterior oblique osteotomy (AOO) regarding their effects on the mandibular angle in both bone and soft tissue outcomes. A longitudinal observational cohort study was conducted with patients who underwent orthognathic surgery, including pre- and postoperative computed tomography and photographic examinations w

Morphological, Radiographic and Three-Dimensional Scanning Characterization of the Skull and Mandible of the American Crocodile (Crocodylus acutus).

The American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) is a widely distributed Neotropical species for which detailed osteological descriptions of the skull and mandible remain scarce. This study provides an integrative characterization of the cranial and mandibular complex using gross anatomy, descriptive cranial morphometry, radiography, and three-dimensional (3D) scanning. Four skulls and mandibles from post mortem specimens were prepared following standard osteological procedures, and descriptive cranial measurements were recorded. Radiographic projection allowed visualization of bone margins, cranial

Non-union of Bone Plating in a Mandibular Fracture With Osteomyelitis: A Case Report.

Mandibular fractures are a common occurrence, often associated with complex complications such as non-union and osteomyelitis. Non-union, the failure of a fracture to heal, can be particularly challenging in the mandible due to the limited soft tissue coverage and compromised blood supply in atrophic areas. Additionally, the presence of osteomyelitis, a bone infection, further complicates the healing process and increases the risk of implant failure. This case report aims to provide an overview of the management strategies for non-union of bone plating with mandibular fracture associated with

Prominent mandibular tori and multifocal maxillary osseous outgrowths in post mortem forensic imaging: A case report.

Prominent oral osseous outgrowths may be useful for forensic identification but may also create diagnostic uncertainty. This report documents marked mandibular tori associated with multifocal surface-based maxillary osseous outgrowths and evaluates their forensic significance. A 71-year-old man, found deceased in a parked vehicle in an advanced state of decomposition, underwent medicolegal autopsy and whole-body post mortem computed tomography (PMCT). Macroscopic findings, axial PMCT images, and three-dimensional volume-rendered reconstructions were assessed. Previous ante mortem imaging was r
