The aim of this study was to identify catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) episodes, to determine the causative agents and antibiotic susceptibility profiles, demographic characteristics, and clinical outcomes of patients treated in the pediatric bone marrow transplant (BMT) unit between November 2019 and July 2022. Forty patients were included in the study. The median patient age was 7.5 years (range: 1.5 to 19.9 y) and the most common underlying disease was ALL (77.5%). CRBSI was found to be significantly higher in haploidentic donors ( P <0.001). When CRBSI was confirmed, 65% of t

Background: Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections. It works by interfering with RNA synthesis, altering cell membrane permeability, and inhibiting peptidoglycan synthesis in the cell wall. The recommended therapeutic concentration of vancomycin in plasma and serum is 5.0-40 μg mL-1, reflecting a narrow therapeutic window that can lead to toxic side effects and bacterial resistance if the concentration is too high or too low. Monitoring vancomycin in a low-cost and convenient way is significant in administering accurate dosages of vancomycin to preve

Central line associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) is the most severe complication of indwelling intravascular catheters and one of the most common causes of intensive care unit (ICU)- or hospital-acquired infections. Once CLABSI occurs, it significantly increases the risk of mortality, long of hospital stay, and healthcare economic burden. In recent years, multiple large-scale clinical studies on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of CLABSI have been completed, providing evidence-based medical support for related practices. Additionally, evolving global trends in antibiotic resistan

OBJECTIVES: Acinetobacter baumannii bacteremia caused by pandrug-resistant strains poses a major challenge in intensive care units, necessitating novel therapeutic approaches. Phage-derived depolymerases offer a promising adjunct to conventional antibiotics. However, studies on A. baumannii phage depolymerases have been limited to non-mammalian models. This study investigates the therapeutic efficacy, safety, and potential mechanisms of action of DPO-HL, both as a monotherapy and in combination with polymyxin B, in a murine model of A. baumannii bacteremia.
METHODS: DPO-HL was expressed and p

BACKGROUND: Neonatal sepsis is a leading cause of child mortality, and this burden is rising secondary to increasing antimicrobial resistance worldwide. There are marked global disparities in the burden of antimicrobial resistance, with Southeast Asia identified as a region of particular concern. Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country, with 4.2 million babies born each year. Despite this, there remains limited published data on the burden of neonatal sepsis and antimicrobial resistance in the country.
METHODS: We conducted a 2-year analysis of the epidemiology of neonatal sepsi

The rapid rise of antibiotic resistance among bacterial pathogens threatens global health, rendering many existing drugs ineffective and creating an urgent demand for new therapeutic strategies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work reporting the detailed antibacterial mechanism of action of twelve targeted genes. Here, we evaluated the marine-derived compound CDPDP for its antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (S.A.) and Riemerella anatipestifer (R.A.), demonstrating potent bactericidal effects (IC50 = 300 μM for S.A.; 100 μM for R.A.). In recent decades, Acinetobacter baumannii has become a major global nosocomial pathogen, with bloodstream infections (BSIs) exhibiting mortality rates exceeding 60% and imposing substantial economic burdens. However, limited large-scale genomic epidemiology has hindered understanding of its population dynamics. Here, we analyzed 1506 non-repetitive BSI-causing A. baumannii isolates from 76 Chinese hospitals over a decade (2011-2021). We identified 149 sequence types (STs) and 101 K-locus types (KLs), revealing increased population diversity. International clone (IC) 2 accounted for 81.74% of

BACKGROUND: Serratia marcescens is a common opportunistic pathogen in hospitals. Its carbapenem-resistant strains, especially those carrying the blaKPC-2 gene, pose a serious challenge to clinical infection treatment.
METHODS: In this study, we identified 14 strains that were positive for blaKPC-2 from tertiary hospitals in Zhejiang Province, China, through phenotypic tests and sequencing. We also incorporated data from the GenBank public database, resulting in a total of 2005 Serratia strains included for bioinformatic analysis.
RESULTS: A total of 121 strains (6.03%) were found to carry bl

BACKGROUND: Gut pathogen colonization with vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) is common in the intensive care unit (ICU) and is associated with worse clinical outcomes; however, the timing of VRE colonization and its collateral effects on the gut microbiome are incompletely understood.
METHODS: Medical ICU patients admitted with sepsis and receiving broad-spectrum antibiotics were sampled via deep rectal swabs at ICU admission and on ICU day 3, 7, 14, and 30. Rectal swabs were cultured for VRE on selective media and analyzed via 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing.
RESULTS: Ninety patient

