Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia in the elderly, pathologically defined by extracellular amyloid-β plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) composed of hyperphosphorylated tau. The Braak staging system established that tau pathology spreads in a stereotypical pattern across the brain, supporting the "prion-like" hypothesis: misfolded tau aggregates serve as seeds, inducing the misfolding and aggregation of normal tau, and thereby driving disease progression along neuroanatomical pathways. In the past 5 years (2021-2026), substantial advances have elucid

The emergence of dye pollutants into aquatic environments necessitates the development of efficient, stable, and reusable adsorbents for wastewater treatment. In this study, hierarchically porous bacterial cellulose-derived biochar/poly(acrylic acid) (BCC-PAA) hydrogel beads were synthesized via gradual pH adjustment, constructing a three-dimensional network containing PAA-derived -COOH groups, oxygen-containing functionalities associated with the BCC-derived carbonaceous component and hydrogel network, and distinct BCC-derived carbonaceous domains. Physicochemical analyses revealed a highly p

BACKGROUND: Acute appendicitis is the most common non-obstetric surgical emergency in pregnancy. Diagnosis is difficult due to atypical symptoms, anatomical changes, and limited imaging utility, while delayed diagnosis increases maternal-fetal risks. This study compared clinical, laboratory, imaging and perioperative outcomes between pregnant and non-pregnant women.
METHODS: This analysis included a multi-centered retrospective case-control study from July 1, 2020 to December 30, 2025. The operative characteristics involved in the pregnancy women were investigated using univariate analyses.

An individual's relatedness to its group may change with age due to demographic processes, and such kinship dynamics can shape age-linked social behaviors. Existing models, however, have focused almost exclusively on dispersal and mating, leaving the consequences of group size local variation unexplored. Here, we extend these models to incorporate such variation within a single, genetically connected meta-population. We then contrast predicted kinship dynamics and age-linked selection for helping/harming in coexisting smaller and larger groups in three typical social mammal systems characteriz

BACKGROUND: In-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) is associated with high mortality, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where monitoring, emergency response systems, and post-resuscitation resources are limited. Evidence from Somalia remains scarce. This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics, arrest circumstances, resuscitation-process documentation, short-term outcomes, and exploratory factors associated with return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) among adult IHCA patients in a resource-limited emergency department in Mogadishu, Somalia.
METHODS: This prospective o

Nowadays, intensive research is directed to green hydrogen production as an alternative to the depleting fossil fuel resources. Shifting from conventional hydrogen production routes, which rely on hydrocarbon reforming, toward cleaner and more sustainable pathways is a pivotal strategy to support decarbonization and minimize harmful emissions. Water and biomass are two abundant and sustainable resources that can serve as a promising green hydrogen feedstock. Water splitting into its constituents can be achieved by electrolysis, photocatalysis, and thermochemical techniques, while biomass can b

BACKGROUND: Despite the growing importance of Health Systems Science (HSS), many emergency medicine (EM) residency programs lack a formal, comprehensive curriculum for health policy and advocacy.
METHODS: We developed a longitudinal Health Policy and Advocacy curriculum by mapping core components, based off those originally proposed in the New England Journal of Medicine, to ACGME milestones. The components were refined through expert ranking by physicians attending the ACEP Teaching Fellowship to identify high-yield topics specific to emergency medicine, such as the health care safety net, m

The rapid accumulation of waste materials and the rising demand for clean energy have encouraged the development of sustainable technologies capable of converting waste into functional power-generating devices. Waste-based triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) represent a sustainable and emerging class of energy-harvesting devices that convert mechanical energy into electricity while utilizing abundant waste-derived materials. This review summarizes recent advances in the use of agricultural residues, fruit and vegetable peels, textile waste, paper waste, plastics, and industrial by-products as

Artificial intelligence (AI) models perform well on retrospective internal medicine datasets, but few have been deployed prospectively as clinician-facing decision support and evaluated for their effect on care. The purpose of this study was to synthesise original primary research evaluating prospectively deployed AI-based clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) in adult internal medicine and acute general medical care. Five databases were searched from inception to 31 May 2026 for original peer-reviewed studies in which an AI-derived CDSS was deployed in a live clinical workflow and compare

Health professions education is experiencing a paradigm shift, from a focus on the structures and processes of education to a focus on the outcomes health professionals must demonstrate to meet the healthcare needs of the public served. The Competency-based Health Professions Education (CBHPE) movement now has two decades of implementation experience in some contexts. Educators across health professions working on the design, planning, implementation, or maintenance of competency-based systems can benefit from the lessons learned through implementation efforts to date. In this manuscript, the

