BACKGROUND: Obesity and increased neck circumference are risk factors for the obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome (SAHS). SAHS is more common in men than in women, despite the fact that women have higher rates of obesity and greater overall body fat. One factor in this apparently paradoxical sex distribution may be the differing patterns of fat deposition adjacent to the upper airway in men and women. A recent case of pleural plaques fibrosis in a worker exposed since 20 years to asbestos induced us to report our experience. A 52-year-old man was seen because of chest multiple opaques of soft tissue density without any symptoms. A method for arterial tree mapping that can be used in cadaver soft tissue is presented. In situ angiograms and photographs are supplemented with profile angiograms of relatively narrow bands of tissue from the removed specimen. Operations for pulmonary metastases were carried out on 33 patients from January 1st 1976 to December 31st 1985 at the Surgical Division, University of Cologne. In six cases each, the primary tumors were hypernephromas, colorectal carcinomas and osteocarcinoma. One hundred thirty patients with lung cancer were studied to determine the incidence of unilateral thoracic soft-tissue accumulation (UTS) of 99mTc methylene diphosphonate (MDP). The finding was present in 60 of 130 (46%) of the patients. Of 52 patients who had received radiation therapy to the primary tumor in the chest, 46 (88%) had UTS, while six (12%) did not. Radiation therapy to lung tumors was the most significant of the factors studied in unilateral soft-tissue uptake of bone agent in the thorax of patients with lung cancer.

The collagen diseases, an ill-defined group of clinical entities, have as their basis a generalized alteration of the connective tissue, especially of its extracellular components. They include periarteritis nodosa, disseminated lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, scleroderma, rheumatic fever and rheumatoid arthritis.
