Soft tissue and dentoskeletal changes associated with mandibular molar distalization using clear aligner therapy: a retrospective cross-sectional CBCT study.

This retrospective study aims to determine the changes in soft and hard tissue parameters after mandibular molar distalization using clear aligners and its correlation with the treatment duration, and the amount of molar distalization. 23 adult patients (15 Female, 8 Male) were included in this study. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images were evaluated for soft and hard tissue parameters especially lower facial profile including lip and chin. Paired sample t test and the Wilcoxon signed rank test were used to compare changes before and after molar distalization. Bivariate Pearson correl

Gli1+ Cells Exhibit Clonogenicity and Slow-Cycling Features at the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Enthesis-Condyle Interface.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) relies on specialized progenitor cells for tissue maintenance and repair. We characterized TMJ-derived progenitor cells in mice and investigated the role of Evc2-mediated Hedgehog signaling. Progenitor cells from the anterior TMJ exhibited greater colony-forming capacity and an elongated morphology, while posterior cells were cuboidal, highlighting regional heterogeneity. TMJ-derived progenitors demonstrated multipotency, differentiating into osteogenic and chondrogenic lineages. Gli1-expressing, slow-cycling cells localized to the ligament attachment regions,

Three-dimensional comparison of nasal changes following segmented and non-segmented Le Fort I osteotomies.

BACKGROUND: Le Fort I osteotomy can lead to significant changes in nasal soft tissue, potentially affecting facial aesthetics. While previous studies have explored these effects, few have used three-dimensional photogrammetry or accounted for maxillary segmentation and movement. OBJECTIVE: This retrospective matched case-control study compares nasal soft tissue changes one year after segmented versus non-segmented Le Fort I osteotomies using 3D stereophotogrammetry. METHODS: Forty-nine patients who underwent segmented or non-segmented Le Fort I osteotomy between 2016 and 2021 were included.

Assessment of changes in selected parameters of Arnett's soft tissue cephalometric analysis (STCA) in patients undergoing SARME/SARPE.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary constriction in adults often requires surgically assisted maxillary expansion. While skeletal and dental changes are well described, soft-tissue effects remain less clear. This study evaluated soft-tissue changes using selected parameters of Arnett's soft tissue cephalometric analysis (STCA) after bone-borne SARME. METHODS: This retrospective observational cohort study included 42 adults (mean age 27.67 years) who underwent SARME with a bone-borne distractor. Lateral cephalograms were obtained preoperatively and 6-8 months post-expansion. Sixteen STCA parameters and angl

Developmental dynamics of catshark cranial neural crest cells provide insights into gnathostome facial evolution.

Cranial neural crest cells (CNCCs) are a vertebrate-specific, multipotent cell population central to facial morphogenesis and a cellular substrate for evolutionary change. Although core CNCC developmental programmes are deeply conserved, changes in their gene expression programmes and cell behaviour underlie both macroevolutionary transitions and microevolutionary adaptations. While CNCC biology has been well characterized in bony vertebrates, comparatively little is known about CNCC properties and the behaviour of their derivatives in cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes). To address this gap

Correction of tear trough deformity in young patients without eyebags using orbital fat reposition and release of tear trough ligament.

BACKGROUND: Tear trough deformity (TTD) is a periorbital hollow extending from the medial canthus to the midpupillary line, which is mainly caused by the traction of the tear trough ligament (TTL). This study aimed to present a retroseptal transconjunctival lower-eyelid blepharoplasty with orbital fat reposition and release of TTL for correcting TTD in young patients without eyebags. METHODS: Seventy-nine young patients with TTD without eyebags receiving the described technique were retrospectively reviewed from September 2020 to April 2023. TTD was preoperatively categorized into different H

Lower facial third projection: Analysis using true vertical lines from subnasale and soft Nasion.

