Kaposi sarcoma (KS) represents a neoplastic proliferation primarily affecting endothelial cells, characterized by the development of cutaneous lesions. However, its pathogenesis can extend beyond the skin, involving internal organs, lymph nodes, and mucous membranes. KS is associated with human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) and is often prevalent in immunocompromised patients, especially those with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and/or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). We present a case of a 29-year-old African American male who came into the emergency department (ED) with overall discomf

Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is an angioproliferative neoplasm that affects the skin and lymph nodes. Human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) triggers KS by infecting the endothelium and inducing angiogenesis through the production of vascular endothelial growth factors and cytokines. KS is characterized by purplish or hyperpigmented plaques involving the skin and mucous membranes, and visceral involvement is very rare. Pulmonary KS (PKS) is an exceedingly rare visceral manifestation of KS and has a poor prognosis. PKS often presents with cough, hemoptysis, pleuritic chest pain, fever, and weight loss. In this cas

We present a patient who was previously diagnosed with HIV and had multiple violaceous skin lesions at the time of his diagnosis. Following the initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART), the number of lesions increased significantly and he developed shortness of breath, which prompted hospital admission for further workup. Biopsy of the skin lesions confirmed the diagnosis of Kaposi sarcoma (KS). Bronchoscopy with biopsy revealed KS lesions in his respiratory system. Imaging and biopsy confirmed KS invasion of lymph nodes. Due to widespread KS, he was diagnosed with immune reconstitution infl

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is an Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)-defining illness, with cutaneous KS being a more common presentation. Visceral involvement, particularly in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, without cutaneous involvement, is rare. Consisting of generally non-specific symptoms, GI-KS can have potentially fatal outcomes, including hemorrhage or perforation, making prompt diagnosis and treatment imperative. Our case describes a 31-year-old male with AIDS who presented with a neck mass and purulent, bloody rectal drainage. The neck mass was biopsied and identified as caseated

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a disease that is not widely known among the general public, but has a high prevalence among organ transplant recipients. Here, we present a rare case of intragraft KS after kidney transplantation. A 53-year-old woman who had been on hemodialysis due to diabetic nephropathy underwent deceased-donor kidney transplantation on December 7, 2021. Approximately 10 weeks after kidney transplantation, her creatinine level increased to 2.99 mg/dL. Upon examination, ureter kinking was confirmed between the ureter orifices and the transplanted kidney. As a result, percutaneous ne

Mycobacterial spindle cell pseudotumor (MSP) is a rare proliferation of spindle-shaped histiocytes that occurs most frequently in lymph nodes but has also been documented in the skin, soft tissue, abdomen, and other sites. These lesions contain acid-fast mycobacteria, most commonly Mycobacterium avium complex. Fewer than 10 cases of cutaneous MSPs have been published, and most have occurred in immunocompromised patients, either due to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection or immunosuppressive medications. The differential diagnosis includes Kaposi's sarcoma and other spindle cell neopla

INTRODUCTION: Metastasis of sarcomas to lymph nodes is an uncommon event in its natural history. We aimed to present our experience with fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of metastatic sarcomas to lymph nodes over a 10-year period.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The cytopathology archives were searched for FNA of lymph nodes involved by metastatic sarcomas. Available clinicopathologic data were recorded. All slides were retrieved and reviewed.
RESULTS: Thirty-three lymph nodes, from 30 patients, with metastatic soft tissue sarcomas were identified. The lymph node metastases occurred in 16 males and 14 fem

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a vascular / mesenchymal tumor with an indefinite degree of malignancy, caused by complex etiopathogenetic factors including Human Herpes Virus-8 infection of immunocompromised patients. For example, KS is more common in adult men with HIV. We describe 2 very rare cases of iatrogenic KS in children after hematopoietic stem cell transplant with isolated organ damage (case 1: lung; case 2: inguinal lymph node). KS is a potential complication of bone marrow transplant in pediatric patients and can occur in different age groups and at atypical sites.

BACKGROUND: The 'Focused assessment with sonography for HIV-associated tuberculosis' (FASH) protocol has been applied and researched for over a decade in HIV-infected patients with suspected extra-pulmonary tuberculosis. Interpretation of target FASH features may be challenging as they can also indicate alternative opportunistic diseases.
OBJECTIVES: The primary aim of the review was summarizing the accumulated evidence on the diagnostic accuracy of the FASH protocol including description of diagnoses of target FASH features.
SOURCES: Literature was searched using PubMed, Google Scholar, and

Kaposi sarcoma (KS), a multifocal vascular neoplasm frequently observed in HIV-positive individuals, primarily affects the skin, mucous membranes, visceral organs, and lymph nodes. KS is associated primarily with Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) infection. In this case report, we present a rare occurrence of co-infection and co-localization of KSHV and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in KS arising from the conjunctiva, which, to our knowledge, has not been reported previously. Immunohistochemistry (IHC), DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and EBV-encoded RNA in situ hybridization (EBER-

