Hydrogen is generally considered a future sustainable energy carrier, and its electrochemical synthesis is based on the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Nonetheless, a high energy barrier and slow reaction kinetics plague the OER, posing huge obstacles to efficient hydrogen production. In order to address the shortcoming, designing efficient electrocatalysts is essential to enhancing the efficiency and scalability of the OER. On the other hand, the emergence of life-threatening pollutants has pushed researchers towards designing photocatalysts for photo-in

Bacillus anthracis, a Gram-positive, spore-forming bacterium, poses significant public health risks due to its zoonotic potential and historical use in bioterrorism. Pathogenicity of B. anthracis is primarily attributed to its genetic components, including the essential plasmids pXO1 and pXO2. The pXO1 plasmid encodes toxic factors, while pXO2 facilitates immune evasion. The zoonotic potential, as well as potential bio-threat, necessitates investigation into novel therapeutic targets. Through metabolic network analysis, docking, and notably subtractive genomics, researchers have effectively pi

UNLABELLED: We surveyed plague in the Apodemus chevrieri-Eothenomys miletus natural plague focus on the Yunnan Plateau, China. From 2023 to 2025, plague-positive E. miletus were detected in Gaomei, Xiaomachang, and Tangshang. In the brain tissue of an E. miletus carcass, both Yersinia pestis and a Yersinia pestis-specific bacteriophage (YN2024) were simultaneously isolated, and their simultaneous presence was observed via transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This observation was supported by previous analysis of a similar co-occurrence of Y. pestis and bacteriophage from the Marmota himalay

PURPOSE: Despite being genetically very closely related and sharing many phenotypical characteristics, Escherichia coli and Shigella spp. are regarded as distinct entities in epidemiology and clinical practice. Rapid and accurate discrimination is crucial for infection prevention and control and for surveillance. Presently they are distinguishable by laborious and time-consuming laboratory methods only. This study addressed the challenge of differentiating Escherichia coli and Shigella species by combining Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) with machine learning as an automated typ

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are emerging environmental contaminants, but how human-associated management practices are associated with mobile resistomes in endangered wildlife remains poorly resolved. Here, we used fecal metagenomics to compare Przewalski's horses, Mongolian khulans, and domestic horses from Xinjiang, China, including Przewalski's horses from a protected area and a captive-breeding setting under human management. Across 47 fecal metagenomes, we identified 380 ARG subtypes, 23 metal resistance gene (MRG) types, and 26 mobile genetic element (MGE) subtypes. Przewalski's h

The emergence of antimicrobial resistance among ESKAPE pathogens represents a major One Health challenge, yet several clinically relevant members of this group remain underrecognized in companion animals because of diagnostic limitations and research bias. This review critically evaluates current evidence on neglected ESKAPE pathogens in dogs and cats, with particular emphasis on diagnostic blind spots, antimicrobial resistance, zoonotic implications, and the potential of phytotherapeutic strategies. A structured literature search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, complemented by reports

BACKGROUND: Escherichia coli (E. coli) from food-producing animals serves as an important reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). To investigate the baseline genomic and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) profiles of bovine-associated E. coli from northern China, 143 fecal samples were collected across five provinces for analysis.
RESULTS: A total of 112 E. coli isolates were recovered from 143 bovine fecal samples, with isolation rates ranging from 60 to 100%. Disk diffusion testing revealed high resistance to ampicillin (81.25%), cefotaxime (75.89%), and tetracycline (75.89%), and 68.7

We report a confirmed case of Chlamydia psittaci meningitis in Latin America, diagnosed in a 50-year-old farm worker from Chile. Diagnosis was established via cerebrospinal fluid quantitative real-time PCR and serology. The patient recovered after antimicrobial treatment. This case highlights the need to consider zoonotic pathogens in atypical meningitis.

Leptospirosis is a significant zoonotic disease and previous studies have confirmed its presence in Bangladesh. Despite its potential to cause severe illness and death, the disease is frequently under-recognized because of limited diagnostic facilities and insufficient clinical awareness. This cross-sectional descriptive type of observational study was aimed to isolate Leptospira spp. from human urine by culture in a resource-limited setting at Mymensingh Medical College, Mymensingh, Bangladesh from October 2024 to March 2025. A total of 20 urine samples from clinically suspected cases of lept

