Retrorectal schwannoma: a case report of an extremely rare location.

Schwannomas are tumors that arise from Schwann cells in the neural sheath. They are usually benign tumors and rarely occur in the retroperitoneal space. Retro rectal schwannomas often lack specific symptoms and present non-orienting radiologic imaging characteristics, making the diagnosis challenging. We herein report the case of a 66-year-old female patient who presented with abdominal pain and urinary retention. A presacral mass was detected on imaging and the patient underwent a surgical excision of the tumor. The diagnosis of such lesions is rigorous due to their uncommon location and very

Exploring the frontier: promising survival in selected patients after CRS and HIPEC for peritoneal metastases from hepatocellular carcinoma-a systematic review.

Hepatocellular carcinoma with peritoneal metastases (HCC-PM) is a rare and aggressive disease with limited therapeutic options and poor prognosis under systemic treatments. Recent evidence suggests that cytoreductive surgery (CRS) combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) may provide a survival benefit in selected patients. This systematic review aims to assess the effectiveness and safety of CRS + HIPEC in the management of HCC-PM. This study was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines and registered in PROSPERO(CRD42024627130). We systematically searched MEDLINE, Web o

Unicentric Castleman Disease Presenting with a Ruptured Pseudoaneurysm within the Tumor: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Castleman disease is a lymphoproliferative disorder of unknown etiology, typically reported as a hypervascular tumor. Here, we report the first known case of unicentric Castleman disease in which a pseudoaneurysm developed within the tumor and ruptured spontaneously. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old male was hospitalized due to the sudden onset of epigastric pain. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed a 60-mm hypovascular mass located on the dorsal side of the pancreas, with evidence of extravasation within the tumor. Emergency angiography was performed; nonetheless, the pseudoaneurysm

Robotic-Assisted Retroperitoneal Sarcoma Resection with Left Renal Vein Reconstruction with Bovine Pericardium.

BACKGROUND: In this video demonstration, we highlight the robotic-assisted resection of a left retroperitoneal leiomyosarcoma and reconstruction of the left renal vein with a bovine pericardial patch. PATIENT AND METHODS: The patient was placed supine on a split leg table, in 20 degrees of Trendelenburg. After the DaVinci Xi robot was docked, the posterior peritoneum was incised, lifting the right colon and cecum off the retroperitoneum. The peritoneum was temporarily tethered to the anterior abdominal wall using holding stitches. The right gonadal vein was identified and dissected into its i

A Diagnostic Challenge: Retroperitoneal Extraskeletal Ewing Sarcoma with Subaortic Growth and Partial Aortic Encasement Presenting with Nephrolithiasis-Like Symptoms in a Middle-Aged South Asian Male.

Ewing sarcoma is an atypical and aggressive bone malignancy, most commonly observed in the pediatric population. Looking at epidemiological data shows that individuals of Caucasian descent are most susceptible to the disease, which additionally show a slight male predominance. We present the case of a 46-year-old male of South Asian descent who came into an outpatient clinic complaining of ongoing pain in the left posterior flank. The clinical picture initially raised suspicion for recurrent Nephrolithiasis because of the patient's previous medical history. The patient was advised to get a CT

Case Report: Chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy achieve complete response for metastatic ureteral urothelial carcinoma with significant squamous differentiation.

BACKGROUND: The majority of tumors in the upper urinary tract are classified as urothelial carcinomas, with only 15% exhibiting different levels of squamous differentiation, known as the squamous subtype. These tumors tend to be more aggressive and are associated with a worse prognosis compared to standard urothelial carcinomas. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old man was found to have cancer in his left ureter and subsequently underwent a robot-assisted laparoscopic procedure to partially remove the left ureter and perform a ureterovesical anastomosis. The postoperative analysis revealed high-g

Intratesticular Fetus in Fetu Arising from an Intra-Abdominal Undescended Right Testis: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Fetus in fetu (FIF) is a rare congenital anomaly. The most common location of FIF is the retroperitoneum. FIF of testicular origin is extremely rare, with only 9 cases reported previously. We present a case of intratesticular FIF within an intra-abdominal undescended right testis and review previously reported cases to discuss the possibility of intratesticular FIF. CASE PRESENTATION: A male neonate was born through normal vaginal delivery at 37 weeks and 5 days of gestation, with a birth weight of 2648 g. An abdominal mass suspected to be a FIF was prenatally detected. At 26 we

Predictors of survival in dedifferentiated liposarcoma: A population-based analysis of the SEER database.

Dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDLPS) represents a high-grade sarcoma characterized by transition from well-differentiated liposarcoma to non-lipogenic sarcoma. Population-based data examining prognostic factors and treatment outcomes remain limited. This study aimed to identify predictors of survival and evaluate treatment modalities in patients with DDLPS using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. We identified 3962 patients diagnosed with DDLPS between 2000 to 2022 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. Patient demographics, tumor characteristics,

Antenatal oral fetus in fetu with a mandibular defect: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Fetus in fetu (FIF) is a rare congenital condition defined by the presence of a non-viable, malformed parasitic fetus located within the body of a living autosite host twin, most commonly found in the retroperitoneum. The clinical manifestations of FIF vary with the anatomical site. Timely and accurate diagnosis is crucial to prevent significant morbidity in the host twin resulting from the growth of the FIF mass. Comprehensive clinicopathological data regarding FIF remain limited, as existing literature on the subject is sparse. The majority of reported cases have been diagnosed

Case Report: Hybrid low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma and sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma of the retroperitoneum.

Retroperitoneal Sarcomas are rare malignancies that comprise 1%-2% of all malignant tumors. Among them, Low-Grade Fibromyxoid Sarcoma (LGFMS) and Sclerosing Epithelioid Fibrosarcoma (SEF) are ultra-rare sarcomas, especially in retroperitoneum. Hybrid LGFMS/SEF is even rarer, with limited cases reported in literature. We present the case of a 63-years old male with complaints on left hypochondrial discomfort, weight loss, and generalized weakness. Imaging revealed a large retroperitoneal mass with suspicion of local invasion. The patient underwent en-bloc surgical resection, including distal pa

Duodenal diverticulum perforation with pneumo-retroperitoneum: a case report of rare presentation.

Perforation of a duodenal diverticulum is rare but associated with high morbidity and mortality. Retroperitoneal perforations often present atypically, delaying diagnosis and management. We describe a 48-year-old woman presented to the hospital with abdominal pain after influenza A infection. Initial computed tomography suggested hollow viscus perforation, and she underwent laparoscopic lavage and drainage. Persistent bilious drainage and follow-up imaging revealed perforation of the third portion of the duodenum with retroperitoneal abscess. Exploratory laparotomy demonstrated a 2 × 2 cm perf

Massive Retroperitoneal Hematoma Following Vaginal Delivery: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Retroperitoneal hematoma is a rare but potentially life-threatening cause of concealed postpartum hemorrhage. Because bleeding is contained within the retroperitoneum, external blood loss may be absent, and symptoms may be nonspecific, resulting in delayed diagnosis. Rapid recognition and intervention are essential to reduce morbidity and mortality. We report a 21-year-old primigravida who developed severe hypotension and pelvic pain a few hours after an uncomplicated vaginal delivery with a small median episiotomy. Ultrasound revealed a 9 × 9 cm pelvic hematoma. Despite aggressive resuscitati

Laparoscopy for stable penetrating abdominal trauma.

INTRODUCTION: Trauma laparotomy remains the gold standard for treating penetrating abdominal trauma, but it carries a higher risk of complications and longer hospital stays than other approaches. We explored whether laparoscopy could serve as a valuable alternative in the trauma setting. This study analysed the management of haemodynamically stable patients with penetrating abdominal trauma to assess the applicability of laparoscopy and its potential to reduce non-therapeutic laparotomies. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of haemodynamically stable patients with penetrating abdomin

Frozen-Thawed ovarian autografts treated with scaffold-based melatonin delivery in rats.

INTRODUCTION: Cryopreserved ovarian tissue transplantation is the only option for fertility preservation in children undergoing cytotoxic treatments. Among antioxidant substances, melatonin has been increasingly investigated to improve the avascular ovarian graft. However, little is known about its effect when applied through an absorbable sponge matrix - a local and non-invasive application approach. METHODS: Thirty adult Wistar rats were divided into three experimental groups (n = 10 each): control (CG), Gelfoam® (GF), and Gelfoam® + melatonin (GFM). The animals underwent oophorectomy and bo

Pathological complete response following neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy in cancer of unknown primary: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cancers of unknown primary (CUP) are a heterogeneous group of metastatic malignancies in which a primary tumor cannot be identified despite comprehensive diagnostic evaluation. Most CUP patients have a poor prognosis, and only 15-20% can be classified into favorable subgroups. Although molecularly guided therapy (MGT) has shown survival benefits in global phase II studies, the overall outcomes remain unsatisfactory. In particular, intrathoracic lymph node metastasis of unknown origin represents a clinical dilemma, with limited evidence guiding treatment decisions. CASE DESCRIPTION
