Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a virally driven vascular tumor that usually has a multifocal origin, with multiple vascular nodules in the skin and other organs, particularly the gastrointestinal tract. Four variants of KS have been described: HIV-related, African, iatrogenic and classic. Primary classic KS of the head and neck is rare in any case, but KS arising in intraparotid lymph nodes, especially with no cutaneous involvement, is exceptionally rare. We report the case of an immunocompetent 71-year-old man who presented with a three-month history of a slowly progressive swelling in the right pa

An infant initially diagnosed with a parotid hemangioma presented with stridor and thrombocytopenia. Diagnosis of Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma was confirmed with biopsy. The child succumbed to multi-system organ failure related to consumptive coagulopathy despite aggressive medical management. Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma is a rare head and neck tumor that may be mistaken for a hemangioma on preliminary diagnosis, which may lead to increased morbidity and mortality especially in the setting of Kasabach-Merritt phenomenon. A platelet count may provide an early and important clue to the po

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a multifocal neoplastic proliferation of endothelial cells predominantly involving skin and other organs. HIV-associated Kaposi's sarcoma has been rarely reported from India. A 38-year-old male presented with persistent swelling on the left lower limb for one year along with multiple erythematous to dusky papules and plaques of one and half months duration and swelling and black discoloration of right lower limb for one month. Cutaneous examination revealed numerous skin colored and erythematous papules and plaques distributed on the left lower limb on the anteromedial

Posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorders (PTLDs), a heterogeneous group of monoclonal or polyclonal lesions, occur in immunosuppressed patients after solid organ or bone marrow transplantation. Although most PTLDs are Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)+ and seem to represent EBV-induced proliferations of monoclonal (or less often polyclonal) B, T, or plasma cells, a subset of PTLDs is EBV-. Because Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus/human herpesvirus 8 (KSHV/HHV-8) has been described in association with the development of hematolymphoid and nonhematolymphoid neoplasms in HIV+ patients, we investi

Murine gammaherpesvirus 68 (MHV-68) is a natural pathogen of rodents closely related to the human gammaherpesviruses Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus and EBV. Following intranasal infection, the virus replicates in the lung epithelium prior to establishing latent infection in lymphoid tissue. Infection of mice deficient in IFN-gammaR signaling (IFN-gammaR-/-) results in a multiple organ fibrosis, in which the spleen is severely affected. We show here that by Day 12 postinfection, prior to development of fibrosis in the spleens of IFN-gammaR-/- mice, different subsets of splenic macropha

Given the fact that infectious agents contribute to around 18% of human cancers worldwide, it would seem prudent to explore their role in neoplasms of the ocular adnexa: primary malignancies of the conjunctiva, lacrimal glands, eyelids, and orbit. By elucidating the mechanisms by which infectious agents contribute to oncogenesis, the management, treatment, and prevention of these neoplasms may one day parallel what is already in place for cancers such as cervical cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma and gastric adenocarcinoma. Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is an unusual vascular tumor characterized by multiple reddish blue nodules, which usually present on the skin of the lower and upper extremities. KS may also involve mucosal sites, lymph nodes and visceral organs. During the last two decades, with the large increase in the incidence of this tumor associated with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), there have been increasing number of cases with KS presenting on the skin or mucosa of the head and neck. A review of the literature revealed that only six cases of primary KS of the nasal cavity have previously bee

The oral cavity contains many organs and tissues compressed in a small area. Accordingly oral tumors have a wide variety of appearances. Reactive hyper-plastic lesions include epulis, morsicatio, traumatic ulcer or palatal hyperplasia. These benign lesions must be separated clinically and histologically from precancerous and neoplastic lesions. In leukoplakia, the individual risk can be estimated by clinical signs. Nevertheless histopathology is mandatory because precancerous lesions usually precede or accompany most oral cancers. Amalgam tattoo, oral nevi and melanoacanthoma have to be considered

The incidence of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is higher in organ transplant recipients. The lesions are mainly cutaneous and isolated visceral involvement is rare. We herewith report a 38-year-old male patient, who underwent a cadaveric donor renal transplantation for chronic interstitial nephropathy. His immunosuppression protocol consisted of corticosteroids, tacrolimus and mycophenolate mofetil. Twenty-five months later, he presented with diarrhea and epigastric pain. An upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed an ulcer in the body of the stomach. Histological examination coupled with immunohisto

