Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma with lower extremity metastasis: PET/CT imaging.

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma is usually confined to the abdomen and pelvis. Extra-abdominal and extrapelvic dissemination is very uncommon mostly at advanced stages of the disease. This rare clinical event may be related to contiguous spread through connecting pathways linking the abdomen and pelvis to the thorax and proximal lower extremity. The authors present a case of advanced malignant peritoneal mesothelioma with contiguous dissemination to the right thigh and proximal leg documented and monitored by F-FDG PET/CT imaging.

Three-dimensional study of the skin/subcutaneous complex using in vivo whole body 3T MRI: review of the literature and confirmation of a generic pattern of organization.

PURPOSE: With a view to developing a tool for predicting the behavior of soft tissues during plastic surgery procedures, we looked for the existence of homologies in the overall pattern of organization of the skin/subcutaneous tissue complex between various body parts, using high-resolution in vivo imaging methods and data available in the literature. METHODS: 3T MRI scanning sequences were performed using appropriate radiofrequency coils on the face, thorax, breast, abdomen and lower extremity of six healthy volunteers. The radiological findings were segmented and converted into volumetric d

Complete resection of a large phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour by chest wall resection and reconstruction.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour is an extremely rare mesenchymal neoplasm of bone or soft tissue. It is associated with paraneoplastic oncogenic osteomalacia through secretion of fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23) which inhibits renal proximal tubule phosphate re-uptake. We report a case of a 36-year-old woman with a large chest wall tumour completely excised by extensive chest wall resection and reconstruction with polypropylene mesh-methylmethacrylate composite and pedicled muscle flaps.

An intrathoracic low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma arising from the chest wall with massive pleural effusion.

We herein report a case of an intrathoracic low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma arising from the chest wall and associated with massive pleural effusion. A 70-year-old man presented with a persistent cough. A chest computed tomography scan revealed a large mass in the right pleural cavity with massive pleural effusion. No malignant cells were recognized in the pleural effusion by thoracentesis. A malignant soft tissue tumor was suspected, and surgery was performed. The tumor arose from the posterior chest wall and was resected with the connected chest wall. The definitive diagnosis was a low grade f

A paradigm for human body finite element model integration from a set of regional models.

Computational modeling offers versatility, scalability, and cost advantages to researchers in the trauma and injury biomechanics communities. The Global Human Body Models Consortium (GHBMC) is a group of government, industry, and academic researchers developing human body models (HBMs) that aim to become the standard tool to meet this growing research need. The objective of this study is to present the methods used to develop the average seated male occupant model (M50, weight = 78 kg, height = 175 cm) from five separately validated body region models (BRMs). BRMs include the head, neck, thora

Experimental exploration of the soft tissue conduction pathway from skin stimulation site to inner ear.

OBJECTIVES: Auditory sensation can be elicited by air conduction (AC) and by bone conduction (BC). It is also possible to elicit such responses by applying the standard clinical bone vibrator to the skin over soft tissue sites on the head, neck, or thorax of humans and animals. This mode of auditory stimulation has been called soft tissue conduction (STC). This study was designed to investigate the pathway between soft tissue sites and the ear. METHODS: The air in the middle ear was replaced with saline solution in an animal with unique anatomy--the fat sand rat, in which about 70% of a thin-

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy and delayed radiation injuries (soft tissue and bony necrosis): 2012 update.

Informal surveys at CME meetings have shown that approximately one-third of patients in the United States receive hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) for delayed radiation injury. More than 600,000 patients receive radiation for malignancy in our country annually, and about one-half will be long-term survivors. Serious radiation complications occur in 5-10% of survivors. A large population of patients is therefore at risk for radiation injury. HBO2 has been applied to treat patients with radiation injury since the mid-1970s. Published results are consistently positive, but the level of evidence for indiv

Intra-thoracic fibrous tissue induction by polylactic acid and epsilon-caprolactone copolymer cubes, with or without slow release of basic fibroblast growth factor.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether implantation of polylactic acid and epsilon-caprolactone copolymer (PLAC) cubes with or without basic fibroblast growth factor (b-FGF) released slowly from gelatin microspheres was able to induce fibrous tissue in the dead space remaining after pneumonectomy in the thoracic cavity. METHODS: Left pneumonectomy was performed in Japanese white rabbits. In the control group (n=6), the left thoracic cavity was closed without any treatment. In the FGF group (n=6), gelatin microspheres that released 100 microg of b-FGF were implanted into the left thoracic cavity.

