The burden of oral malignancies in Zimbabwe 1988 to 1997: a population based study.

OBJECTIVE: Annual reports from the few cancer registries in Africa are the only reliable assessment of the burden of cancer using population-based data. Similar reports for oral malignancies have not been undertaken. The purpose of this study was to assess the burden of oral malignancies in Zimbabwe over a 10 year period using population-based data. DESIGN: A descriptive epidemiological study was undertaken to assess the burden of oral malignancies by determining the frequencies, incidence and cumulative rates, the lifetime risk and chances of developing an oral malignancy according to site (

Gingival involvement in a case series of patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome-related Kaposi sarcoma.

BACKGROUND: This case series presents the polymorphic clinical characteristics of gingival acquired immunodeficieny syndrome (AIDS)-related Kaposi sarcoma (KS), a malignancy that is gradually becoming uncommon in developed nations. An up-to-date overview of the related epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, histopathology, and treatment is provided, along with a pictorial guide to ease clinical diagnosis. METHODS: The oral/maxillofacial pathology records at Aristotle University and the University of Geneva were retrospectively reviewed. Thirty-two cases diagnosed with oral AIDS-related KS were retri

Regression of Kaposi's sarcoma in renal graft recipients after conversion to sirolimus treatment.

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a rare complication of renal transplantation in Poland (in our center 2 of 1000 patients). Neovascularization (typical for KS) is promoted by KS-related vascular endothelial growth factor (t-r-VEGF). Sirolimus may reduce t-r-VEGF synthesis and inhibit PI3K-p70S6 kinase of endothelial cells. Two men, 58 and 51 years old, were transplanted in 2002. Initial immunosuppression consisted of cyclosporine, azathioprine, and prednisone. In the second patient, at the week 8 the immunosuppression was switched to tacrolimus and mycophenolate mophetil. KS symptoms appeared on hard

No pharmacokinetic drug-drug interaction between nevirapine and paclitaxel.

We have investigated the pharmacokinetics of nevirapine and paclitaxel in a patient who used both drugs concomitantly, as there are strong theoretical indications for a potential pharmacokinetic drug-drug interaction. Plasma concentrations of nevirapine (dose: 200 mg twice daily orally) and paclitaxel (dose: 100 mg/m(2) 3-h i.v. infusion) were determined in a HIV-1-infected patient with Kaposi's sarcoma. Since both drugs are metabolized via the same cytochrome P450 isoenzymes, investigation of a drug-drug interaction was considered important. We found that the plasma concentrations of nevirapi

Oral malignant neoplasia: a survey of 428 cases in two Zimbabwean hospitals.

A review of oral malignant neoplasms biopsies accessioned in the pathology services of Harare Central Hospital and Parirenyatwa Hospital, Harare, Zimbabwe, during the 10year period January 1982 to December 1991 was carried out. Clinical records of 428 patients with histologically diagnosed oral malignant neoplasms by ICD-O type and site (COO.O-CO6.9) were retrieved and analyzed for gender, age, history of tobacco and alcohol usage, neoplastic type and histologic differentiation of squamous cell carcinoma (8000/3). Oral malignant neoplasms constituted 24.8% (n = 428) of the 1723 biopsies access

Clinical and bronchoscopic findings in Ugandans with pulmonary Kaposi's sarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary Kaposi's sarcoma (PKS) directly affects the life expectancy of those infected and yet the clinical and radiographic features of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) with pulmonary involvement are nonspecific, which makes diagnosis difficult. In Uganda, pulmonary tuberculosis, which has clinical features that closely resemble those of PKS, also occurs commonly and thus confusion is bound to arise. Bronchoscopy is a recognized diagnostic investigatory modality for PKS. The aim of present study was to identify unique or useful points for the differential diagnosis of PKS and other opportun

Aggressive behavior of classical Kaposi's sarcoma and coexistence with angiosarcoma.

UNLABELLED: An 82-year-old Caucasian man presented with initially asymptomatic livid red plaques on the plantar surface of the feet that become confluent and evolved into invasively growing nodules accompanied by massive edema. Histology allowed a diagnosis of the classical form of Kaposi's sarcoma; the serology test result for HIV was negative, whereas the associated human herpes virus type 8 was detected by polymerase chain reaction on the skin sample. Over the subsequent 6 months, skin lesions become vegetative and partially necrotic, and extended to the hands and eyelids. Chemotherapy with

[Clinical manifestations and endoscopic characteristics of Kaposi's sarcoma in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome].

BACKGROUND: Kaposi sarcoma may be the initial manifestation of immunodeficiency acquired syndrome (AIDS )in 30% of patients. The digestive tract is the thirth most affected site after the skin and lymph nodes. OBJECTIVE: To correlate the clinic and endoscopic manifestations of patients with AIDS. METHOD: 12 consecutive cases with AIDS and Kaposi sarcoma. We analyzed clinical data, positivity , immune state (leucocytes, lymphocytes, viral load, CD4 and CD8 counts, CD4/CD8 relation), opportunistic infections, tumors, endoscopic characteristics of the associated tumors, and histologic results.

Oral Kaposi's sarcoma in a renal transplant patient: case report and literature review.

Malignancies, including oral Kaposi's sarcoma, may develop in transplant patients as a result of immunosuppressive therapy. Both the prevalence and the incidence of these malignancies vary. This article describes a renal transplant patient who was receiving immunosuppressive therapy and presented with oral Kaposi's sarcoma. The lesion was excised and did not recur. However, the patient died as a result of viral pneumonitis, secondary to her renal problems. The article also includes a review of the literature, with particular emphasis on oral presentation of immunosuppression-related malignanci

[The case of a great pharyngeal tonsil hypertrophy in a twenty-one-year-old patient infected with HIV virus].

