Soft tissue myoepithelial carcinoma with rhabdoid-like features and EWSR1 rearrangement: Fine needle aspiration cytology with histologic correlation.

A new case of soft tissue myoepithelial carcinoma (MEC) with rhabdoid-like differentiation is presented including cytologic, histopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular biologic features. A 45-year-old woman was admitted to the Hospital with nodular mass involving the lower part of the abdominal wall. Fine-needle aspiration cytology showed a round cell tumor with abundant cytoplasm in the myxoid background. The nuclei were uniform, round to ovoid, with finely distributed chromatin, nucleoli, and pale, vacuolated, or eosinophilic cytoplasm with rhabdoid-like appearance resembling a soft

Clinicopathologic features and surgical management of primary umbilical melanoma: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Primary umbilical melanoma is an uncommon tumor that is poorly described in the medical literature. The umbilical region is a particular anatomic site owing to the presence of embryonal remnants, which can be a potential metastatic pathway, as well as the braided lymphatic network drainage. Hence, primary malignant neoplasms affecting the umbilicus require a different and more radical surgical approach compared with other melanomas. CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, we describe a series of three patients of Caucasian ethnicity who presented with primary umbilical melanoma at the

Advances in tissue engineering; a novel technology making use of an in vivo vascularized chamber.

INTRODUCTION: Regenerative therapies aim to repair or replace damaged tissues. Clinical applications may vary from organ replacement, to breast reconstruction or limb regeneration. In growing 3-dimensional tissue constructs, access to a nourishing vascular network is essential. METHODS: In rats, an arteriovenous loop was surgically established from the femoral vessels and positioned inside a perforated chamber in the groin. Chambers were filled with 2 ml Adipogel, a novel acellular tissue engineering gel -containing growth factors and polymers. Constructs were harvested at 6 and 12 weeks (n=6

IMAGING DIAGNOSIS-SCLEROSING ENCAPSULATING PERITONITIS IN A DOG.

An approximately 5-month-old American Staffordshire terrier was presented with a history of recurrent peritoneal effusion. Abdominal radiographs and ultrasound showed a loculated effusion in the ventral abdomen with dorsal displacement of abdominal organs, hepatomegaly and rounding of liver and splenic margins. Computed tomography demonstrated centrally located gastrointestinal segments surrounded by a thin soft tissue band and a thickened peritoneal lining. At necropsy a fibrous membrane continuous with liver and splenic capsules encapsulated all abdominal organs. Microscopically the abdomina

A Skin-stretching Wound Closure System to Prevent and Manage Dehiscence of High-tension Flap Donor Sites: A Report of 2 Cases.

Tension on the suture line of flap donor sites raises the risk of delayed healing and wound dehiscence. Closing a large flap donor site without a skin/flap graft is a major surgical challenge. Recently, the authors started using a skin-stretching wound closure system designed to harness both mechanical creep and stress-relaxation principles for the management of a variety of surgically closed wounds, including flap donor sites. The system consists of a pair of attachment plates connected by a long, flexible approximation strap that can be invasively (sutured) or noninvasively (by adhesion) sec

Giant cell variant of malignant fibrous histiocytoma of male breast: A rare case report.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is the most common form of soft tissue sarcoma during middle and late adulthood in the deep connective tissue of the extremities, abdominal cavity, and retroperitoneum. However, primary breast sarcoma is a rare disease entity, comprising less than 1% of all breast malignancies. MFH of the male breast is very rare. We present a case of MFH of giant cell variant of the right breast in a 50-year-old male who presented with a painless lump. Following cytological investigation, simple mastectomy was performed. Immunohistochemical staining confirmed the diagnosis

Bioluminescence Tomography-Guided Radiation Therapy for Preclinical Research.

PURPOSE: In preclinical radiation research, it is challenging to localize soft tissue targets based on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) guidance. As a more effective method to localize soft tissue targets, we developed an online bioluminescence tomography (BLT) system for small-animal radiation research platform (SARRP). We demonstrated BLT-guided radiation therapy and validated targeting accuracy based on a newly developed reconstruction algorithm. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The BLT system was designed to dock with the SARRP for image acquisition and to be detached before radiation delivery.

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma with lower extremity metastasis: PET/CT imaging.

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma is usually confined to the abdomen and pelvis. Extra-abdominal and extrapelvic dissemination is very uncommon mostly at advanced stages of the disease. This rare clinical event may be related to contiguous spread through connecting pathways linking the abdomen and pelvis to the thorax and proximal lower extremity. The authors present a case of advanced malignant peritoneal mesothelioma with contiguous dissemination to the right thigh and proximal leg documented and monitored by F-FDG PET/CT imaging.

Three-dimensional study of the skin/subcutaneous complex using in vivo whole body 3T MRI: review of the literature and confirmation of a generic pattern of organization.

PURPOSE: With a view to developing a tool for predicting the behavior of soft tissues during plastic surgery procedures, we looked for the existence of homologies in the overall pattern of organization of the skin/subcutaneous tissue complex between various body parts, using high-resolution in vivo imaging methods and data available in the literature. METHODS: 3T MRI scanning sequences were performed using appropriate radiofrequency coils on the face, thorax, breast, abdomen and lower extremity of six healthy volunteers. The radiological findings were segmented and converted into volumetric d

Tumors Involving Skin, Soft Tissue and Skeletal Muscle: Benign, Primary Malignant or Metastatic?