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health challenge, underscoring the urgent need for new therapeutic options. In this study, a series of salicylidenehydrazine derivatives were synthesized and characterized using spectroscopic techniques. Their antimycobacterial activity was assessed against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv. Among the 35 synthesized compounds, nine demonstrated significant inhibitory activity, with MIC values ranging from 0.78 to 50 μM. These active molecules were further evaluated against clinical isoniazid-resistant (bearing inhA promoter and/or katG mutations) and mul

Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus (VRE) is one of the key antibiotic-resistant pathogens that challenges the health system with its threat to human health. Most VRE infections occur in hospital settings as these pathogens are known to colonize hospital environments and maintain their viability for long periods. Without good infection control measures, these pathogens can spread in the hospital setting and cause hospital-acquired infections including bacteremia. In this study, we report the isolation of VRE from patient samples hospitalized in four Palestinian hospitals. The American Society fo

The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) plasmids poses a significant global public health threat. This study characterized a novel multi-replicon IncN-R MDR plasmid pCUVET19-1426.1, harboring blaCTX-M-55 and 12 additional antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in a newly identified Escherichia coli sequence type 13037, isolated from a canine prostatic abscess. Using antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiling and genomic analysis, we elucidated the characteristics, evolution, and transferability of plasmid pCUVET19-1426.1, which contributed to the extensively drug-resistant phenotype of the bac

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhagic septicemia is a highly fatal disease of cattle caused by the bacteria; Pasteurella multocida serotypes B and E in Asia and Africa respectively. Even though the capsular serotype E is considered to be the common cause of Hemorrhagic septicemia in Africa, there is not enough evidence that other serotypes are not involved. Furthermore, the serotypes currently circulating in South West Ethiopia have not been identified. This study was carried out to identify circulating capsular serotypes of Pasteurella multocida and assess its antimicrobial resistance on hemorrhagic Septic

Background: Loma Linda University Medical Center has had rates of hospital-onset vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus blood stream infections (HO VRE BSIs) above the statewide rate among major teaching hospitals in California. We sought to identify factors associated with this high rate. Methods: We conducted retrospective case-control studies, first comparing cases of HO VRE BSI with controls with HO vancomycin sensitive Enterococcus BSI. HO BSI was defined as a positive blood culture specimen collected ≥72 h after hospital admission. Inpatients were identified from microbiology records 2016-202

Biofilms significantly impede the efficacy of conventional antimicrobial agents, particularly in multidrug-resistant (MDR) infections. In this work, we developed a size-adaptive, bismuth-based nanomicrobicide encapsulated with neutrophil membranes (Bi2S3/SNP@CM), designed to selectively generate nitric oxide (NO) within acidic biofilms under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. The nanomicrobicide's adaptive size ensures deeper biofilm penetration and accumulation, while the neutrophil membrane coating enhances biocompatibility and targeting at infection sites. Upon NIR irradiation, localized heat

KPC-producing K. pneumoniae is rare in Japan. In China, KPC-2-producing sequence type (ST)11 K. pneumoniae isolates have been rapidly increasing, and a subset of these isolates have acquired hypervirulence. We report a case of a 39-year-old Japanese male who developed bacteremia and intra-abdominal abscesses caused by hypervirulent carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae. The patient sustained abdominal injuries following a traffic accident in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and underwent abdominal surgery before being transferred to our hospital. Abscess drainage was performed, and he was initial

Background: Surgical site infections (SSIs) constitute major yet preventable complications. Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) are evidence-based interventions recommended to reduce SSI incidence, yet their implementation and impact in India remain poorly characterized. This study aimed to assess current ASP implementation and SSI surveillance practices in Indian hospitals to identify gaps and inform future interventions. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional survey of five geographically diverse Indian academic medical centers was conducted between 2017 and 2021, assessing existing AS

Bloodstream infections (BSIs) pose significant risks to individuals with leukemia, and Escherichia coli stands out as a prevalent cause in these infections. This research sought to explore the impact of sub-inhibitory concentrations (sub-MIC) of ciprofloxacin, imipenem, ceftriaxone, and the combined use of ceftriaxone and ciprofloxacin on the expression of virulence factors and toxin-antitoxin genes in E. coli strains obtained from leukemia patients. Twelve clinical strains of E. coli that demonstrated resistance to ciprofloxacin, imipenem, and ceftriaxone and contained the chosen virulence an
