Disseminated Kaposi's sarcoma in a patient with acquired ichthyosis.

An elderly black male with Kaposi's sarcoma of the skin and lymph nodes is presented. The patient developed several violaceous papules involving the nose, which suggested a diagnosis of sarcoidosis clinically but proved to be Kaposi's sarcoma on biopsy. His clinical course was complicated by the development of acquired ichthyosis. The prognosis and treatment of generalized Kaposi's sarcoma is discussed.

Lymphadenopathic and oropharyngeal Kaposi's sarcoma in a drug addict with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Immunological abnormalities in peripheral blood and lymphoid tissue.

Lymphocyte subsets were analyzed in peripheral blood and lymph nodes from a drug-addict with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) presenting with disseminated lymphadenopathic and oropharyngeal Kaposi's sarcoma. At the onset of disease, hypergammaglobulinemia, increase of OKT8+ T cell subset and reversal of OKT4/OKT8 ratio were found in the blood. At the same time, lymph nodes displayed, besides Kaposi's sarcoma, marked follicular hyperplasia, plasmocytosis and increase of OKT8+/Leu 2a+ T cells within follicular centers. These results are interpreted to indicate that at an early stage of

Kaposi's sarcoma and malignant lymphoma in AIDS.

A 48-year-old homosexual with contacts in different countries, including Haiti, presented with multiple pigmented or bluish nodules on both lower legs and upper arms. He had a history of secondary syphilis, hepatitis B and herpes zoster ophthalmicus. Biopsies of the skin tumors revealed a typical Kaposi's sarcoma of low grade malignancy. The endothelial origin of the tumor was indicated by the presence of specific endothelial organelles (Weibel-Palade bodies) in the cytoplasma of the tumor cells. Erythrocyte phagocytosis was found in tumor cells within and without the vascular channels. Labora

Acquired immune deficiency syndrome: postmortem findings.

The autopsies of 13 male homosexuals with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) were reviewed. All patients had laboratory evidence of cellular immune dysfunction. The most common diagnoses made were disseminated cytomegalovirus infection in 12 patients and Kaposi's sarcoma in 10. All patients infected with cytomegalovirus had pulmonary compromise. The adrenal glands and gastrointestinal tract also were involved often by cytomegalovirus. Cytomegalovirus infection of organs uncommonly affected such as heart, meninges, cerebrum, and peripheral nerves was documented in two patients. Skin mos

Coexistence of Castleman's disease and Kaposi's sarcoma. Report of a case and a speculation.

A case report of multicentric Castleman's disease associated with Kaposi's sarcoma is presented. Histologic examinations of cutaneous lesions and of an axillary lymph node were made. The cutaneous lesions showed Kaposi's sarcoma and a lymph node revealed Castleman's disease and foci of spindle cells characteristic of Kaposi's sarcoma. The association of Castleman's disease and Kaposi's sarcoma appears too frequently to be due to chance alone. We speculate that these two entities may reflect different tissue reactions to the same causative agent.

Primary lymph nodal Kaposi's sarcoma of the parotid gland.

Two cases of Kaposi's sarcoma arising within intraparotid lymph nodes are presented. The tumor masses, clinically thought to be primary epithelial tumors of the parotid gland, were pathologically defined as Kaposi's sarcoma. No other evidence of this disease has been found elsewhere in either of the two patients studied. Immunologic studies performed in both patients demonstrated a depression of T-lymphocyte function and altered cell-mediated immunity in one. Search of the medical literature shows that these are the first two reported cases of Kaposi's sarcoma arising within lymph nodes of sal

Kaposi's sarcoma in lymph nodes concurrent with Hodgkin's disease.

The coexistence of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) and Hodgkin's disease (HD) in the same lymph node is illustrated. The case concerns an 82-year-old Italian woman with a classic cutaneous KS who developed multiple lymphadenopathies. Involvement of a single node by KS and HD in the manner of a collision tumor was found unexpectedly. This very unusual finding might be regarded as more than coincidental because of the relatively frequent concurrence of diseases.

T-lymphocyte subsets in lymph nodes from homosexual men.

To evaluate further the immunodeficiency of homosexual men, blood and lymph node specimens were obtained from five homosexual men with lymphadenopathy and from seven homosexual men with Kaposi's sarcoma. Monoclonal antibodies were used to identify T-lymphocyte subsets in blood by cytofluorometry and in frozen sections of nodes by immunoperoxidase techniques. The homosexuals with Kaposi's sarcoma had a T-helper/suppressor ratio in blood of 0.7; the homosexuals with lymphadenopathy had a ratio of 0.6, compared with controls of 2.1. Control lymphoid tissue had a ratio of 3.0 in the interfollicula

Kaposi's sarcoma in a young homosexual man. Association with angiofollicular lymphoid hyperplasia and a malignant lymphoproliferative disorder.

