Soft tissue sarcomas in skin: presentations and management.

Soft tissue sarcomas are a rare but heterogeneous family of malignant tumors that are predominantly found deep to the integumentary layer. Only a small number of these primary mesenchymal tumors actually originate from the dermal layers. A systematic approach to the evaluation and workup of these neoplasms can prevent inappropriate management. After staging evaluation, most of these tumors are primarily managed with en-bloc surgical resection. Other adjuvant therapies routinely employed include chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Proper treatment typically involves participation of a multidisc

[Kaposi's sarcoma in the grafted lung].

The paper provides a clinical note. A 45-year-old patient suffered from severe primary emphysema and underwent bilateral lung transplantation. A year after surgery, exercise dyspnea again appeared in the patient. Lung computed tomography revealed multiple rounded soft tissue masses; thoracoscopic biopsy and further histological examination proved the development of Kaposi's sarcoma in the patient. The tumor disappeared completely following corrected immunosuppressive therapy. After 22 months of transplantation, the patient died from gastrointestinal bleeding. This case is of interest due to th

Neonatal kaposiform hemangioendothelioma of the spleen associated with Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma is a rare locally aggressive vascular tumor that usually manifests during early childhood. Typically the lesion presents with skin, soft tissue and bone involvement and is characterized histologically by ill-defined nodularity and the presence of spindle cells with resemblance to Kaposi's sarcoma. We report a rare neonatal case of a splenic kaposiform hemangioendothelioma associated with Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon that was diagnosed with radiographic imaging. Because of the rapid onset of thrombocytopenia and anemia, the patient required urgent splenectomy with

Clinical and prognostic significance of PD-1 and PD-L1 expression in sarcomas.

Programmed death-1 (PD-1) and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) are new targets in cancer immunotherapy in recent years. The aim of this study is to evaluate the PD-1/PD-L1 expressions in sarcomas and to determine association between PD-1/PD-L1 expressions and clinical/pathological properties in some sarcoma subtypes. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples from 65 cases with sarcomas were analyzed. Immunohistochemical staining was performed to detect the PD-1 and PD-L1 expressions in tumor tissue and microenvironment, separately. PD-1 expression in tumor tissue and microenvironment w

Treatment efficacy with electrochemotherapy: A multi-institutional prospective observational study on 376 patients with superficial tumors.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous metastases represent a therapeutic challenge. An increasing body of experience suggests that electrochemotherapy (ECT) provides effective tumor control, although its evidence basis should be strengthened. METHODS: This prospective, multicenter, observational study enrolled patients with superficial metastases, who underwent ECT at 10 centers between 2008 and 2013. Outcomes included adherence to European Standard Operating Procedures of ECT (ESOPE), tumor response, local progression-free survival (LPFS), toxicity and patient-reported outcomes (PROs, EORTC QLQ-C30 plus an

Diagnostic utility of FOSB immunohistochemistry in pseudomyogenic hemangioendothelioma and its histological mimics.

BACKGROUND: Pseudomyogenic hemangioendothelioma (PHE) is an unusual vascular tumor of intermediate malignancy that rarely metastasizes and tends to arise in the lower limbs of young adults and children. Histologically, PHE shows fascicular proliferation of eosinophilic spindle cells and/or epithelioid cells showing "pseudomyogenic" morphology. Immunohistochemically, PHE is usually positive for vimentin, cytokeratin, CD31 and ERG. METHOD: We examined FOSB immunohistochemistry (IHC) in 27 cases consisting of 4 PHE and its histologic mimics including 6 epithelioid hemangioendotheliomas (EHE), 8

Long-term outcome for kaposiform hemangioendothelioma: A report of two cases.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a rare aggressive vascular tumor of skin and deep soft tissues that typically presents in infancy and may be associated with a potentially life-threatening coagulopathy known as Kasabach-Merrit phenomenon (KMP). Recent advances in medical therapy have successfully treated many patients. However, our knowledge regarding the natural history of these lesions and optimum surveillance strategies remains rudimentary. We report two young women who had KHE with KMP treated in infancy and presented in adolescence with comorbidities related to their KHE tumor. Th

New insights and evolving role of pegylated liposomal doxorubicin in cancer therapy.

We herein review various pharmacological and clinical aspects of pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD), the first nanomedicine to be approved for cancer therapy, and discuss the gap between its potent antitumor activity in preclinical studies and its comparatively modest achievements in clinical studies and limited use in clinical practice. PLD is a complex formulation of doxorubicin based on pharmaceutical nanotechnology with unique pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. Its long circulation time with stable retention of the payload and its accumulation in tumors with high vascular p

Imaging findings of Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma in children.