Oral Kaposi Sarcoma (OKS) commonly occurs in patients with AIDS. The incidence of Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is greatly increased in renal transplant recipients compared with the general population, with particular prevalence in certain ethnic groups where it can occur in up to 5% of transplant recipients. From them, only 2% can manifest first with OKS.A man in his early 40s, 2 years after kidney transplantation, presented with a reddish-purple hypertrophic ulcerated lesion at the base of the tongue. Cervical ultrasonography revealed enlarged lymph nodes, and pathological examination of biopsies reve

BACKGROUND: Focused Assessment with Sonography for HIV-associated TB (FASH) is a diagnostic tool for extra-pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) in symptomatic patients with advanced HIV. As Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is also prevalent in this patient population, changes due to KS may mimic TB findings and clinical interpretation of target FASH findings can be challenging. We aimed to describe sonographic findings in patients with KS.
METHODS: We performed a prospective observational study at Lighthouse clinic at Kamuzu Central Hospital, Lilongwe, Malawi, in consecutive patients with newly diagnosed KS, wit

BACKGROUND: Positron emission tomography/computed tomography with fluorodeoxyglucose (F-18) (FDG PET/CT) is increasingly used in Kaposi sarcoma (KS), but its value has not been assessed.
OBJECTIVES: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of FDG PET/CT to define the extent of disease in KS.
METHODS: Consecutive patients with KS referred to our department for FDG PET/CT were included. The diagnostic accuracy of FDG PET/CT for cutaneous and extra-cutaneous KS staging was assessed on a per lesion basis compared to staging obtained from clinical examination, standard imaging,

Kaposi's sarcoma is a rare disease with four known variants: classic, epidemic, endemic and iatrogenic (transplant-related), all caused by an oncogenic virus named Human Herpes Virus 8. The viral infection in itself, along with the oncogenic properties of HHV8 and with immune system dysfunction, forms the grounds on which Kaposi's Sarcoma may develop. Infection with HHV8 occurs through saliva via close contacts, blood, blood products, solid organ donation and, rarely, vertical transmission. Chronic inflammation and oncogenesis are promoted by a mix of viral genes that directly promote cell sur

Multicentric Castleman disease (MCD) is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder typically manifesting with bulky lymphadenopathy in multiple lymph node stations. We describe an atypical presentation of human herpes virus 8 (HHV8)-associated MCD in a middle-aged man with no significant medical history who presented with 1 month of systemic symptoms. He was found to be HIV-1 positive. A physical examination did not reveal palpable lymphadenopathy. A contrast-enhanced CT scan was notable for hepatosplenomegaly and mildly enlarged scattered lymph nodes in the abdomen and pelvis. A positron emission to

BACKGROUND: Kaposi sarcoma and post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder have been occasionally reported in post-liver transplant patients. However, the simultaneous occurrence of these two diseases in the same lymph nodes is very rare.
CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of a 19-mo-old boy, who presented with intermittent fever and enlarged cervical lymph nodes after liver transplantation. Six cervical lymph nodes were biopsied, and the histopathological examinations revealed multifocal hyperplasia of spindle cells around small blood vessels, extravasated erythrocytes, and heavy infiltration

Kaposi sarcoma is a malignancy common in patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is a proliferative soft-tissue tumor commonly manifesting as pigmented papules and nodules on the skin. Lesions can also appear on the mucosal lining of the oropharynx and other parts of the body such as the lymph nodes. Head and neck involvement in Kaposi sarcoma is not unusual; however, laryngeal involvement is not commonly seen. We report the case of a 31-year-old gentleman, a former smoker with AIDS, who developed a mass in the throat with progressive hoarseness of voice without stridor. A

AIM OF THE STUDY: Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a low-grade angioproliferative tumor arising from endothelial cells and associated with Human Herpes Virus 8 infection. Although there are considerable number of patients referred for surgical excision, the plastic surgery literature on KS is exceptionally scarce. In this study, it was aimed to emphasize the differences in the management of Kaposi's Sarcoma and help to understand the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, accordingly the sake of choosing the ideal treatment method for each lesion.

BACKGROUND: Although the treatment of iatrogenic and HIV-related Kaposi sarcoma is well defined and mostly based on restoring immune function, the treatment of classic and endemic Kaposi sarcoma is less well established. Chemotherapy or interferon α is used for patients with extensive cutaneous or visceral Kaposi sarcoma, but tolerance might be poor and long-term remission is rare. We aimed to evaluate the activity of pembrolizumab in classic and endemic Kaposi sarcoma with cutaneous extension requiring systemic treatment.

Castleman disease (CD) is an unusual lymphoproliferative disorder characterized by multiple lymphadenopathy accompanied by marked systemic inflammatory symptoms. CD can be unicentric (UCD) or multicentric (MCD), and it can be classified into three types based on histopathology: hyaline vascular type, plasma cell type, and mixed hyaline vascular and plasma cell type. CD involving skin is an unusual clinical manifestation. Abnormalities including rash, hyperpigmentation, cherry hemangiomatosis, paraneoplastic pemphigus, and Kaposi sarcoma have been reported to occur in MCD. Here, we reported an