Immune gene families frequently produce numerous non-coding transcripts, yet their biological functions remain largely unexplored. Here, using the arthropod immunoglobulin domain-containing lectin (IgLec) family as a paradigm, we provide evidence that this complexity may reflect a critical defensive function for non-coding transcripts in antiviral immunity. IgLec is restricted to decapod infraorders (Brachyura and Astacidea), and a structurally related bacterial homolog suggests its origin may involve horizontal gene transfer. The IgLec family generates extraordinary transcript diversity throu

Macrophage-expressed gene 1 [Mpeg1/Perforin-2 (PRF2)] is an ancient metazoan protein belonging to the membrane attack complex/perforin (MACPF) branch of the MACPF/cholesterol dependent cytolysin (CDC) superfamily of pore-forming proteins (PFPs). However, the mechanism of Mpeg-mediated bacterial damage remains unclear in invertebrates. In the present study, a macrophage expressed gene was identified in Crassostrea gigas and designated as CgMpeg1a. The complete cDNA of CgMpeg1a is 2641 bp in length, containing an ORF of 1953 bp, which encodes a putative protein of 650 amino acids with a predicte

BACKGROUND: Bovine leptospirosis is a zoonosis of global importance that is associated with reproductive losses. Although diagnosis in females has advanced, genital infection in males remains poorly understood. This cross-sectional study aimed to compare diagnostic methods and sample types for detecting bovine genital leptospirosis (BGL) in bulls under field conditions.
METHODS: Blood, urine, semen and preputial cytology samples were collected from 37 unvaccinated bulls and analysed by serology (microscopic agglutination test -MAT) and lipL32-PCR.
RESULTS: Serology showed low seroreactivity

Melioidosis, caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, produces a wide range of clinical manifestations and may be difficult to diagnose in the pediatric population. We describe the case of a 12-year-old girl with poorly controlled type 1 diabetes mellitus that posed diagnostic challenges. Over 4 months, she experienced relapsing fever, multiple splenic abscesses with a 'target sign' on ultrasonography, right-sided preseptal cellulitis, and a left thigh ulcer. Repeated cultures of superficial swabs and blood yielded no growth of bacteria. Radiological mimicry and culture-negative results raised con

Community-acquired fungemia in immunocompetent hosts remains exceptionally rare. Kodamaea ohmeri is an emerging opportunistic yeast pathogen increasingly recognised as a cause of invasive fungal infections, particularly among immunocompromised individuals and in healthcare settings. A 33-year-old previously healthy female farmer presented with severe leptospirosis with multiorgan dysfunction. Blood cultures obtained before central venous catheter insertion grew K. ohmeri, identified by the VITEK 2 YST card and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrom

Melioidosis, caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, remains challenging to diagnose promptly, partly due to limited use of virulence factors as diagnostic targets. Most existing biomarkers fail to capture the dynamic expression of bacterial virulence factors during active infection. In vivo‑upregulated virulence determinants, such as Hcp1, POMCR/PPEP, and GroEL, are intrinsically superior diagnostic targets. Hcp1 is a paradigm: it is the most advanced virulence factor translated into a point‑of‑care test, with prospective validation in endemic settings. Mechanistic understanding of virulence reg

Vaccination has been shown to be effective in the prevention, control and even eradication of animal diseases for more than a century. The use of vaccines in animals can also reduce, or totally prevent, the need to use antibiotics or other antimicrobial agents such as antiparasitic or antivirals. Furthermore, vaccination in animals can also enhance public health, especially when used against zoonotic diseases. However, availability and access to animal vaccines are not always granted, owing to different challenges such as safety or efficacy issues, unfit ways of administration or logistic cons

Peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis caused by zoonotic pathogens is uncommon and diagnostically challenging. Neisseria zoodegmatis, a Gram-negative coccobacillus residing in the oral flora of cats and dogs, has been reported only once previously in PD-associated peritonitis, with zoonotic transmission inferred but unproven. We report the case of a 90-year-old patient receiving automated PD who developed peritonitis following cat bite-related transfer-set damage, with partial response to empirical therapy and subsequent relapse. Conventional culture and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry i

BACKGROUND: Bartonella species are Gram-negative bacteria transmitted by blood-feeding arthropods and maintained in a wide range of mammalian hosts worldwide. They are emerging and re-emerging pathogens at the wildlife-domestic, animal-human interface. Wild canids are considered important reservoirs and sentinels for vector-borne pathogens, including zoonotic species of Bartonella. This study evaluated the eco-epidemiological traits and diversity of Bartonella infections among wild canids from Israel.
METHODS: Between 2018 and 2025, blood samples from wild canids were collected across 158 sam