The occurrence of malignancies is a well-known serious complication after organ transplantation. Despite the fact that many factors may be involved, the pathogenesis is still unclear. The aim of the present study was to examine the incidence and clinical characteristics of de novo malignancies that arise after renal transplantation over a 13-year experience in a single center in the Balkan Peninsula. During this period, 185 renal transplantations (139 living related and 46 cadaveric) were followed in our department. Overall, 19 malignancies (9.78%) were observed in 15 patients (7.8%). The mean

Classic Kaposi s sarcoma (KS) affects lower extremities in older adults, showing a progressive, benign course. It can also involve oral mucosa and gastrointestinal tract with a lower frequency. The involvement of internal organs and lymph nodes is rare, and its primary compromise is even more uncommon. We report an unusual presentation of classic KS in the lymph nodes of three patients. A 46 years old male had a primary involvement of an inguinal lymph node. Dermal involvement appeared one year later. A 58years old male and a 76years old female with simultaneous dermal and lymph node involveme

Kaposi's sarcoma (Ks) a relatively common malignancy after kidney transplantation, generally presents as characteristic dermatomucosal lesions. Visceral organ involvement is common in conjunction with skin lesions; however, isolated visceral KS is an uncommon disease among kidney recipients. Isolated primary pulmonary KS is a rare finding in this population. Herein we have reported on a 38-year-old renal recipient male with respiratory symptoms and a normal dermatomucosal examination without lymphadenopathy. Chest imaging revealed multiple, bilateral, ill-defined nodular opacities without lymp

Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) is causally associated with Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). KS is most frequently observed in HIV patients and in solid organ transplant recipients. The role of HHV-8 in allogeneic haematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) remains to be determined. Here we describe a case in which KS concomitantly occurred with CMV reactivation after a non-myeloablative allogeneic HCT and presented with skin lesions, but not visceral involvement. Skin biopsy confirmed the diagnosis and ruled out graft versus host disease or disease recurrence. Molecular findings indicated viral reactivation

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a recognised complication following kidney transplantation, but the incidence varies according to the geographical area. Although it is a rare tumour, its incidence increases dramatically after solid-organ transplantation. The immunosuppressive medications reactivate human herpes virus 8, which has been proposed as the offending agent. The usual treatment of KS is to reduce immunosuppression, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Nevertheless, the mortality still remains considerably high and has been reported between 8 and 14%. Sirolimus (SRL) has properties which may be use

To develop an animal model of Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) infection uniquely suited to evaluate longitudinal patterns of viral gene expression, cell tropism, and immune responses, we injected NOD/SCID mice intravenously with purified virus and measured latent and lytic viral transcripts in distal organs over the subsequent 4 months. We observed sequential escalation of first latent and then lytic KSHV gene expression coupled with electron micrographic evidence of virion production within the murine spleen. Using novel technology that integrates flow cytometry with immunofluore

Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a low-grade vascular tumor that typically manifests as one of four variants: classic KS, endemic (African) KS, iatrogenic (organ transplant-related) KS, or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related KS. Several clinical and epidemiologic differences have been noted among these variants. Classic KS and endemic KS rarely require radiologic evaluation due to their usually chronic course and stability of skin compromise. However, iatrogenic KS and AIDS-related KS, the most common forms of the disease, are frequently disseminated or symptomatic and may thus require ima

We report a case of simultaneous involvement of the spleen and the left kidney in a marginal zone lymphoma with a monotypic lymphoplasmacytic cell component, which transformed into a diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the immunoblastic type. PCR showed that the small and large B-cell populations carried the same type of immunoglobulin heavy chain gene rearrangement. This type of rearrangement was detected in the spleen, the latero-aortic lymphadenopathy and the kidney demonstrating that it is the same lymphoma that affected both organs and the lymph nodes. Primary renal lymphoma is very rare and

A 39-year-old man presented with a chronic nonhealing toe ulcer and multiple skin-colored papules on the back, arms, and knees. From an initial small erosion, the toe lesion ulcerated over a 1.5-year period, while the papules progressed over a 6-month period, first appearing on the back and then spreading to the arms and knees. The past medical and family history were non-contributory. Pertinent findings included the aforementioned well-defined, asymmetric, shiny papules (Fig. 1). There were multiple, discrete, erythematous, pedunculated, tumor-like masses of various sizes over the right thigh

Among 772 kidney transplant recipients in two centers 25 patients developed Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) (3.2%). The twenty-two of 25 recipients with regular follow-up records were compared for predisposing factors with another group of 22 renal transplant recipients. All patients received cyclosporine (CsA), azathioprine, or mycophenolate mofetil and steroids; patients who received cadaver donor organs additionally received antilymphocyte globulin for induction. KS was diagnosed at a mean of 25.8 months after transplantation. The male to female ratio; mean age; mean follow-up period; hepatitis B, he
