Giant lipoma in the Retzius space resected under laparoscopy: A case report.

Lipoma is a common type of benign soft tissue tumor that can occur in the shoulders, neck and back, in addition to other body parts. The Retzius space is a small anatomical space between the pubic symphysis and the bladder located extraperitoneally and filled with loose fatty connective tissue. Giant lipomas are rare in the Retzius space. A 61-year-old Chinese male arrived at Beijing Yanhua Hospital (Beijing, China) due to frequent urination, and CT scan images of the lower abdomen observed a large pelvic mass and left inguinal hernia. Preoperative clinical manifestations and auxiliary examina

Design of New Concept of Knitted Hernia Implant.

A knitted implant, unilaterally modified with plasma-assisted chemical-vapor deposition (PACVD), and with a nano-layer of fluorine derivative supplementation, for reducing the risk of complications related to adhesions, and the formation of a thick postoperative scar was prepared. The biological evaluation of designed or modified medical devices is the main aspect of preclinical research. If such studies use a medical device with prolonged contact with connective tissue (more than 30 days), biocompatibility studies require a safety assessment in terms of toxicity in vitro and in vivo, allergen

Bilateral ureteral reimplantation in a patient with an intraperitoneal ectopic bipenis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Diphallia is a highly uncommon congenital urogenital abnormality and a few connected reports have been published. However, no case of intraabdominal heterotopic diphallus has been documented to date. In the present study, we present a rare case of intraperitoneal ectopic bipenis. CASE SUMMARY: A 49-year-old man was hospitalized with the chief complaint of hydronephrosis of both kidneys, which was discovered three days earlier through regular physical examination performed using urological ultrasound without significant lumbar or abdominal pain or bladder irritation. Physical exami

Leiomyosarcoma arising from the ovarian vein as a gynecologic malignancy: Two case reports and a review of the literature.

Leiomyosarcoma arising from the ovarian vein has rarely been reported. Herein, we report two cases from a single institute. Given their direct connections to ovarian vessels, both leiomyosarcomas were initially suspected to be gynecological malignancies. In one case, leiomyosarcoma was discovered incidentally without any clinical symptoms; it had a close connection with the ovarian vein, was removed surgically, and the patient has survived for over 12 years. In another case, bowel obstruction caused by the tumor helped to identify metastatic leiomyosarcoma. Blood flow was supplied by the ovari

Two giant connected retroperitoneal schwannomas: a rare case report.

Schwannoma is a type of tumor originating from Schwann cells of peripheral nerves. In this study, we report a rare case of two giant connected retroperitoneal schwannomas. The patient presented to our department with a 1-day history of abdominal pain and without other symptoms. There were no abnormalities in the patient's tumor markers. Abdominal plain computed tomography (CT) revealed two (combined) retroperitoneal masses appearing as soft tissue-density shadows with uneven internal density, cystic low-density shadows, and patchy calcification shadows. The larger mass measured approximately 1

Giant aggressive intra-abdominal desmoid-type fibromatosis - case report.

INTRODUCTION: Aggressive fibromatosis, also known as desmoid tumour (DT), is a locally invasive soft tissue malignancy originating from fascial planes, connective tissue, and musculoaponeurotic structures of the muscles. The symptoms greatly depend on the location and size of the tumour. CASE REPORT: A 68-year-old male patient without any comorbidities with a large, palpable mass in the abdomen underwent computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen during diagnostic examination in September 2017 in another centre. The CT scan revealed a giant intraperitoneal 30×40cm tumour without signs of infiltr

The Mediastinal Visceral Space: The Central Pathway for the Spread of Mediastinal Disease.

The connective tissue of the mediastinal visceral space extends from the neck through the chest and into the abdomen. This connective tissue encases the esophagus and tracheobronchial tree and is bounded by the perivisceral fascia. The continuous longitudinal and axial interconnection of the mediastinal visceral space accounts for commonly observed bidirectional pathways of disease through the chest. Disease patterns that seem counterintuitive when viewed through the lens of gross anatomy are more understandable in view of this knowledge. This article illustrates case examples of the spread of

[Abdominal soft tissue tumors].

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are the most common mesenchymal tumors in the abdomen and occur in Germany with an incidence of 10 to 15 cases per million inhabitants. Clear identification and characterization are of major importance for the prognosis and therapy of patients. Similarly, they have to be differentiated from other mesenchymal neoplasias such as leiomyomatous, neurogenic, adipocytic, and fibroblastic tumors. Additionally, the number of translocation positive neoplasias is increasing, requiring the use of adequate molecular assays. The aim of this paper is to give practical advice

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy for the Treatment of Fournier's Gangrene: A Rare Case with Rectal Fistula and Systematic Review of the Literature.

