Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) encodes the constitutively active chemokine receptor ORF74, a key factor in viral pathogenesis. Murine γ-herpesvirus 68 (MHV68) acts as an in vivo model for KSHV biology, but the ligand-binding and signaling functions of its ORF74 homolog are not fully understood. To address this knowledge gap, we studied interactions between MHV68-ORF74 and human and murine chemokines through binding assays and signaling tests. Additionally, we assessed the cytotoxicity of human chemokine-based fusion toxin proteins (FTPs) targeting ORF74. We found that MHV68-ORF74

Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a locally aggressive endothelial tumor that can be classified into four clinical types: classic, AIDS-related, iatrogenic, and endemic. KS usually affects the skin and soft tissues, but it can develop into mucosal, lymph node, and multiple-organ lesions. KS is caused by Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpes virus (KSHV), which has six genotypes (A, B, C, D, E, and F). However, it remains unclear whether the KSHV genotype affects clinical presentation. In this study, we investigated clinical stage, cellular proliferation, NF-κB activity, and lymphocyte infiltration around the

Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is an angioproliferative neoplasm that develops as a result of infection with human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8). The disease most commonly appears as painless, nonpruritic, violaceous papules, plaques, or nodules on the skin, but it can also affect lymph nodes, mucosal surfaces, and internal organs. A 53-year-old man from Guinea-Bissau with membranous nephropathy who was being treated with prednisolone and cyclophosphamide presented with abdominal pain, early satiety, anorexia, and fever. His symptoms emerged while he was taking antibiotics for a recent respiratory tract infectio

Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-defining malignancy that can involve the skin, lymph nodes, and visceral organs in patients with advanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We report the case of a 35-year-old man with no known prior medical history who presented to the charity care clinic complaining of recurrent thrush and two weeks of progressive right lower extremity swelling. His physical examination revealed painful, pruritic violaceous papules and plaques over the proximal right thigh that had been present for one week. He was referred to the emergenc

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is an angiogenic tumor frequently seen in HIV-infected patients that involves skin, mucosa, and splanchnic organs. Here, we describe the case of a 57-year-old man with a history of HIV/AIDS on antiretroviral therapy (ART) who presented with KS of the lower extremity. The patient exhibited multiple exophytic lesions circumferentially involving his left leg, causing discomfort and difficulty in activities of daily living. External beam radiation therapy (EBRT) was pursued in lieu of amputation in order to achieve locoregional control while preserving ambulatory function. Due

Organ transplantation significantly enhances the survival and quality of life for recipients. However, multiple dependent and independent variables can adversely affect life expectancy after transplantation. Cancer is one of the most common causes of morbidity and mortality for long-term organ transplant recipients. The incidence of cancer in transplanted tissues can be twice as high in approximately 32 distinct cancer types. Oncogenic viruses present in graft tissues may contribute to the etiology of various cancers in transplant recipients. Such oncogenic viruses include hepatitis viruses, p

INTRODUCTION: Kaposi sarcoma is a vascular tumour associated with human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) infection. Due to immunosuppressive treatment, solid organ transplant recipients infected with HHV-8 have increased risk of Kaposi sarcoma. The risk of being infected with HHV-8 is associated with higher age, male sex, non-White ethnicity, being a man who has sex with men (MSM) and use of recreational drugs. Post-transplant Kaposi sarcoma is rare in HHV-8 low-prevalence areas. We report the first case of a liver transplant recipient developing Kaposi sarcoma following donor-transmitted HHV-8 infection

Kaposi sarcoma is a tumor commonly associated with human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) infection and is more prevalent in individuals with immunosuppression, such as those with HIV/AIDS, organ transplant recipients, or other conditions causing immune dysfunction. It typically presents as purple patches or nodules commonly affecting the skin or mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract, and can spread to the lymph nodes and lungs. This case report describes an 18-year-old male with vertical HIV infection, managed on a regimen of dolutegravir/lamivudine/tenofovir (DTG/3TC/TDF), and with a recent CD4

A 49-year-old man with a history of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, in a state of advanced immunosuppression and current antiretroviral therapy initiation. He was admitted to the hematology department after diagnosis of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), disseminated cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and cutaneous Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). During admission, he presented an episode of melena with anemization, so an urgent gastroscopy was performed. In the stomach there were multiple erythematous lesions, large and elevated, suggestive of sub

Background and Clinical Significance: Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a rare angio-proliferative mesenchymal tumor that predominantly affects the skin and mucous membranes but may involve lymph nodes and visceral organs. Clinically, it manifests as red-purple-brown papules, nodules, or plaques, either painless or painful, often with disfiguring potential. The diagnosis is traditionally based on clinical and histopathological evaluation, although non-invasive imaging techniques are increasingly used to support diagnosis and treatment monitoring. We report a case of HHV-8-negative Kaposi sarcoma evaluate

Immunosuppression in kidney transplantation elevates the risk of malignancies, particularly immune-driven and virus-related cancers like Kaposi sarcoma (KS). KS typically manifests as single or multiple skin lesions following kidney transplantation but can also affect other organs. Involvement of the kidney allograft by KS is exceptionally rare, with only a few cases documented. In this report, we present all known cases of KS involving kidney allografts in adult transplant recipients in Qatar, accompanied by a brief review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Human herpes virus 8 (HHV-8) or Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV) is an opportunistic oncovirus that causes multiple pathologic entities.
METHODS: We present a case of fatal HHV-8-associated multisystem illness with disseminated Kaposi sarcoma and HHV8-associated lymphoproliferative disorder with systemic inflammation. We conducted a narrative review of the literature on HHV-8 in transplantation with a goal of illuminating the spectrum of HHV-8-associated diseases in this vulnerable population, modes of disease transmission, and the potential role for donor and recipient screening

Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a rare multifocal tumor originating from the cells lining the blood vessels. It is characterized by vascular proliferation and is usually associated with immunosuppression due to multiple factors, including AIDS or organ transplantation. However, sporadic cases of KS have been reported in HIV-negative immunocompetent patients. Paclitaxel has shown efficacy and may be an alternative for the initial therapy of patients with KS. We report a case of KS in a 70-year-old Asian male who was HIV-negative, with no history of immunosuppression or homosexuality and a good response

BACKGROUND: Mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most common cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Skin-directed therapies, including phototherapy, are the first-line treatment modalities. Psoralen plus ultraviolet A light photochemotherapy (PUVA) is quite effective in controlling the disease; however, long-term adverse effects, particularly carcinogenesis, are the cons of this treatment.
OBJECTIVE: There are various studies on the negative impact of PUVA on skin cancer in patients with autoimmune skin diseases. The data on the long-term effects of phototherapy on MF patients are scarce.
METHODS: All MF cases

Kaposi sarcoma (KS) arises in the context of 4 epidemiologic-clinical settings: Classic, endemic, epidemic, and iatrogenic; the most serious types are endemic and epidemic, and visceral involvement occurs mostly in the latter. Several morphological variants of KS have been described, of which the anaplastic one is highly aggressive. We report the case of an anaplastic KS arising from the ascending colon in a 32-year-old human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive male patient with a 6-year history of multiple mucocutaneous KS. Anaplastic KS is most frequent in endemic and classic settings; the
