Disseminated Kaposi's sarcoma and HCV infection: only a casual relationship? A case report.

The authors present a case of disseminated Kaposi's sarcoma in a male patient, HIV negative and Hepatitis C virus (HCV) positive. Although it is well-known that in HCV positive patients the onset of cutaneous diseases such as porphyria cutanea tarda, mixed essential cryoglobulinemia, lichen planus, polyarteritis nodosa, itch/prurigo, is possible, papers on its association with disseminated Kaposi's sarcoma in HIV negative patients are rare in the literature. Such an association is probably not a matter of chance: in fact, the changes to the immune system induced by the HCV virus, in synergy wi

Kaposi's sarcoma: a presenting manifestation of HIV infection in an Indian.

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a multifocal neoplastic proliferation of endothelial cells predominantly involving skin and other organs. HIV-associated Kaposi's sarcoma has been rarely reported from India. A 38-year-old male presented with persistent swelling on the left lower limb for one year along with multiple erythematous to dusky papules and plaques of one and half months duration and swelling and black discoloration of right lower limb for one month. Cutaneous examination revealed numerous skin colored and erythematous papules and plaques distributed on the left lower limb on the anteromedial

Oral hobnail hemangioma: case report.

Hobnail hemangioma (HH) is a rare benign vascular neoplasm reported as a distinctive small benign, solitary vascular neoplasm of the superficial and mid-dermis occurring on the face, trunk, or extremities of young or middle-aged adults. The oral manifestations are quite uncommon, with only three cases reported in the English language literature. The following case refers to a 38-year-old woman with a small nodule on the hard palatal mucosa. Histological findings showed a biphasic growth pattern of irregularly dilated vascular structures in the superficial mucosa, lined by epithelioid endotheli

Clinical, histological and immunohistochemical findings in oral Kaposi's sarcoma in a series of Mexican AIDS patients. Comparative study.

BACKGROUND: The origin of spindle cells (SC) in oral Kaposi's sarcoma (OKS) is still an intriguing aspect. Thus the aim of the present study was to compare the clinical, histological and immunohistochemical characteristics of OKS and oral pyogenic granuloma (OPG), in order to contribute to the knowledge of the cells involved in Kaposi's sarcoma pathogenesis. METHODS: In this retrospective, observational and comparative study, 39 OKS and 30 OPG cases were included. Immunohistochemical studies were performed for vimentin, alpha SMA, desmin, C-kit, CD34, D2-40 and LANA-1 [human herpesvirus-8(HHV

Cancer risk in persons with HIV/AIDS in India: a review and future directions for research.

BACKGROUND: India has a large and evolving HIV epidemic. Little is known about cancer risk in Indian persons with HIV/AIDS (PHA) but risk is thought to be low. METHODS: To describe the state of knowledge about cancer patterns in Indian PHA, we reviewed reports from the international and Indian literature. RESULTS: As elsewhere, non-Hodgkin lymphomas dominate the profile of recognized cancers, with immunoblastic/large cell diffuse lymphoma being the most common type. Hodgkin lymphoma is proportionally increased, perhaps because survival with AIDS is truncated by fatal infections. In contrast,

Diseases associated with HIV infection: study of biopsies and surgical resection specimens at a large general hospital in Mexico City.

The objective of this study was to analyze the type of diseases associated with HIV infection from a survey of the surgical pathology material accessioned at a large general hospital in Mexico City. From the archives of the pathology unit of the General Hospital of Mexico (Ministry of Health), we compiled data on biopsies and surgical specimen from different organs and tissues of HIV-infected patients (HIV/AIDS) received in the period from January 2005 to July 2008. We found a total of 52 cases, 41 men and 11 women. The main affected anatomical organ was the lymphatic nodes in 33 cases (63.4%)

Reactive hyperplasias, precancerous and malignant lesions of the oral mucosa.

The oral cavity contains many organs and tissues compressed in a small area. Accordingly oral tumors have a wide variety of appearances. Reactive hyper-plastic lesions include epulis, morsicatio, traumatic ulcer or palatal hyperplasia. These benign lesions must be separated clinically and histologically from precancerous and neoplastic lesions. In leukoplakia, the individual risk can be estimated by clinical signs. Nevertheless histopathology is mandatory because precancerous lesions usually precede or accompany most oral cancers. Amalgam tattoo, oral nevi and melanoacanthoma have to be considered

Kaposi's sarcoma in a patient with AIDS.