Fournier's gangrene (FG) is a Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infection (NSTI) of the perineal region characterized by high morbidity and mortality even if appropriately treated. The main treatment strategies are surgical debridement, broad-spectrum antibiotics, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, NPWT (Negative Pressure Wound Therapy), and plastic surgery reconstruction. We present the case of a 50-year-old woman with an NSTI of the abdomen, pelvis, and perineal region associated with a rectal fistula referred to our department. After surgical debridement and a diverting blow-out colostomy, an NPWT system com

Myxofibrosarcoma of the abdominal wall : A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Myxofibrosarcoma (MFS) is a subtype of soft tissue sarcoma characterized by diffuse infiltration patterns. Myxofibrosarcoma arises often in extremities. Its occurrence in the abdominal wall is extremely rare. Herein, we present here a case of high-grade MFS of the abdominal wall discovered in a 58-year-old woman complaining of an abdominal mass. PRESENTATION OF CASE: This report illustrates the case of a female who presented a mass in the right lower quadrant of the abdomen. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a well-circumcised, heterogeneous soft tissue mass. We p

The Role of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in (Future) Cancer Staging: Note the Nodes.

The presence or absence of lymph node metastases is a very important prognostic factor in patients with solid tumors. Current invasive and noninvasive diagnostic methods for N-staging like lymph node dissection, morphologic computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or positron emission tomography-computed tomography have significant limitations because of technical, biological, or anatomical reasons. Therefore, there is a great clinical need for more precise, reliable, and noninvasive N-staging in patients with solid tumors. Using ultrasmall superparamagnetic particles of ironoxide

Morphological speculation of the MHPD and related clinical projections.

OBJECTIVE: The concept of mesopancreas has been brought into focus nowadays. Studies on membrane morphology of pancreas are clinically significant in determining an ideal surgical route for a "holy plane". In this paper, we aimed to observe the structure of the peripancreatic membranes and its interactions with adjacent tissues; tentatively put forward the proposition of mesohepatopancreaticoduodenum (MHPD) and explore in depth in surgical local resection. METHODS: 33 cadavers were examined in the experiment, including 30 for gross anatomy and 3 for histological observation after transection.

Development and assessment of a telesonography system for musculoskeletal imaging.

BACKGROUND: Telesonography systems have been developed to overcome barriers to accessing diagnostic ultrasound for patients in rural and remote communities. However, most previous telesonography systems have been designed for performing only abdominal and obstetrical exams. In this paper, we describe the development and assessment of a musculoskeletal (MSK) telesonography system. METHODS: We developed a 4-degrees-of-freedom (DOF) robot to manipulate an ultrasound probe. The robot was remotely controlled by a radiologist operating a joystick at the master site. The telesonography system was us

Dystrophic calcinosis cutis associated with systemic lupus erythematosus: a case report.

Calcinosis cutis is a rare and potentially disabling condition characterized by calcium deposition in soft tissues. When associated with autoimmune connective tissue diseases, calcinosis cutis is classified as Dystrophic Calcinosis Cutis (DCC), being its occurrence in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients fairly uncommon. We report a case of DCC in a 49 years old woman with eleven years evolution SLE that presented with a two years history of multiple painful skin lesions, some of them ulcerated and exhibiting a chalky white-yellow floor, in both hands, forearms, thighs, buttocks, abdome

Definitive External Fixation for Anterior Stabilization of Combat-related Pelvic Ring Injuries, With or Without Sacroiliac Fixation.

BACKGROUND: Combat-related pelvic ring injuries frequently lead to placement of a temporizing external fixation device for early resuscitation and transport. These injuries are commonly complicated by concomitant polytrauma and extensive soft-tissue injuries, which may preclude early internal fixation and lead to prolonged use of external fixation. To date, few studies have reported on the outcomes of definitive external fixation for combat-related pelvic ring injuries. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) In patients treated with definitive external fixation after combat-related pelvic ring injuries, how

Self-paced DenseNet with boundary constraint for automated multi-organ segmentation on abdominal CT images.

Automated multi-organ segmentation on abdominal CT images may replace or complement manual segmentation for clinical applications including image-guided radiation therapy. However, the accuracy of auto-segmentation is challenged by low image contrast, large spatial and inter-patient anatomical variations. In this study, we propose an end-to-end segmentation network, termed self-paced DenseNet, for improved multi-organ segmentation performance, especially for the difficult-to-segment organs. Specifically, a learning-based attention mechanism and dense connection block are seamlessly integrated

En Bloc Resection of a Giant Retroperitoneal Liposarcoma: A Surgical Challenge.

Liposarcomas are exceedingly rare entities that evoke malignant transformation of connective tissue and fat cells. These tumours occur throughout the soft tissues of the body, afflicting a myriad of regions. In the adult population, liposarcomas represent the most prevalent subtype of sarcomas, and often arise de novo. Retroperitoneal liposarcomas (RLS) are a ubiquitous subset of sarcomas that, due to their deep location in the hollow abdomen, can grow to astronomical proportions before manifesting any noticeable symptoms; a prompt diagnosis of RLS is therefore often rendered dilatory. We here
