Black Death of 1348 in Florence and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) in the 650th anniversary of the death of the writer Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375).

The 650th anniversary of the death of the Tuscan writer Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375) provides an opportunity to reread some pages of his masterpiece, the Decameron, from a historical-medical perspective. In this work, Boccaccio gives an account of the "Black Death", a devastating pandemic of bubonic plague, which reached Europe, Messina (Sicily), from Asia Minor in September of 1347. The plague travelled along the commercial route taken by Genoese sailors returning from their strategic trading posts at Kaffa on the Crimean Peninsula, which was under siege by the Mongols. The framework, the c

Patient-reported factors determining long-term follow-up after total knee arthroplasty in individuals with knee osteoarthritis visiting a tertiary care hospital.

PURPOSE: Postoperative follow-up after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in individuals with knee osteoarthritis (OA) is essential for patients, surgeons, and rehabilitation specialists to monitor patient prognosis. Loss to follow-up is a common problem noted following surgery, and many factors influence follow-up. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to report patient-reported factors determining long-term follow-up after TKA in individuals with knee OA visiting a tertiary care hospital. METHODS: Patients who underwent TKA from January 2021 to December 2022 at a tertiary care hospital in

The impact of COVID-19 vaccine reactions on secondary vaccine hesitancy.

BACKGROUND: Primary and booster vaccinations are critical for mitigating COVID-19 transmission, morbidity, and mortality. Future booster vaccine campaigns rely on an increased understanding of vaccine hesitancy. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate self-reported allergic and skin vaccine reactions as factors potentially associated with vaccine hesitancy in a nationwide vaccine allergy registry. METHODS: Responses to survey questions concerning COVID-19 vaccine perceptions, coded from free text by 2 independent reviewers. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to determine the association betwe

COVID-19 psychosis versus psychosis due to cytotoxic lesion of the corpus callosum (CLOCC): A case report and review.

BACKGROUND: Cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum syndrome (CLOCC) is an inflammatory disorder caused by various etiologies such as medications, malignancies, seizure, metabolic abnormalities, and infections, especially COVID-19. It presents on MRI as an area of restricted diffusion in the corpus callosum. We present a case of psychosis and CLOCC in a patient with mild active COVID-19 infection. CASE: A 25-year-old male with a history of asthma and unclear past psychiatric history presented to the emergency room with shortness of breath, chest pain, and disorganized behavior. His-COVID-19

SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity and subsequent infection risk in healthy young adults: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Whether young adults who are infected with SARS-CoV-2 are at risk of subsequent infection is uncertain. We investigated the risk of subsequent SARS-CoV-2 infection among young adults seropositive for a previous infection. METHODS: This analysis was performed as part of the prospective COVID-19 Health Action Response for Marines study (CHARM). CHARM included predominantly male US Marine recruits, aged 18-20 years, following a 2-week unsupervised quarantine at home. After the home quarantine period, upon arrival at a Marine-supervised 2-week quarantine facility (college campus or ho

Post-COVID-19 Kawasaki-Like Syndrome.

A 42-year-old man was referred for a week history of severe dysphagia, odynophagia, fever (39 °C), fatigue, abdominal pain, pharyngeal swelling, and multiple neck lymphadenopathies. The medical history reported a mild form of COVID-19 one month ago. The biology reported an unspecified inflammatory syndrome. The patient developed peritonitis, myocarditis, and hepatitis. A myocardium biopsy was performed. A diagnosis of Kawasaki-like disease (KLD) was performed. The occurrence of KLD in adults is rare but has to be known by otolaryngologists regarding the otolaryngological clinical presentation

"This Is Not the Original Timeline": A Case Report of an Extended Dissociative Episode in a Healthy Young Male Accompanied with Severe Decline in Mental State.

Dissociation is a disconnection between a person's thoughts, memories, feelings, actions, or sense of who he or she is. Dissociative disorders can be described and understood using the combination of five core symptoms: amnesia, depersonalisation, derealisation, identity confusion, or identity alteration. They are frequently associated with previous experience of trauma. The challenge in diagnosis and the lifetime prevalence of approximately 10% in the general population and clinical psychiatric setting ensures the relevance of this case. We write about a 21-year-old gentleman with history of

Learning From Past Respiratory Infections to Predict COVID-19 Outcomes: Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: For the clinical care of patients with well-established diseases, randomized trials, literature, and research are supplemented with clinical judgment to understand disease prognosis and inform treatment choices. In the void created by a lack of clinical experience with COVID-19, artificial intelligence (AI) may be an important tool to bolster clinical judgment and decision making. However, a lack of clinical data restricts the design and development of such AI tools, particularly in preparation for an impending crisis or pandemic. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and test th

A Phase I/II Clinical Trial to evaluate the efficacy of baricitinib to prevent respiratory insufficiency progression in onco-hematological patients affected with COVID19: A structured summary of a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Baricitinib is supposed to have a double effect on SARS-CoV2 infection. Firstly, it reduces the inflammatory response through the inhibition of the Januse-Kinase signalling transducer and activator of transcription (JAK-STAT) pathway. Moreover, it reduces the receptor mediated viral endocytosis by AP2-associated protein kinase 1 (AAK1) inhibition. We propose the use of baricinitib to prevent the progression of the respiratory insufficiency in SARS-CoV2 pneumonia in onco-haematological patients. In this phase Ib/II study, the primary objective in the safety cohort is to describe the