Recent reports have described an unexpected number of cases of a virulent form of a Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) as well as acquired immunodeficiency in young homosexual men. A 31-year-old man initially had a benign disorder, angiofollicular lymphoid hyperplasia. Kaposi's sarcoma then developed, and he died of a malignant lymphoproliferative disorder. We believe that this is unique among the recently described cases of KS in homosexual men because of the occurrence of this second malignancy. It may be that similar cases will be recognized in this population.

[Kaposi's disease. Form with lymph node manifestation in a young African. Difficulty in the initial diagnosis and relation to dysimmune lymphadenitis].

The authors report a case of Kaposi's sarcoma in a 38-year-old Malian. Onset occurred one year after an episode of febrile polyadenopathy with histologic features suggestive of immune dysfunction lymphadenitis. Diagnosis of Kaposi's sarcoma was firmly established only following occurrence of secondary skin lesions. This case exemplifies the diagnostic problems raised by those forms of Kaposi's sarcoma which present as lymph node involvement. In the index case, the authors discuss the significance of the initial polyadenopathy, and speculate whether it was an initial stage of Kaposi's sarcoma o

Outbreak of Kaposi's sarcoma with cytomegalovirus infection in young homosexual men.

Kaposi's sarcoma, a multicentric malignant neoplasm, occurs in certain geographic areas in the world. It is most common in Equatorial Africa and Eastern Europe. The annual incidence of Kaposi's sarcoma in the United States is between 0.021 and 0.061 per 100,000 persons. The appearance of an outbreak of Kaposi's sarcoma in young homosexual men in New York and California is a new and unique phenomenon. Certain differences are already recognized between the disease in these young men and the ordinary Kaposi's sarcoma. Herein we report our observations of the first 10 cases of Kaposi's sarcoma in

Kaposi's sarcoma in childhood. A report of 3 cases.

Three cases of Kaposi's sarcoma in Black children aged under 4 years are described. In all cases the diagnosis was made on lymph node biopsy. The difference in presentation of Kaposi's sarcoma in childhood and adulthood is discussed and attention is drawn to the frequency of lymph node involvement in children. Response to combination chemotherapy is encouraging and the potential for long-term survival appears to be good.

Disseminated Kaposi's sarcoma in homosexual men.

Nineteen cases from an epidemic of disseminated Kaposi's sarcoma in homosexual men were studied by clinical, virologic, immunologic, and genetic methods. The patients were all male homosexuals ranging in age from 29 to 52 years, with histories of multiple sexually transmitted diseases and exposure to both prescription and recreational drugs. Sites of disease included skin (16 of 19 patients), lymph nodes (13 patients), gastrointestinal tract (12 patients), spleen (three patients), and lung (one patient). Most patients had elevated levels of serum immunoglobins, positive antibody titers to hepa

Primary Kaposi's sarcoma and Hodgkin's disease in the same lymph node.

The occurrence of primary Kaposi's sarcoma in a lymph node affected by Hodgkin's disease is reported. The case concerns a 43-year-old woman with a recurrence of Hodgkin's disease 13 years after its initial diagnosis. In one of four excised supraclavicular nodes a Kaposi's sarcoma was unexpectedly found. The present observation stresses once more that the two diseases are closely related and possibly share the same pathogenesis.

Disseminated Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare infection in homosexual men dying of acquired immunodeficiency.

Five homosexual men dying at UCLA Center for the Health Sciences, Los Angeles, with acquired immunodeficiency and Pneumocystis pneumonia, Kaposi's sarcoma, or cryptosporidiosis since May 1981 have all had mycobacteria of the Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex cultured from tissues taken just before death or at postmortem examination. Each man had histological evidence of disseminated mycobacterial infection. Acid-fast organisms were seen in macrophages in the lung, spleen, and lymph nodes in all cases and in a variety of additional organs in two cases. Other severe infections were alwa

Kaposi's sarcoma: clinical features, experience in Uganda.

In Uganda, Kaposi's sarcoma is predominantly a disease of the male African with a male:female ratio of 13:1. It is a multifocal disease and all parts of the body may be involved. When confined to the skin in the form of nodular tumour, it runs a slow 'benign' course. The florid, the visceral and bone lesions in adults and lymphadenopathy in children are malignant lesions. The three histological types are useful in determining prognosis and choosing drugs for treatment. A change from benign to malignant forms is associated with loss of cellular immunological status of the host.

Lymphadenopathy associated with dysgammaglobulinemia.

Conditions in which lymphadenopathy is associated with dysgammaglobulinemia may be divided into two groups: those in which etiologic factors and pathogenesis are well established, and those which are still a medical dilemma. Only a few belong to the former group: infections, immunizations, and drug-induced conditions being the best examples. Unfortunately, the great majority belong to the latter group. Interestingly enough, many conditions with lymphadenopathy and dysgammaglobulinemia share similar histologic features, such as infiltration with lymphocytes, immunoblasts, plasma cells, and hist