Malignant perivascular epithelioid cell tumor ('PEComa'): a case report and literature review of cutaneous/subcutaneous presentations.

Perivascular epithelioid cell (PEC) tumors, also called 'PEComas,' are distinct tumors showing PEC differentiation with characteristic histologic and immunophenotypic features. PEComas are rare tumors documented in the literature presenting in numerous anatomic sites including the thorax, abdomen, pelvis, soft tissue and skin. Criteria for malignancy does not exist for the subset of PEComas that pursue an aggressive clinical course. Herein, we present an unusual case of a malignant PEC tumor presenting as a scalp nodule in a patient with a prior diagnosis of 'melanoma' based upon the immunophe

[Spontaneous pneumomediastinum in asthma].

A pneumomediastinum is characterized by free air within the mediastinum. In most cases it is caused by an injury of the thorax. A spontaneous pneumomediastinum (sPM) occurred without any recognizable cause. By a sudden intraalveolar hypertension (caused by cough or physical exertion) a damage of alveoli is followed by diffusion of air along the bronchovascular sheats to the mediastinal soft tissue. sPM is a rare complication of asthma especially in young men. We demonstrate a young asthmatic patient with sPM first diagnosed as an allergic reaction to draw the attention to this rare but differe

Finite element analysis of hard and soft tissue contributions to thoracic response: sensitivity analysis of fluctuations in boundary conditions.

Thoracic trauma is the principle causative factor in 30% of road traffic deaths. Researchers have developed force-deflection corridors of the thorax for various loading conditions in order to elucidate injury mechanisms and to validate the mechanical response of ATDs and numerical human models. A corridor, rather than a single response characteristic, results from the variability inherent in biological experimentation. This response variability is caused by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The intrinsic factors are associated with individual differences among human subjects, e.g. the diff

Citicoline: pharmacological and clinical review, 2006 update.

Cytidine 5'-diphosphocholine, CDP-choline, or citicoline is an essential intermediate in the biosynthetic pathway of structural phospholipids in cell membranes, particularly phosphatidylcholine. Following administration by both the oral and parenteral routes, citicoline releases its two main components, cytidine and choline. Absorption by the oral route is virtually complete, and bioavailability by the oral route is therefore approximately the same as by the intravenous route. Once absorbed, citicoline is widely distributed throughout the body, crosses the blood-brain barrier and reaches the c

Mesenchymal tumours of the thorax: CT findings and pathological features.

Mesenchymal tumours of the thorax are uncommon and may originate from the muscle, bone, cartilage, vessel, nerves, fat and fibrous tissue. These tumours occur at different sites including the lung, pleura, mediastinum or chest wall. Mesenchymal tumours tend to show protean and non-specific imaging characteristics. However, in some instances, the imaging characteristics of the tumour may allow a specific diagnosis to be made, such as with lipoid or vascular tumours.

Metastatic lymphangiosarcoma in a horse.

A lymphangiosarcoma with metastases was found in a horse that presented with respiratory distress and edema in the ventral thorax and abdomen. The necropsy revealed diffuse edema in the subcutaneous connective tissue. Mediastinal, mesenteric, iliac, and renal lymph nodes were enlarged and white with soft, yellowish necrotic areas. Histologic examination revealed numerous channels and disorganized vessels lined by large polyhedral, polymorphic cells. Tumor metastases were observed in the spleen, lungs, and kidneys. Immunohistochemical evaluation of the tumor cells demonstrated positive staining

[Imaging in rheumatology].

Conventional radiography, ultrasonography, scintigraphy, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are important diagnostic tools in rheumatology additional to clinical investigation. Radiography provides information both of the juxtaarticular and the abarticular bone. It is relevant in the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, spondylarthropathies, and osteoporosis, and for the investigation of other regions like the thorax. Sonography is superior to radiography to delineate soft tissue structures such as effusions, tenosynovitis, tendinitis, paratendinitis, bursi