Seropositive patients quite often demonstrate symptoms in the area of the head and neck, among which should be mentioned opportunistic infections, neoplasms--Kaposi's sarcoma, as well as progressive generalized lymphadenopathy. These patients quite often complain about difficulties in breathing through the nose as well as of recrudescent auricular inflammation. The authors present descriptions of a great pharyngeal and palatal tonsillar hypertrophy in a twenty-one-year-old patient infected with HIV virus.

Human papillomavirus, type 40-associated papilloma, and concurrent Kaposi's sarcoma involving the anterior hard palate of an HIV-positive man.

A number of oral lesions have been reported in association with HIV, including lesions caused by other viruses such as the epitheliotropic human papillomavirus (HPV). More than 90 types of HPV have been identified, with the less commonly encountered strains of HPV tending to show association with immunodeficiency states. In addition, HIV-infected patients may have Kaposi's sarcoma develop, a malignancy thought to be caused by human herpes virus, type 8. Recent evidence suggests a sexual mode of transmission for this virus. We report an HIV-positive man with a large, HPV type 40-associated papi

Oral manifestations in HIV infection: fungal and bacterial infections, Kaposi's sarcoma.

Oral candidiasis (OC) is a frequent oral manifestation of HIV infection, is a marker disease and occurs as a pseudomembranous, erythematous or rarely hyperplastic variant; angular cheilitis is also seen. Candida albicans is frequently isolated but other species such as C. krusei and C. dublienensis are emerging. Resistance against fluconazole is common. Bacterial oral infections are comparatively rare and are predominantly localized to the gingiva and periodontium. Linear gingival erythema, necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis and necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis have been described in HIV-in

Oral Kaposi's sarcoma: a clinicopathologic study from South Africa.

OBJECTIVES: In this retrospective study, we defined the clinicopathologic characteristics of oral Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) and determined the presence of human herpesvirus 8 in the oral lesions in a group of South African patients. These results were compared with similar data from patients in developed countries. STUDY DESIGN: Eighty-one cases of oral KS were retrieved from the departmental archives. Fourteen patients with oral pyogenic granuloma served as control subjects. DNA was extracted by using a modified phenol chloroform extraction method and amplified by using polymerase chain reaction

Viral infections in the mouth.

Oral hairy leukoplakia (OHL) and Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) are commonly encountered in the HIV-infected patient. A unique feature of OHL is non-cytolytic high level of replication of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in the glossal epithelium. The expression of viral-encoded anti-apoptotic proteins concomitant to replicative proteins probably underlies this phenomenon. The question of whether OHL arises from activation of EBV latent in the tongue, or from superinfection by endogenous EBV shed via nonglossal sites or by exogenous EBV remains unresolved. Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8) is now seen as necessary bu

Oral cavity and pharynx cancer incidence rates in the United States, 1975-1998.

To identify subgroups of oral cavity and pharynx (OCP) cancers that may be etiologically distinct, we evaluated age-adjusted incidence rates by histologic type, anatomical site, race, and sex using cases diagnosed during 1975-1998 in nine US Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program registries. Male/female rate ratios were about one for adenocarcinoma (AC), three or more for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and undetermined for Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). Among males, black/white rate ratios exceeded two for cancers of the palate, tonsil, oropharynx, and pyriform sinus, and were less

A case series of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome patients with initial neoplastic diagnoses of intraoral Kaposi's sarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Oral Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) may represent the initial clinical manifestation of immunosuppression in human immunodeficiency virus disease. This article reviews the treatment provided to these patients and the outcome of the disease and provides the opportunity to assess the impact of improvements in the medical therapy of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome on disease outcome. METHODS: A tumor registry was examined to identify patients in whom oral KS was the first neoplastic diagnosis. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Thirty-seven cases of oral KS representing 1.9% of all cases of KS were

Oral Kaposi's sarcoma in a non-AIDS patient.

Kaposi's sarcoma involving the oral cavity is seen frequently in AIDS patients but rarely in transplant patients. When the oral cavity is involved in transplant patients, it usually is located on the palate or the oropharynx. This article reports a renal transplant patient who developed Kaposi's sarcoma which mimicked a gingival hyperplasia in the oral cavity.

Histological and epidemiological profile of oral cancer in Congo (Zaire).

From the files of the Department of Pathology at Kinshasa University Hospital, D.R. Congo, we have studied the histological and epidemiological profile of oral cancer in Congo. The relative frequency of oral cancer in Congo is 2.1%. The palate is the most common site (28.8%) and the squamous cell carcinoma the most frequent histological type (57.6%). People between 50 and 59 years old (27%) (Means: 48.39 +/- 15.43 years) and females (M/F = 0.47/1 are more affected).

Kaposi's sarcoma in women: A clinicopathologic study.

BACKGROUND: Although all epidemiologic subsets of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) (i.e., sporadic, endemic, epidemic, and iatrogenic) have an association with human herpes virus 8 (HHV8), these subsets occur in patient populations with distinctive clinical features. To a variable degree men outnumber women in all subsets. OBJECTIVE: A retrospective study of women with histologically proven cutaneous KS was undertaken to determine the clinical and histopathologic features, as well as any associations. METHODS: Two hundred and fifty cases of cutaneous KS in women from 1975 to 1993 were reviewed. RESULT
