Management of Refractory Mandibular Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma with Sirolimus: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a rare vascular neoplasm of intermediate malignancy that generally occurs in infancy and early childhood. Typically, the lesion arises from superficial or deep soft tissues of the extremities, trunk and retroperitoneum. The paucity of reported cases of head and neck KHEs is evidence of the rarity of the disease in this region. We report on the presentation and treatment of KHE in an 11-month-old boy who presented with a mandibular lesion. We include a brief discussion about the differential diagnosis of KHE. Management involved preoperative intervention

Impact of human adipose tissue-derived stem cells on dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans cells in an indirect co-culture: an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Autologous adipose tissue transfer may be performed for aesthetic needs following the resection of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP), the most common cutaneous soft tissue sarcoma, excluding Kaposi sarcoma. The regenerative effectiveness of cell-assisted lipotransfer is dependent on the presence of adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ADSCs). This is the first study to evaluate the potential oncological risks as ADSCs could unintentionally be sited within the proximity of the tumor microenvironment of DFSP cells. METHODS: Primary DFSP cells were indirectly co-cultured with ADSC

Surgical management and oncological outcome of non-squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx: a bicentric study.

PURPOSE: Non-squamous cell carcinoma (non-SCC) accounts for about 5% of laryngeal malignancies. Survival data are limited, and consensus on management principles is lacking. The present study reviews our experience in the surgical treatment of non-metastatic non-SCC of the larynx and compares oncological and functional outcomes in a cohort of patients affected by traditional SCC. METHODS: We collected data on 592 patients affected by laryngeal neoplasms. Univariate and multivariable survival analyses were performed using Cox proportional-hazards models; survival estimates were reported by haz

Occurrence of Second Primary Malignancies in Patients With Primary Optic Nerve Gliomas: A Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Analysis.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Advanced understanding of screening and therapeutic modalities acts as provision for increased survival in patients diagnosed with optic nerve gliomas. Secondary primary malignancies (SPMs) in patients diagnosed with primary optic nerve glioma (OPG) are currently an uncharacterized frontier. This US national database analysis highlights the incidences of SPMs in patients diagnosed with primary OPG. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Standardized incidence ratios (SIR) and excess absolute risk (EAR) for SPMs were calculated using the SEER-specific multiple outcome analysis. 95% SIR confide

Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma: clinicopathological characteristics of 8 cases of a rare vascular tumor and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a rare vascular tumor of intermediate malignant potential which shows locally aggressive growth but only rarely metastasizes. It is mostly considered to be a tumor of pediatric population but its occurrence in the adults is not uncommon as once considered. Histologically, KHE can mimic other soft tissue neoplasms of different behaviors (e.g. Kaposi Sarcoma, hemangioma) and establishing the correct diagnosis is important for appropriate treatment. Herein, we describe the clinicopathological features of 8 cases of KHE which will be helpful in

Ultrasonography of Pediatric Superficial Soft Tissue Tumors and Tumor-Like Lesions.

Ultrasonography (US) is usually the first imaging examination performed to evaluate palpable or visible superficial soft tissue lesions that are common in children. Although clinical assessments, such as age at presentation, clinical course, and overlying skin discoloration, are important for the differentiation of pediatric soft tissue lesions, US allows a specific diagnosis of some typical benign lesions and helps in guiding further investigation since it provides detailed information about the lesion location, characterization including solid versus cystic, vascularity, and compressibility.

Incidence and time trends of sarcoma (2000-2013): results from the French network of cancer registries (FRANCIM).

BACKGROUND: The exhaustive collection of new sarcoma cases and their second histologic review offer a unique opportunity to study their incidence and time trends in France according to the major subtypes. METHODS: Data were collected from population-based cancer registries covering 22% of the French population. Crude and world age-standardized incidence rates (ASR) were estimated according to anatomic, histological and genetic groups, age and sex over the 2010-2013 period. RESULTS: Time trends in incidence were calculated by the annual percent change over the 2000-2013 period. During the mos

Upper arm life-saving amputation of a 12 day-old neonate due to extensive vascular tumor of the upper extremity.

Vascular tumors in neonates are mostly benign; however, locally aggressive voluminous forms may destabilize the hemodynamics of a neonate. Herein, we present an unusual case of a neonatal giant vascular tumor in the right upper extremity, causing a consumption coagulopathy and acute deterioration of vital signs. The patient required mechanical ventilation, inotropic support, and administration of blood products by the seventh day. Vascular embolization attempts failed to improve the general condition of the patient. Due to the deteriorating and life-threatening general condition of the patient

Enhancing Antitumor Efficacy of Heavily Vascularized Tumors by RAMBO Virus through Decreased Tumor Endothelial Cell Activation.

Vascularization is a common pathology for many solid tumors, and therefore anti-angiogenic strategies are being investigated as a therapeutic target for treatment. Numerous studies are also being conducted regarding the effects of oncolytic viruses, including ImlygicTM, an FDA approved oncolytic herpes simplex virus-1 (oHSV) for the treatment of highly vascularized tumors such as Kaposi sarcoma (NCT04065152), and brain tumors. To our knowledge, the effects of combining oncolytic HSV with angiogenesis inhibition on endothelial cell activation has not been previously described. Here, we tested t

Isolated limb perfusion is an effective treatment modality for locally advanced Kaposi sarcoma of the extremities.

