Diabetes mellitus is a global public health concern, with diabetic foot infections (DFIs) being common clinical complications among affected patients. Bacterial isolates resistant to commonly used antimicrobial drugs are becoming more prevalent in DFIs. Some research suggests that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) may inhibit bacterial growth, making it a promising biological therapy. Therefore, an in vitro experimental study was conducted on 53 multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial strains isolated from DFIs. The isolates were methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), MDR Klebsiella pneumoni

UNLABELLED: The war in Ukraine, initiated in 2022, triggered a massive humanitarian crisis with millions displaced. This population exodus posed significant healthcare challenges, including the spread of infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. Factors such as disrupted healthcare services, inappropriate antimicrobial use and environmental contamination contributed to increased bacterial resistance. In this context, in 2023 an 86-year-old Ukrainian migrant was treated in a Spanish hospital for severe infections complicated by MDR bacteria. During hospitalisation, complex resist

The rising incidence of drug-resistant bacterial infections poses a significant threat to human health and highlights the urgent need for novel antimicrobial agents. In the present study, inspired by cationic antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) we developed a series of amphiphilic small-molecule peptidomimetics by incorporating adamantane as the hydrophobic moiety and alkylamines as hydrophilic moiety into the scaffold of natural amino acids to combat drug-resistant bacteria. Among them, the optimized compound A13 exhibited broad spectrum antimicrobial activity, especially against various Gram-posit

The application of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) towards the adsorption of antibiotics is a new and emerging area of study. The rise in use or misuse of antibiotic products has exacerbated their ongoing presence and persistence in the natural environment. Even at low concentrations, antibiotic residues exert pressure on bacterial populations, eventually leading to the emergence of resistant bacteria. Metal-organic frameworks, known for their high porosity, vast specific surface area, and ease of modification, have emerged to be a promising and sustainable antibiotic adsorbent. In an effort t

Botanicals have shown promise in mitigating antibiotic resistance in bacteria. This study examined the efficacy of methanolic extracts from two food plants (Nephelium lappaceum and Hyphaene thebaica), alone and in combination with antibiotics, against critical class priority bacteria, including multi-drug resistant (MDR) strains and clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter aerogenes, and Escherichia coli. The herbals underwent testing using a 96-well microplate serial dilution technique before being analyzed for their effects on ba

Klebsiella spp., the second leading cause of bacteraemia in the UK, are major nosocomial pathogens. We investigated the epidemiology of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Klebsiella spp. in Aberdeen, Scotland and England. Twenty-four ESBL producers underwent whole-genome sequencing and typing using MLST. Sequence types were queried in the Bacterial Isolate Genome Sequence Database (BIGSdb) to assess phylogenetic relationships using Parsnp, and resistance/virulence genes were identified by Kleborate. Plasmids were assembled with plasmidSPAdes. All isolates had the bla SHV, with thre

This study delivers a comprehensive retrospective analysis addressing the growing clinical concern of antimicrobial resistance in patients undergoing prostate biopsy. By evaluating prophylactic strategies in light of local resistance patterns and individual risk profiles, the authors highlight the limitations of standardized regimens and advocate for tailored, data-driven interventions. The findings not only enhance our understanding of infection prevention in urology but also reinforce the importance of antimicrobial stewardship and personalized care. This work contributes valuable insights t

Candida auris causes hospital outbreaks and life-threatening infections, is recognized as a global health threat, and was designated a priority pathogen by the World Health Organization (WHO). Since the data on C. auris fungemias are quite scarce and limited to small retrospective case series, this international study aimed to prospectively assess patient characteristics, outcomes, and therapeutic approaches. The study, conducted through the Infectious Diseases-International Research Initiative (ID-IRI) platform, involved 34 referral centers. Patients with C. auris candidemia were prospectivel

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) poses a significant global health threat that requires novel antimicrobials to combat this WHO-designated priority pathogen. In this study, we designed, synthesized and evaluated a series of unexplored trisindoline derivatives against MRSA, including multidrug-resistant (MDR) clinical isolates. The Structure Activity Relationship (SAR) analysis of the trisindolines indicated the importance of strategic substitutions in the trisindoline core for their anti-staphylococcal efficacy. Biocompatibility studies revealed a high safety profile for the

Urosepsis is the most serious type of urinary tract infection, and its incidence is gradually increasing. The pathogenic flora that emerge in urosepsis associated with urinary stones are complex, virulent, and resistant to antibiotics, and empirical antibiotics are not always effective in treating them. This study aims to analyze the distribution of pathogenic bacteria, as well as the sensitivity of antibiotics to these bacteria, in patients with urosepsis associated urinary stones. The case data of patients treated at our single-center hospital between July 2015 and February 2025 were retrosp

Every year, bacterial infections lead to over 7.7 million deaths, with 4.95 million of these caused by drug-resistant organisms. This growing resistance emphasizes the urgent need for a different approach to combat bacterial infections. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) offer a promising solution due to their unique mechanisms of action. However, their clinical application is often limited by their instability under extreme physiological conditions like high temperatures. To address this limitation, this study focuses on extracting and characterizing AMPs from thermophilic bacteria, specifically B

Bloodstream infections (BSIs) caused by multidrug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MDRPA) and carbapenem resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPA) accounted for high morbidity and mortality. This retrospective cohort study aimed to determine risk factors for MDRPA and CRPA BSIs by examining both clinical and laboratory data of inpatients with MDRPA and CRPA BSIs at two tertiary care hospitals in 2017-2021. Generalized linear mixed models were used to identify risk factors for MDRPA and CRPA BSIs. Factors significantly associated with both MDRPA BSIs and CRPA BSIs included central venous cathete

Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic pathogen causing severe infections in patients residing in intensive care units. The ability of A. baumannii to acquire carbapenem-resistance makes these infections difficult to treat and poses a serious risk for global health. In fact, carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii isolates belonging to eleven international clones (IC1-11), especially IC2, have disseminated globally, generating outbreaks and epidemics. Persistence of A. baumannii in nosocomial settings is favored by its ability to produce biofilm and resist to biocides. However, investigations a

Treating multidrug-resistant (MDR) infections has become progressively dependent on limited therapeutic options, particularly polymyxins, such as colistin. This reliance has precipitated a concerning epidemiological trend: the emergence and global propagation of plasmid-mediated (mcr) as well as chromosome-mediated polymyxin resistance. Consequently, escalating resistance rates will certainly lead to diminished clinical efficacy of colistin, correlating with elevated mortality in septic patients who already face therapeutic limitations. Utilizing antimicrobial potentiators to restore the sensi

Antimicrobial resistance poses a major challenge in the treatment of Acinetobacter baumannii. Acinetobacter spp. are intrinsically resistant to a number of commonly used antibiotics. Over the past 3 years, the European and American Professional Societies have provided important guidelines on the treatment options for carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii (CRAB). Here, we review the recent literature on combination regimens for CRAB as well as carbapenem-susceptible A. baumannii infections. We discuss the strengths and weaknesses of various agents used in combination, depending on the site of infec
