A retrospective epidemiological study of screening-derived solid cancer incidence proxy rates in South Korea before and after COVID-19 using Korean National Health Insurance Service data.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted cancer screening and diagnostic pathways globally. Aggregate screening-derived indicators require cautious interpretation because they do not represent confirmed cancer registry incidence but might reflect program participation, referral patterns, and denominator composition. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate pre- and post-COVID-19 changes in selected solid cancer screening-derived incidence proxy rates in South Korea, and to estimate model-based proxy rates through 2028. METHODS: This retrospective ecological longitudinal study analyzed publicly available ag

Impact of a zero-visitation policy on healthcare-associated infections in a non-COVID intensive care unit: A retrospective cohort study.

The impact of visitor restrictions in intensive care units (ICUs) during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) remains unclear. This study aimed to compare HAI rates between the pre-pandemic restricted-visitation period and the pandemic zero-visitation period in a non-COVID tertiary ICU. This single-center retrospective cohort study included patients admitted to the Anesthesiology and Reanimation ICU of the Duzce University Health Practice and Research Center between March 14, 2019, and March 13, 2021. Patients admitted during the pre-pande

The advances and challenges of mRNA-LNP application in fields of hematology and oncology therapeutics.

The rapidly global deployment of COVID-19 mRNA-LNP vaccines established the clinical feasibility of combining RNA medicine with LNP delivery systems, transforming a long-standing experimental concept into a scalable therapeutic modality, previously considered impossible. Currently, the value of mRNA-LNPs has been expanding from infectious disease vaccines to cancer immunotherapy, personalized neoantigen vaccination, in vivo immune-cell engineering, protein replacement therapy, mRNA-encoded biologics and genome editing, with particular relevance to hematology and oncology. However, in hematolog

Association between COVID-19 vaccination, SARS-CoV-2 infection, and oral lichen planus (OLP) flares: Results from a patient survey.

BACKGROUND: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic immune-mediated mucocutaneous disease. During the COVID-19 pandemic, new cases and flares of OLP were reported after SARS-CoV-2 infection or vaccination. Immune activation and cytokine release triggered by infection or vaccines are proposed mechanisms, although current evidence is limited. Clarifying this relationship is important for improving patient counseling and management during vaccination efforts. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to explore the association with an increased occurrence of OLP flares following COVID-19 vaccination or infectio

Integrated Assessment of Humoral and Cellular SARS-CoV-2 Immunity Using ELISA and a Gold Nanoparticle-Based IGRA.

Although SARS-CoV-2 immunity has been widely investigated, the relationship between antibody levels and cellular immune responses following different routes of exposure to SARS-CoV-2 remains not fully revealed. In this study, cellular immunity was assessed using a newly developed whole-blood interferon-gamma release assay (nano-IGRA) based on gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-conjugated SARS-CoV-2 antigens. AuNP-conjugated and soluble antigens were compared regarding interferon gamma (IFN-γ) responses and intra- and interassay reproducibility in 112 individuals with immunity acquired through infection,

Glutathione Depletion in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: Mechanistic Significance and Potential Association with Ventilatory Support.

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is a severe and life-threatening form of acute lung injury with high mortality. It affects approximately 150,000-190,000 patients annually in the United States, and a substantial proportion of patients require invasive mechanical ventilation for respiratory support. The progression of ARDS involves thrombo-inflammation, the disruption of the alveolar-capillary barrier, and oxidative injury within pulmonary tissues. Across diverse ARDS etiologies such as sepsis, aspiration, trauma, and COVID-19, the excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS)

Impact of E-visits on Outpatient Volume and Service Time: Evidence from a Large Public Hospital in China.

The emergence of electronic visits (e-visits) as a convenient, efficient alternative to in-person outpatient care has reshaped service delivery in large public hospitals in China. However, how this dual-channel outpatient model reshapes overall medical demand and clinicians' service patterns remains insufficiently understood. Drawing on real-world data from a large public hospital in China, this study systematically estimates the impacts of e-visits on outpatient volumes and clinicians' service time. The authors adopt a twofold difference-in-differences model employed for the analysis that acc

A multiscale mechanical model for flexible spike protein-mediated SARS-CoV-2 viral entry into host cells.

The COVID-19 pandemic has so far been sustained by recurrent outbreaks, largely owing to the strong contagiousness of SARS-CoV-2 (SARS2). Here, to explain its high infectivity from a mechanical viewpoint, we propose a multiscale mechanical model that links molecular-scale binding with cell-scale endocytosis in the initial stage of viral entry mediated by flexible spike (S) proteins. With three hinges in the stalk domain, SARS2-S has unanticipated orientational freedom, giving rise to a high binding affinity up to 10 times that of SARS-S binding with ACE2. Interestingly, when SARS2-S is in the