We report a case of a 40 year old HIV infected male, citizen of Somalia who presented with multiple painful, livid reddish brown plaques, papules and nodules on both lower limbs and purplish red nodules on the hard palate. The cutaneous nodular lesions on biopsy showed characteristic features of Kaposi's sarcoma. This case is reported due to paucity of Kaposi's sarcoma in Indian literature.

Epidemiology of oral Kaposi's sarcoma in Zimbabwe 1988-1997: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest number of HIV/AIDS cases globally which contrasts with the lack of population-based studies of oral Kaposi's sarcoma (OKS); one of the clinical cardinal signs of HIV/AIDS. To date, no study has investigated the incidence of OKS in African populations affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. It is, therefore, the purpose of this study to assess the burden of OKS in the Zimbabwean population over a 10 year period. DESIGN: A descriptive epidemiological study was undertaken to assess the burden of OKS by determining the frequencies, incidence and cumulative

Human immunodeficiency virus-associated Kaposi sarcoma as an immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome: a literature review and case report.

BACKGROUND: Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is the most common human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated neoplasm (HIV-KS). Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) results in a decrease in the incidence and prevalence of HIV-KS as well as in clinical improvement. However, in a subset of subjects who are HIV seropositive, KS may recrudesce early following the introduction of HAART as an immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS). METHODS: The management of a patient who is HIV seropositive with rapid clinical worsening of oral KS lesions shortly after the initiation of HAART was documente

Salivary human herpesvirus 8 shedding in renal allograft recipients with Kaposi's sarcoma.

Renal allograft recipients in the Middle East are at high risk of developing Kaposi's sarcoma. This report describes the extent of oral human herpesvirus 8 shedding and the genomic diversity of the virus in five Saudi Arabian kidney transplantation patients in whom Kaposi's sarcoma had developed. PCR protocols were applied to amplify three fragments of the viral genome from whole-mouth saliva, parotid saliva, buccal and palatal exfoliates, plasma, peripheral blood leukocytes and biopsy of the Kaposi's sarcoma lesion, and to quantify the viral load in whole-mouth saliva. Viral DNA was detected

Classic Kaposi's sarcoma presenting in the oral cavity of two HIV-negative Quechua patients.

Traditionally, classic KS lesions have a general distribution, often involving the skin of the feet and legs, and to a lesser extent, that of the hands, arms, and trunk. Oral involvement is a rare manifestation. Initial oral involvement is an even rarer occurrence. We report two unusual cases of classic KS presenting in the oral cavity of two patients from indigenous origin; the first patient with primary oral KS lesion on the hard palate, with no other signs of the condition in any other region of the body; the second patient with generalized dermal KS lesions with lymph node and lower lip in

HIV-associated oral Kaposi sarcoma and HHV-8: a review.

Kaposi sarcoma is the most common malignant tumour associated with HIV infection. In the majority of cases oral tissues are involved and in 22% the initial presentation is in the oral cavity. The oral lesions are either single or multifocal, and the palate, gingiva and tongue are the sites most frequently involved. The pathogenesis of Kaposi sarcoma in HIV-seropositive subjects is complex. It involves interaction between human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) and HIV, altered cellular signal transduction pathways, and increased production of cytokines and growth factors. The multifactorial nature and cli

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome related Kaposi's sarcoma eroding the maxillary bone.

BACKGROUND: Oral involvement is a common manifestation of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome related Kaposi's sarcoma, and it occurs in approximately one-third of afflicted patients. METHODS: We report an unusual case of Kaposi's sarcoma of the hard palate which invaded the underlying maxillary bone. RESULTS: The patient underwent excisional biopsy and was subsequently treated with localised radiation and systemic chemotherapy including liposomal doxorubicin. CONCLUSIONS: The presentation, differential diagnosis, radiographic appearance and management of this serious complication are discus

Correlation of CD4 counts and CD4/CD8 ratio with HIV-infection associated oral manifestations.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between oral lesions arising from HIV infection and CD4/CD8 cell ratios is of relevance in clinical assessment of immune suppression. OBJECTIVE: To correlate the prevalence of oral manifestations arising from HIV infection and the levels of CD4/CD8 cell ratios. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. SETTING: Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya. SUBJECTS: Two hundred and seven HIV-infected patients in medical wards were recruited in the study. RESULTS: Seventy eight (37.7%) were male and 129 (62.3%) female, with an age range of 18-73 years (mean=34.81 years).
