Undermining of the soft tissue on the surface of the maxilla at the time of cleft lip repair remains a controversial issue in cleft management. Using 64 eight-week-old beagles, we tested the hypothesis that lip repair with soft-tissue undermining contributes more to maxillofacial growth aberrations than lip repair without these additional procedures. We report 2 patients with paraspinous sarcoma treated with omental transposition tunneled through a defect in the lumbar fascia that resurfaced in the soft tissues of the lower back. Traditional reconstruction with skin flaps was unsatisfactory because of prior irradiation to the area. In 1 patient the omentum obliterated a cavity connecting the dura to the skin to prevent cerebrospinal fluid leak. Soft tissue reactions to two materials of different microstructure made with porous and dense hydroxyapatite ceramic granules, were compared in this study. Each was implanted subcutaneously in the abdomen of 10 dogs. The implants were removed 1, 3 and 6 months after implantation, and examined by light microscopy. Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML), introduced in 1969 by Rosai and Dorfman, is a benign and self-limited (albeit often relapsing) pseudolymphomatous entity with characteristic histopathologic features. A method for arterial tree mapping that can be used in cadaver soft tissue is presented.
