Background: Auricular carcinoma is a malignant neoplasm arising from the epithelial or adnexal tissues of the external ear, most commonly representing cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, or, less frequently, melanoma, characterized by early cartilage invasion and regional spread due to the thin soft-tissue envelope of the ear. Several benign and malignant tumors can be observed on the skin of the external ear at various ages, and some are specifically located in this area. Large lesions can be disfiguring and impair hearing by obstructing the external auditory canal. OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Examine the presentation and management characteristics of seven patients with melanoma of the external auditory canal (EAC).
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series and review of the relevant literature.
METHODS: Records of seven patients from 2003 to 2017 with melanoma of the EAC were reviewed for characteristics of presentation, subsequent management, and outcomes. A thorough review of relevant literature is presented.
RESULTS: The median age is 52 years, with four females. The average Breslow depth was 3.6 mm, with five patients having a Clark level IV or greater

Primary malignant melanoma of the external auditory canal is rarely reported. In this 5-year follow-up study, 60 auricular non-melanoma skin cancers, selected at a skin tumour clinic, were treated by a thorough curettage with different sized curettes followed by cryosurgery in a double freeze-thaw cycle. Tumours of the external auditory canal were excluded. Forty-seven basal cell carcinomas (BCCs), nine squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs), three Bowen's disease and one basisquamous cancer were included.
