Nasal Carriage of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Sciuri Group by Residents of an Urban Informal Settlement in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: The Staphylococcus sciuri group constitutes animal-associated bacteria but can comprise up to 4% of coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from human clinical samples. They are reservoirs of resistance genes that are transferable to Staphylococcus aureus but their distribution in communities in sub-Saharan Africa is unknown despite the clinical importance of methicillin-resistant S. aureus. OBJECTIVES: We characterised methicillin-resistant S. sciuri group isolates from nasal swabs of presumably healthy people living in an informal settlement in Nairobi to identify their resist

Antimicrobial resistance and clonality of Staphylococcus aureus causing bacteraemia in children admitted to the Manhiça District Hospital, Mozambique, over two decades.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the main causes of bacteraemia, associated with high mortality, mainly due to the occurrence of multidrug resistant (MDR) strains. Data on antibiotic susceptibility and genetic lineages of bacteraemic S. aureus are still scarce in Mozambique. The study aims to describe the antibiotic susceptibility and clonality of S. aureus isolated from blood cultures of children admitted to the Manhiça District Hospital over two decades (2001-2019). METHODS: A total of 336 S. aureus isolates detected in blood cultures of children aged <5 years were analyzed for a

A Staphylococcus capitis strain with unusual bacteriocin production.

Staphylococcus capitis is a member of the human and mammal skin microbiomes and is considered less harmful than Staphylococcus aureus. S. capitis subsp. urealyticus BN2 was isolated from a cat and expressed strong antibacterial activity against a range of Gram-positive species, most notably including S. aureus strains with resistance to methicillin (MRSA) and strains with intermediate resistance to vancomycin (VISA). These latter strains are normally relatively resistant to bacteriocins, due to cell wall and cell membrane modifications. Genomic sequencing showed that the strain harboured at le

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Coagulase-Negative Staphylococcus from School Dining Rooms in Argentina.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) constitutes an important cause for concern in the field of public health, and the role of the food chain in the transmission of this pathogen and in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has not yet been defined. The objectives of this work were to isolate and characterize coagulase-positive Staphylococcus (CoPS) and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS), particularly S. aureus, from school dining rooms located in Argentina. From 95 samples that were obtained from handlers, inert surfaces, food, and air in 10 establishments, 30 Staphylococcus stra

An exploration of mechanisms underlying Desemzia incerta colonization resistance to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus on the skin.

Colonization of human skin and nares by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) leads to community spread of MRSA. This spread is exacerbated by transfer of MRSA between humans and livestock, particularly swine. Here we capitalized on the shared features between human and porcine skin, including shared MRSA colonization, to study novel bacterial mediators of MRSA colonization resistance. We focused on the poorly studied bacterial species Desemzia incerta, which we found to exert antimicrobial activity through a secreted product and exhibited colonization resistance against MRSA in a

Epidemiology and vancomycin susceptibility pattern of methicillin resistant coagulase negative Staphylococcal (CoNS) isolates from skin swabs of the surgical patients in the National Hospital of Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are commonly found in human skin as normal flora but are increasingly prevalent in hospital-acquired infec-tions, often exhibiting resistance to methicillin (MRCoNS). Vancomycin is the primary treatment for MRCoNS infections. This study aimed to assess MRCoNS pre-valence in a hospital community and evaluate Vancomycin effectiveness against MRCoNS. METHODS: Swabs from 102 hospitalized surgical patients were tested before the surgery for CoNS presence. Methicillin resistance was confirmed using cefoxitin discs. Vancomycin Minimum Inhibitory Co

Staphylococcus brunensis sp. nov. isolated from human clinical specimens with a staphylococcal cassette chromosome-related genomic island outside of the rlmH gene bearing the ccrDE recombinase gene complex.

The coagulase-negative staphylococci are important opportunistic human pathogens, which cause bloodstream and foreign body infections, mainly in immunocompromised patients. The mobile elements, primarily the staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec, which confers resistance to methicillin, are the key to the successful dissemination of staphylococci into healthcare and community settings. Here, we present a novel species of the Staphylococcus genus isolated from human clinical material. The detailed analysis of its genome revealed a previously undescribed genomic island, which is closely related

An Endogenous Staphylococcus aureus CRISPR-Cas System Limits Phage Proliferation and Is Efficiently Excised from the Genome as Part of the SCCmec Cassette.

CRISPR-Cas is an adaptive immune system that allows bacteria to inactivate mobile genetic elements. Approximately 50% of bacteria harbor CRISPR-Cas; however, in the human pathogen Staphylococcus aureus, CRISPR-Cas loci are less common and often studied in heterologous systems. We analyzed the prevalence of CRISPR-Cas in genomes of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains isolated in Denmark. Only 2.9% of the strains carried CRISPR-Cas systems, but for strains of sequence type ST630, over half were positive. All CRISPR-Cas loci were type III-A and located within the staphyloco

Vancomycin as an Antibacterial Agent Capped with Silver Nanoparticles: An Experimental Potential Analysis.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

For the treatment of various infections, a variety of antimicrobial drugs are formulated. Nevertheless, many bacterial infections now exhibit antibiotic resistance due to the widespread utilization antibiotics. Methicillin-resistant among the most dangerous multidrug-resistant bacteria is Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Vancomycin became a viable therapy option due to MRSA resistance to methicillin medicines. One of the well-informed antibacterial compounds with wideband antibacterial activity is silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). AgNPs are thus suitable candidates for usage in conjunction alongside

Distribution of chlorhexidine resistance genes among Staphylococcus aureus clinical isolates: the challenge of antiseptic resistance.

INTRODUCTION: Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic agent which is extensively used to prevent nosocomial infections; however, this could result in reduction of its susceptibility. The aim of this work was to determine chlorhexidine susceptibility among Staphylococcus aureus isolates and to detect qacA/B and smr antiseptic resistance genes among these isolates. Furthermore, we aimed to identify possible risk factors for the reduction of chlorhexidine susceptibility among S. aureus isolates. METHODS: Various clinical samples were collected from patients with evidence of S. aureus infection. Antimicro

[Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis infectious keratitis: Clinical and microbiological profile].

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococcus epidermidis (SE) is a common cause of bacterial keratitis in certain geographic areas. A high percentage of resistance to methicillin is shown, which gives it cross resistance to beta-lactams and sometimes resistance to other antibacterial groups. We analyzed clinical and microbiological variables in patients with infectious keratitis due to SE. METHODS: Medical records of 43 patients with suspected infectious keratitis and microbiological confirmation for SE, between October 2017 and October 2020, were retrospectively studied. Clinical characteristics (risk facto

Occurrence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in 'coalho' cheese produced in Brazil.

The experiments reported in this research communication analysed the presence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in 112 samples of 'coalho' cheese, from 56 dairy producing farms in 28 cities in all mesoregions of the State of Ceará, Brazil. To assess antimicrobial resistance we also examined the presence of genes encoding enterotoxins and toxic shock syndrome toxin, as well as the presence of the blaZ gene for β-lactamases, and resistance to oxacillin. The research found 69 isolates of S. aureus, of which 13.04% had the mecA gene encoding the penicillin-binding protein, whic