Orthognathic surgery is essential for correcting certain malocclusions and enhancing facial aesthetics. However, determining the ideal positioning of facial structures remains a topic of debate. This study aims to propose numerical references for surgical planning by determining the optimal sagittal projection of the maxillary incisors in aesthetically attractive Caucasian patients. An observational and retrospective study was conducted using cephalometric and photographic records of 89 patients' lateral profiles. These images were evaluated on a 10-point scale by orthodontists, maxillofacial

Effects of extended guided bone regeneration on the labial alveolar wall of adjacent teeth in the anterior maxilla: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The thin labial alveolar wall (LAW) of anterior maxillary teeth is prone to resorption after flap surgery, jeopardizing aesthetic outcomes. This study evaluated whether extended guided bone regeneration (GBR) to cover the LAW of adjacent teeth mitigates this bone loss. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we categorized adjacent teeth into three groups according to the intraoperative extension of the graft relative to the LAW: Non-Extended GBR (NE-GBR; graft confined to edentulous site), Partially Extended GBR (PE-GBR; graft on partial BBW), and Fully Extended GBR (FE-GBR;

Accuracy of face scan-based virtual facebow records: A comparison between two registration methods.

PURPOSE: Accurate maxillary positioning is critical in digital prosthodontics, particularly when transferring the spatial relationship of the maxilla to a virtual articulator. This study aimed to compare the accuracy of the two most common registration methods, three-dimensional (3D) match and UV (landmark-based point-pair registration) match, for virtual facebow transfer and to investigate whether the type of facial scanner used influences the accuracy of these registration techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan of a manikin was used as the reference.

Virtual reconstruction and analysis of the face of DFN3-150 Paradolichopithecus aff. arvernensis specimen from Dafnero, Greece.

The systematics of the Eurasian Late Pliocene - Early Pleistocene monkey Paradolichopithecus is a long-debated topic in primate paleontology. This taxon's phylogenetic position has implications for our understanding of cercopithecid evolution: while it is often regarded as a baboon-like Macacina, an alternative taxonomic attribution to the Papionina subtribe has been proposed. This would challenge the commonly accepted hypothesis that baboons constitute an endemic African clade. Here, we reconstructed the face of the subadult female DFN3-150 Paradolichopithecus aff. arvernensis cranium from th

Polycomb chromatin topology enables long-range enhancer recruitment during craniofacial development.

Little is known about how three-dimensional chromatin topology shapes mammalian craniofacial development. In mouse cranial neural crest cells, a Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 (PRC2)-dependent chromatin architecture is established before migration. This configuration maintains craniofacial gene promoters poised and connects them with distal Polycomb tethering elements, positioning promoters in spatial proximity to future long-range enhancers. Deletion of Ezh2 disrupts this early topology, causing inappropriate gene derepression in post-migratory craniofacial subpopulations where these genes are

Location and applied anatomy of the mandibular foramen among individuals of different sagittal facial types in Asians.

BACKGROUND: Failure of inferior alveolar nerve block may be attributable to anatomical variations in the location of the mandibular foramen. This study aimed to determine the 3D location of the mandibular foramen (MF) using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and compare the measurements across different sagittal facial types in Asians. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CBCT scans of 60 mandibles (10 retrognathic, 10 normal, 10 prognathic per gender) were analyzed. The injection pathway was simulated as a line through MF and contralateral lower premolar (MF-cL4). The distances from MF to ramus borders

Combined partial coronoidectomy and reduction malarplasty versus reduction malarplasty alone in patients with elongated coronoid processes: A comparative retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Reduction malarplasty is a common procedure for midface contouring in Asian populations. However, patients with elongated coronoid processes face an increased risk of postoperative mouth opening restriction. This study aims to evaluate whether combining partial coronoidectomy with reduction malarplasty yields superior outcomes compared to malarplasty alone in this specific patient population. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 54 patients (2019-2024) with radiologically confirmed elongated coronoid processes. Patients were divided into two groups: Group A (n = 27)
