To characterize the postmortem pulmonary disease and analyze the effectiveness of antemortem diagnosis, we examined the clinical records and autopsy material from 54 patients who died of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. At autopsy, all patients had pulmonary disease. One or more specific diagnoses were made in 53, including opportunistic infection, nonopportunistic infection, and Kaposi's sarcoma. A 73 year-old male with a Kaposi's sarcoma presenting as multiple, red-purple papules and nodules on the vermillion border and as ulcerations on the labial mucosa, is described. No other skin or organ involvements were found. The main clinical and histopathological characteristics of the classic form of Kaposi's sarcoma are briefly discussed and the recent aspects on tumor histogenesis and pathogenesis are analysed.

An increased incidence of certain neoplasms occurs in immunodeficiency states. The incidence of cancer in organ transplant patients is approximately 4%. The predominant tumors are lymphomas, carcinomas of the skin and lips, carcinomas of the vulva/perineum, in situ carcinomas of the uterine cervix, and Kaposi sarcoma (KS). A patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome presented with multiple pruritic papules and nodules over the trunk and extremities. The gastrointestinal tract is a major target organ of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Opportunistic infections or Kaposi's sarcoma within the gastrointestinal tract are the two most frequent lesions. Diarrhoea, weight loss or odynophagy may be the presenting symptoms or signs for which a gastroenterological consultation is sought. In this report we present our own observations of patients with AIDS. Diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of this new syndrome are discussed.

Hospital records were reviewed on 78 consecutive patients (33 homosexuals, 37 Haitians and 8 IV drug abusers) who had AIDS and who underwent fiberoptic bronchoscopy over a two year period. Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) was the most common bronchoscopic finding (53.8% of patients) followed by tuberculosis (14.1%), cytomegalovirus infection (12.8%) and atypical mycobacteriosis (3.8%).