PURPOSE: Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a rare, aggressive vascular tumor that typically occurs during infancy or early childhood. Though several case reports have discussed the imaging findings of KHE, larger comprehensive studies are lacking. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the imaging findings of KHE in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of twelve cases of pathologically proven KHE were collected by searching our institution's pathology database for children diagnosed between January 2004 and April 2016 (6 male, 6 female; median age: 3 months; age range 7days - 18

Multifocal Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma Causing Massive Fetal Chylous Ascites.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a locally aggressive vascular tumor that usually occurs in soft tissues of the extremity and rarely in the retroperitoneum. We report a unique case of isolated massive fetal ascites attributed to KHE, involving the retroperitoneum and multiple visceral organs, along with the Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon. We suspect that retroperitoneal KHE might have caused massive fetal ascites because of its high potential to invade the lymphatic vessels aggressively in the retroperitoneal space, which possibly permits intestinal lymph leakage into the peritoneal cavit

Age at cancer diagnosis for blacks compared with whites in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Younger ages at diagnosis for blacks compared with whites have been reported for several cancer types. However, the US black population is younger than the white population, which may bias age comparisons that do not account for the populations at risk. METHODS: We analyzed Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results data for non-Hispanic blacks and non-Hispanic whites from 18 regions for the year 2010. We calculated crude mean ages at diagnosis among cases of 29 cancer types for whites and blacks. Separately, we calculated adjusted means that corrected for differences in populati

A case of kaposiform hemangioendothelioma at the sigmoid colon.

We report a case of kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) occurring at the sigmoid colon in an 8-year-old male. He had experienced lower abdominal pain and fever for several days. Contrast-enhanced CT images revealed a well-enhanced mass involving several large and small cystic parts with thin, enhanced walls at the sigmoid colon. The diagnosis was made histopathologically after surgical resection; the cystic parts corresponded to dilated lymphatic vessels. KHE is a rare, locally aggressive, vascular tumor that usually occurs in the soft tissues of the extremities. However, a case occurring in

The role of Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus infection in the proliferation of human bladder cancer cells.

Existing evidence suggests a possible role of viruses in human bladder cancer development. Recently, Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) was reported to be the most frequently detected virus in bladder cancer tissue from Croatian patients on screening with the Lawrence Livermore Microbial Detection Array. In the current study, to investigate the functional roles of KSHV in bladder cancer, five bladder cancer cell lines were infected with KSHV and their tumour progression-associated changes investigated. Four KSHV-infected bladder cancer cell lines were established; two invasive blad

Expression of cancer stem cell markers and their correlation with pathogenesis in vascular tumors.

Vascular tumor, which belongs to a kind of complicated lesion in soft tissue tumor, is derived from mesenchymal tissue. Although many studies have been focused on the pathogenesis of vascular tumors in human, the specific mechanism of the vascular tumors was currently unclear. Previous studies have reported an association of cancer stem cells with the development of tumor in many solid tumors. Thus the purpose of this study was to explore whether different expression level of cancer stem cell markers including CD29, CD44, CD133, nestin and ALDH1 in vascular tumor may help to elucidate the poss

[Medical treatment of soft tissue sarcomas based on the histological subtype].

The medical treatment of adult soft tissue sarcomas is more and more dictated by the histological subtype, this applies to both cytotoxics and target therapies. Doxorubicin and ifosfamid are the two drugs used either in monotherapy or combination with the best established response rates in adult soft tissue sarcomas for several years. In addition to these compounds there is evidence of efficacy of new drugs such as taxanes in angiosarcoma, gemcitabine+taxanes combination in leiomyosarcomas, trabectedin in leiomyosarcomas and liposarcomas with an extremely high activity in myxoid liposarcoma. Split-thickness skin grafting in oncologic surgery of the limb--a case report.

Large excision of tumor soft tissues is often complicated by infections, seriously undermined blood supply and venous drainage, tendon exposure, functional impairment. We report the case of a 67 years old woman admitted for a sarcoma of the right forearm occurring 14 years after a modified radical mastectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy for carcinoma of the right breast. A wide excision of the lesion and split-thickness skin graft was performed with uneventful recovery and satisfactory healing of the graft tissue and functional aspect of the arm. In the last few decades, there has been a search f