BACKGROUND: Metastatic cancer with invasion of skin, soft tissue and skeletal muscle is not common. Examples presenting as soft tissue masses could sometimes lead to misdiagnosis with delayed or inappropriate management. The purpose of current study was to investigate clinical characteristics in the involvement of metastatic cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1,097 patients complaining of skin or soft tissue masses and/or lesions were retrospectively reviewed from January 2012 to June 2013. Tumors involving skin, soft tissue and skeletal muscle of head and neck, chest wall, abdominal w

A case of diffuse infiltrating gastrointestinal stromal tumor of sigmoid colon with perforation.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract, and typically present as discrete well-circumscribed but non-encapsulated tumor masses. In this report, we describe a case of colonic perforation caused by an unusual form of GIST. A 72-year-old Japanese woman presented to the emergency department with acute abdominal pain. Under the provisional diagnosis of sigmoid colon perforation, a laparoscopic sigmoidectomy was performed. Although the tumor mass was undetectable during the preoperative examination, a spindle cell lesion with a

Abdominal and pelvic tumors with musculoskeletal histology.

This article is a case-based review of the broad spectrum of tumors with musculoskeletal histology that can arise in the abdomen or pelvis and involve the soft tissues, muscle, and bone. In this article, pathology-proven cases are presented with a focus on radiographic, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography-computed tomography findings. The imaging features that differentiate tumors with musculoskeletal histology from more common abdominal tumors are discussed. Representative cases include malignant fibrous histiocytoma, chondrosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma

IMAGING DIAGNOSIS--URINARY BLADDER DUPLICATION IN A CAT.

A female kitten presented for chronic, intermittent, antibiotic-responsive urinary incontinence and chronic kidney disease. Abdominal ultrasound identified bilateral pelvic/ureteral dilation and three closely apposed thin-walled fluid-filled structures in the caudal abdomen, extending toward the pelvic inlet. Excretory urography and negative contrast cystography identified contrast medium accumulation from the dilated ureters into two tubular soft tissue masses of the caudal abdomen, with subsequent gradual filling of a more cranially located urinary bladder. A retrograde vaginocystourethrogra

[Intra-abdominal soft tissue tumors. What needs to be known to reach the diagnosis with the help of immunohistochemistry, FISH and molecular biology].

Connective tissue tumors located inside the abdomen are a rare heterogeneous group of tumors, except for gastro-intestinal stromal tumors. They may be benign, malignant, or intermediate in terms of biologic potential. Pathologists have to remember the list of all the lesions possibly involved, with their immunohistochemical characteristics, and to know which molecular analyses are needed, with which expected results, and by which team they can be performed. The main tumor types are discussed with diagnostic tools and treatment consequences.

Subcutaneous hemangiosarcoma induced by a foreign body (steel staple) in a cat.

An 8-year-old, female domestic shorthair cat was presented with a ventral abdominal subcutaneous mass. A radiograph showed that the center of the mass contained what appeared to be steel sutures, presumed to be from an ovariohysterectomy performed 7 years earlier. The excised mass was irregular and contained numerous pockets filled with friable necrotic material and hemorrhages that were dissected by fibrous connective tissue bands. Multiple tangled and fragmented pieces of steel staples were deeply embedded within the mass. Histologically, the mass was non-encapsulated, densely cellular, and

Simple technique for augmentation of the facial soft tissue.

Due to the request of numerous patients to improve the aspect of the perioral area in combination with other types of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, we started to use autologous fillers. In fact, there are numerous potential fillers that can be utilized during various operations executed in many bodily areas, such as the breast, abdomen, and face. The muscular fascia as well as the dense connective tissue which the surgeon encounters in various bodily areas during some stages of the operation, in fact, can be removed and replaced both by themselves or superimposed in order to increase th

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy and delayed radiation injuries (soft tissue and bony necrosis): 2012 update.

Informal surveys at CME meetings have shown that approximately one-third of patients in the United States receive hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) for delayed radiation injury. More than 600,000 patients receive radiation for malignancy in our country annually, and about one-half will be long-term survivors. Serious radiation complications occur in 5-10% of survivors. A large population of patients is therefore at risk for radiation injury. HBO2 has been applied to treat patients with radiation injury since the mid-1970s. Published results are consistently positive, but the level of evidence for indiv

Automated tracing of the adventitial contour of aortoiliac and peripheral arterial walls in CT angiography (CTA) to allow calculation of non-calcified plaque burden.

Aortoiliac and lower extremity arterial atherosclerotic plaque burden is a risk factor for the development of visceral and peripheral ischemic and aneurismal vascular disease. While prior research allows automated quantification of calcified plaque in these body regions using CT angiograms, no automated method exists to quantify soft plaque. We developed an automatic algorithm that defines the outer wall contour and wall thickness of vessels to quantify non-calcified plaque in CT angiograms of the chest, abdomen, pelvis, and lower extremities. The algorithm encodes the search space as a constr
