The role of asbestos in the etiology of lung cancer and of mesothelioma of the pleura and peritoneum has been well documented. The evidence for a causal association between asbestos and other human cancers is not as extensive but suggests that asbestos may be carcinogenic at several different sites. Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a neoplasm closely associated with asbestos exposure, which has been implicated in 70-80% of the cases. Cytogenetic study was made of mesothelioma cells from 14 patients. Metaphases were obtained from 12 tumors and revealed aneuploidy and clonal abnormalities in 9 specimens. Using a modified papain digestion cetylpyridinium salt precipitation method, glycosaminoglycans were isolated from 21 mesotheliomas, 34 primary lung carcinomas, 12 carcinomas of other sites, and 7 soft tissue sarcomas.