INTRODUCTION: Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a rare soft tissue sarcoma. In case of locally advanced disease, mutilating surgery such as amputations or major reconstructive procedures are sometimes inevitable. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of isolated limb perfusion (ILP) in patients with locally advanced KS of the extremities. MATERIAL AND METHODS: All patients who underwent ILP for KS between 1996 and 2018 at Erasmus MC, Rotterdam were identified. Clinical data was obtained from either a prospectively maintained database or retrospective assessment of patient files. RESUL

Initial prospective study of ambulatory mPCNL on upper urinary tract calculi.

BACKGROUND: exposure to dioxins has been associated with an increased risk of soft-tissue sarcoma (STS). In a study relating to 1989-1998, a significant excess of STS was found in the population living within a 2-kilometre radius of an industrial incinerator located inside a Mantua industrial site. In the years 1974-1991, the incinerator burned hazardous chlorine-containing waste that resulted in the emission of dioxins. After 1991, it was exclusively fed with organic synthetic products not containing chlorine. OBJECTIVES: the aim of this case-control study was to estimate the STS risk, for 1

Vascular tumors of the mediastinum.

Vascular tumors represent only a sliver of all tumors affecting the mediastinum, but they pose diagnostic challenges due to significant overlap among entities, ever-evolving classification schemes, and the exquisite rarity of some of the entities not only in the mediastinum but in pathology practice as a whole. Most of the vascular tumors are better known to the practice of soft tissue pathology, from which some of the knowledge of clinical behavior can be extrapolated. For example, the stratification of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) into two biologically separate categories has effec

Pyogenic Granuloma-Like Kaposi Sarcoma: A Diagnostic Challenge.

An 81-year-old woman presented with a 2-month history of a painless nodule on the left foot that bled easily after minor trauma. She had no medical history and did not report any preexisting lesion. Physical examination revealed a 2 cm × 3 cm, exophytic and reddish-colored nodule, with an ulcerated and soft surface (Figure 1). There were no other skin lesions or abnormal physical findings. The diagnosis of a pyogenic granuloma (PG) was suggested. A biopsy specimen was obtained from the center of the lesion and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Histopathologic examination revealed a marked pr

PD-1 blockade for disseminated Kaposi sarcoma in a patient with atopic dermatitis and chronic CD8 lymphopenia.

We describe a 53-year-old male patient with a history of long-standing atopic dermatitis (AD) who presented with disseminated Kaposi sarcoma (KS). Although he never had received long-term immunosuppressive treatment for his AD, he had a 16-year history of CD8 lymphopenia. Because of his heavily pretreated progressive KS in lymph nodes and soft tissues, we treated the patient using pembrolizumab 2 mg/kg body weight 3-weekly. On PET-computed tomography 3-months after the initiation of pembrolizumab therapy, a solid treatment response was detected in all tumor sites - 6-months later a mixed respo

Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma of the GI Tract: An Exception to Occam's Principle in an Adult with SBO.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a rare and locally aggressive vascular tumor with histological features resembling Kaposi sarcoma and capillary hemangioma mainly occurring in children and adolescents. Approximately 200 cases have been reported since its original description in 1993, with the vast majority presenting at an early age as raised ill-defined lesions with a red-blue hue mainly involving the skin and soft tissues in the extremities. Cases in adults remain extremely rare. Herein, we describe the case of a 29 year-old man who presented with progressive abdominal pain for 4 mon

Primary Sarcomas of the Larynx: A Single Institutional Experience with Ten Cases.

Sarcomas infrequently arise in the larynx where the vast majority of tumors are of epithelial origin. Given their rarity, studies of these lesions are limited in number. In this series, we describe our institutional experience with ten primary sarcomas of the larynx encountered over an 18 year period, comprising 1.9% of all laryngeal malignancies observed in this timeframe. The cases include four chondrosarcomas and one example each of osteosarcoma, embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, undifferentiated spindle cell sarcoma, well-differentiated liposarcoma, Kaposi sarcoma, and synovial sarcoma. Endothelial cell malignancies in infants, children and adolescents: Treatment results of three Cooperative Weichteilsarkom Studiengruppe (CWS) trials and one registry.

BACKGROUND: Endothelial cell malignancies are extremely rare in childhood. New identification of genetic abnormalities (WWTR1:CAMTA1 translocation) helps to recognize potential therapeutic targets. Little is known about treatment and outcome of these patients. METHODS: Clinical course, treatment, and outcome in patients with endothelial cell malignancies treated within the Cooperative Weichteilsarkom Studiengruppe (CWS) trials CWS-91, -96, -2002P, and the Soft-Tissue Sarcoma Registry (SoTiSaR) were analyzed (1991-2019). RESULTS: Patients had angiosarcoma (AS) (n = 12), malignant epithelioid

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma and tufted angioma - (epi)genetic analysis including genome-wide methylation profiling.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a locally aggressive vascular condition of childhood and is clinicopathologically related to tufted angioma (TA), a benign skin lesion. Due to their rarity molecular data are scarce. We investigated 7 KHE and 3 TA by comprehensive mutational analysis and genome-wide methylation profiling and compared the clustering, also with vascular malformations. Lesions were from 7 females and 3 males. The age range was 2 months to 9 years with a median of 10 months. KHEs arose in the soft tissue of the thigh (n = 2), retroperitoneum (n = 1), thoracal/abdominal (n =
