Forty-one cases of typical melanocytic skin lesions (15 intradermal nevi, 14 Spitz nevi and 12 malignant melanomas) were used to investigate the value of staining of nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) in the differential diagnosis of such pigmented lesions. Histologic sections were stained by the silver colloid (Ag) method, with and without the prior use of a melanin blocking agent. There were statistically significant differences in the mean numbers of AgNORs per nucleus between the groups of lesions studied (1.658 for intradermal nevi, 3.0042 for Spitz nevi and 6.669 for malignant melanomas)

The mutual relation and prognostic value of three quantitative variables were investigated in a retrospective series of 56 stage I cutaneous malignant melanomas. Previous studies enumerating AgNORs in cutaneous melanocytic lesions have produced inconsistent results. It is probable that such inconsistencies arise from differences in fixation, staining technique, and counting strategies. Nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) are loops of ribosomal DNA seen in nuclei, which are demonstrable as black dots (AgNOR) in tissue sections by silver (Ag) colloid staining. A periodic eruption of porokeratosis developed in a 31-year-old black woman with chronic idiopathic hepatitis requiring liver transplantation. The clinicopathologic features were chiefly those of linear and punctate porokeratosis but overlapped those of porokeratosis plantaris, palmaris et disseminata and hyperkeratotic or verrucous porokeratosis. Typical cornoid lamellae were visible on histologic examination. Outbreaks of the lesions occurred during exacerbations of the liver disease. The skin condition rapidly improved after operation, with concomitant improvement in liver function.

We report a patient with idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome presenting with bilateral eosinophilic pleural effusions. He also had erythema elevatum diutinum, a rare skin disease of the vasculitic type. No cardiomyopathy was present. Pleural effusions, skin lesions, and blood eosinophilia disappeared with prolonged corticosteroid treatment.

Nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) are loops of DNA situated on the short arms of acrocentric chromosomes 13, 14, 15, 21, and 22; they can be demonstrated in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded sections by a one-step silver technique, the resulting black structures being termed AgNORs. Antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies (ANCA) are specific for constituents of neutrophil primary granules and monocyte lysosomes. There are different types of ANCA with different specificities.