INTRODUCTION: Graduate medical education (GME) selection processes may pose significant barriers to implementing competency-based health professions education (CBHPE). Current selection metrics are largely nonpredictive of future success, and the removal of clerkship grades has given rise to a shadow economy of effort focused on publications, research hours, and other activities that detract from clinical training. This misalignment between selection practices and CBHPE principles constitutes a wicked problem that requires innovative approaches to develop new solutions.
METHODS: We conducted

Metal-sulfur (M-S) batteries are emerging as promising solutions for future energy storage, thanks to their high theoretical energy density and the plentiful supply of sulfur. Among these, sodium-sulfur (Na-S) batteries are gaining popularity as affordable alternatives to lithium-sulfur (Li-S) systems because sodium is widely available and low-cost. However, developing effective room-temperature Na-S batteries for practical use remains challenging because sluggish reaction kinetics, sodium polysulfide dissolution, and shuttle effects together drive rapid capacity degradation. This comprehensiv

Artificial intelligence (AI) is entering orthopaedic education through image interpretation, simulation, technical skill assessment, examination support and content generation. Most evidence, however, comes from undergraduate and postgraduate settings, whereas practising surgeons require continuing medical education and continuing professional development (CME/CPD) that supports safe adoption, maintenance of competence and practice improvement. This matters because AI may improve task performance while it is present without producing durable learning or safer independent practice. This critica

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common gastrointestinal disease of preterm neonatal infants. The hallmarks of the disease include severe intestinal necrosis and systemic inflammation leading to overwhelming sepsis. There remains significant morbidity and mortality attributed to NEC, raising the urgency to investigate potential causative mechanisms in order to treat and potentially prevent the disease. This review will summarize the established and emerging mechanisms leading to NEC, including toll-like receptor 4 activation by gram-negative bacteria, microbial dysbiosis, a maladapt

Glioblastoma (GBM) is among the most lethal primary brain tumors, owing to its highly invasive nature and pronounced resistance to conventional therapies. Emerging physical treatment modalities, such as tumor treating fields (TTFs), offer drug-free therapeutic alternatives. However, their clinical efficacy remains constrained by limited field strength and poor spatial control in deep brain regions. Moreover, a single physical stimulus is often inadequate to achieve sustained tumor suppression, highlighting the need for complementary therapeutic modalities. Herein, we report a multifunctional t

S100 calcium-binding protein B (S100B) is conventionally viewed as a marker of astrocytic injury, blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption, and neurological disorders. Emerging evidence places S100B within the broader brain-gut-liver axis of inflammatory signaling. This review proposes that S100B is a glial-derived integrating effector that couples enteric glial activation, barrier dysfunction, hepatic fibrosis, and hepatic encephalopathy (HE) into a multi-organ inflammatory network. Its spatial expression map, release kinetics, alarmin (damage-associated molecular pattern, DAMP) activity, and imm

Autoimmune neurological diseases affecting the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and neuromuscular junction are frequently refractory to conventional B-cell-depleting therapies such as CD20-directed monoclonal antibodies, highlighting a need for more effective treatment approaches. Chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell therapy, initially developed for haematological malignancy, has been repurposed to more comprehensively deplete pathogenic B-cell and plasma cell populations in autoimmune disease, raising the possibility of durable, treatment-free remission. This scoping revi

Zinc is an essential trace mineral involved in numerous biological processes, including growth, antioxidant defense, immune function, and intestinal integrity in broiler chickens. Optimizing its bioavailability remains an important objective in modern poultry nutrition. Nanotechnology has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance zinc bioavailability while potentially reducing dietary inclusion levels and environmental zinc excretion. Current evidence suggests that nano zinc supplementation may enhance antioxidant capacity, modulate immune responses, support intestinal health, and improve pro

The efficient recovery of shale oil is severely hindered by the strong oil-solid interactions and nanoscale confinement within shale reservoirs, which substantially restrict crude oil mobility. Although surfactant flooding has emerged as an effective enhanced oil recovery technique, the microscopic mechanisms by which cationic surfactants promote oil detachment in nanopores remain insufficiently understood. In this study, molecular dynamics simulations are performed to systematically investigate the interfacial mechanisms of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-induced oil droplet detachment
