There are several approaches that can be applied to the analysis of malformations of the CNS. One practical way in making clinical correlations is to divide neural tube defects into those that arise during the period of neurulation and those that arise thereafter. This concept applies to cranial and spinal lesions and makes it possible to interpret clinical findings with embryological events. A patient is described who had polymyositis with arthritis, keratodermia blenorrhagica, pulmonary fibrosis, and cardiac failure with a right bundle branch block. We compared the clinical features, histopathology, immunopathology and immunogenetics of 30 patients with toxic erythema of pregnancy and 24 patients with herpes gestationis. The syndrome of multiple fibrofolliculomas with trichodiscomas and acrochordons clinically is characterized by asymptomatic dome-shaped papules primarily involving the head, neck, chest, back, and arms. From 1950 through 1975, 27 patients at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn, had coexistent psoriasis and lupus erythematosus (LE). Of the 27 patients, ten had systemic LE (SLE), 13 had discoid LE, and four had drug-induced LE or an SLE-like syndrome. The onset of psoriasis preceded LE in ten patients and was concomitant with it in six. Photosensitivity was noted in 23 patients. Seven autopsy cases of shoulder-hand syndrome following hemiplegia were studied with regard to cerebral localization. Epithelial lesions induced by irradiation of rat skin were studied to determine a) the relationship of malignancy to dose, b) the types of lesions and circumstances leading to overt malignancy, and c) the growth rates of lesions progressing to malignancy versus those of lesions remaining benign. Open malformations of the central nervous system may involve the brain or spinal cord, or both. Preliminary experiments in which a window was cut in the shell overlying early chick embryos (with removal of 2 ml of albumen) produced a range of neural and non-neural malformations. A case of Bean's syndrome is reported in which a wide variety of vascular malformations are illustrated. Among these were multiple arterio-venous malformations including a so-called vein of Galen aneurysm. A comparison of this case with those in the literature suggests that the pathology in patients with Bean's syndrome may be more varied than heretofore recognized, and that an overlap between this syndrome and the Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome may exist.

Our experiments have confirmed the fact that the so called bacterial allergies are dependent upon a mechanism which differs materially from that determining true protein anaphylaxis.
