Technological Potential of Native Lactic Acid Bacteria from Brazilian Canastra Cheese: Safety and Functional Characterization.

Canastra artisanal Minas cheese is a traditional Brazilian raw-milk cheese whose fermentation relies on "pingo", an endogenous whey culture that harbors autochthonous lactic acid bacteria (LAB) with technological relevance. This study evaluated the safety and technological properties of LAB isolated from pingo and cheeses from Serra da Canastra region, Brazil. Among 199 presumptive LAB isolates screened for hemolytic activity, mucin degradation, and antibiotic susceptibility, 116 met the preliminary safety criteria. Rep-PCR and partial 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed 16 genetic groups, mainl

Single-NIR Triggered Triple-Modal Therapy: Synergistic PTT/PDT and Ultrafast Ag(II) Release via a Van Der Waals Silver Porphyrin/Graphene-TiO2 Heterojunction for MRSA-Infected Wounds.

The escalating threat of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, especially methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), urgently demands integrated multimodal therapies. However, it remains challenging to develop all-in-one platforms that synchronize photothermal therapy (PTT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), and ion release under a single near-infrared (NIR) trigger. Herein, a van der Waals composite AgPor/Hj, assembled from Ag(II) porphyrin and graphene-TiO2 heterojunction, is reported. Synergistic hot hole injection from the heterojunction to the porphyrin macrocycle greatly enhances NIR ab

Antibiotic exposure and the emergence of multidrug resistant bacteria in patients with liver cirrhosis: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Infections caused by multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) are a growing concern in patients with advanced chronic liver disease and acute-on-chronic liver failure, worsening clinical outcomes. Although prior antibiotic exposure is associated with resistance, prospectively defined, clinically actionable exposure thresholds in this population are lacking. We aimed to quantify cumulative-exposure thresholds for de novo MDRO acquisition and assess the prognostic impact of MDRO emergence on survival. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 256 consecutive adults with advanced chronic liver

Challenge of antimicrobial-resistant organisms in neonatal intensive care units: a comprehensive review.

The escalation of antibiotic-resistant organisms (AROs) represents a formidable challenge to clinical practice and public health globally. Within the landscape of Gram-positive pathogens, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vancomycin-resistant enterococci remain the most prevalent threats. Concurrently, the rise of Gram-negative AROs, including multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales, has severely curtailed available therapeutic options. These pathogens are associated with significant morbidity and mortality in neonatal

Antibacterial efficacy of Cassia seena sp. leaf extracts against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli: a phytochemical and toxicological evaluation.

The rising antimicrobial resistance of clinically relevant organisms, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, has triggered researchers' attention to natural medicinal plants as an alternative source of antibacterial agents. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial, phytochemical, and toxicological activities of Cassia senna leaf. The n-hexane, methanolic, and aqueous extracts of Cassia leaves were assayed for antibacterial activity using agar well diffusion, disc diffusion, and broth microdilution assays with gentamicin, vancomycin, and chloramphenicol. The majo

Synthesis and antibacterial profiling of novel pyrimidine-sulfonyl chlorides: a new class of antimicrobials targeting multidrug-resistant bacterial strains.

Bacteria's ability to resist current antibiotics has grave implications for future treatment options. Herein, we report novel pyrimidine-sulfonyl chloride derivatives as potential antimicrobial agents against multi-drug resistance, synthesised through a molecular hybridisation technique. FTIR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR analysis data corroborated the structural confirmation of all synthesised compounds. The compounds were screened against a panel of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains. Cell permeability assays were also performed for MRSA and

Deep Herpes in an Adolescent With Severe Atopic Dermatitis and Concurrent Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Bacteremia.

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is a well-recognized complication of atopic dermatitis, most commonly presenting as eczema herpeticum. Deep herpes is a recently described clinicopathologic manifestation of HSV infection, characterized by viral involvement of cutaneous stromal cells with limited or absent epidermal infection, which can make diagnosis challenging when classic histopathologic findings are absent. We report a 17-year-old adolescent with severe atopic dermatitis who presented with fever and a rapidly progressive painful erosive eruption. Evaluation revealed methicillin-resista

Streptococcal mutanobactin mediates interspecies competition with gram-positive bacteria.

Polymicrobial communities where bacteria must compete with each other to persist can serve as a source of uncharacterized antibacterial compounds to develop drugs for the treatment of drug-resistant infections. This study investigates interbacterial competition between bacteria found in the oral cavity, where Streptococcus species comprise a large portion of the resident oral microbiota, and Enterococcus faecalis is a pathobiont that is commonly found in root canal infections. We used co-cultures to determine whether oral streptococci and E. faecalis compete with each other. Our experiments re
