Binary and Ternary Classification Prediction for Breast Cancer and Breast Sclerosing Adenosis With Interpretable Artificial Intelligence From Clinical and Imaging Features: A Retrospective, Diagnostic Accuracy Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Sclerosing adenosis (SA) and breast cancer (BC) often exhibit overlapping clinical, imaging, and pathological characteristics, making them difficult to differentiate. SA may also coexist with BC (SA + BC), including ductal carcinoma in situ (SA-DCIS) and invasive breast cancer (SA-IBC), which complicates diagnosis even when core-needle biopsy (CNB) suggests SA. This study aimed to develop interpretable AI-based binary and ternary classification models that leverage clinical and imaging features to distinguish SA-only from SA + BC and to further differentiate among SA-only, SA-DCIS,

Case Report: Primary cutaneous apocrine carcinoma mimicking breast carcinoma - a rare diagnostic challenge.

BACKGROUND: A 60-year-old male patient presented to a senological clinic with a left axillary tumor. The histomorphological characteristics were ambiguous, initially pointing to apocrine carcinoma of mammary origin. This suspicion led to a delay in establishing the correct diagnosis. Only after complete tumor excision and comprehensive work-up in a multidisciplinary dermato-oncological clinic could a definitive diagnosis of primary cutaneous apocrine carcinoma (PCAC) be reached, allowing for appropriate therapy to be commenced. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient had an unremarkable medical histor

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis: A narrative review based on the Turkish consensus classification.

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rare, heterogeneous inflammatory breast disease lacking a universally accepted classification or a standardized management pathway. To provide a comprehensive narrative synthesis of the current literature on IGM and to contextualize the Turkish IGM clinical classification and treatment algorithm in relation to existing global evidence. A narrative literature review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar (2000-2025). Clinical, radiological, pathological, and therapeutic studies were examined. Previously published Turki

Assessing breast MRI image quality: the bMRI-QUAL scoring system.

OBJECTIVE: The performance of breast MRI (bMRI) depends on image quality, varying due to patient-related or technical/protocol factors. The resulting artifacts can heavily reduce sensitivity and specificity. We developed a bMRI quality scoring system (bMRI-QUAL) for the bMRI standard protocol. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two independent readers with 3 years of experience evaluated 133 consecutive 1.5-T examinations (sample size calculated to ensure reproducibility). Each sequence was rated on a 4-point scale: 0 = not diagnostic; 1 = relevant artifacts with conserved diagnostic value; 2 = slight ar

Direct Segmentation of Mammography and Tomosynthesis Sinograms for Lesion Localization.

Background: The Detection and localization of breast lesions remain challenging in mammography and digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) due to tissue overlap and information loss during volumetric reconstruction. Sinograms preserve the full angular projection data acquired during scanning, enabling analysis of tissue structure without reconstruction. Methods: This study proposes a direct segmentation approach for mammography and DBT sinograms using a U-Net architecture. Experiments were conducted on 1082 annotated mammography mass images from the CBIS-DDSM dataset (521 benign, 561 malignant) and

Prevalence of venous extension in malignant adrenal neoplasia: beyond primary tumors and identification of a novel imaging sign.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of adrenal vein involvement in primary and metastatic adrenal lesions and to determine if morphological changes in tumor shape precede venous extension. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective, single-center observational study evaluated 102 patients: 28 adrenal cortical carcinoma (ACC) patients, and 74 non-ACC cancer patients that presented adrenal metastasis (82 metastatic adrenal lesions). Two readers reviewed cross-sectional imaging to assess tumor size, laterality, venous invasion, and the presence of the "edge sign." Surgical and histopathological c

Risk factors for subsequent thyroid neoplasms development in childhood cancer survivors.

Subsequent thyroid carcinomas (STC) are common after childhood cancer treatment and have well-described risk factors, whereas information on subsequent thyroid adenomas (STA) remains limited. This study compared treatment-related risk factors for STC and STA, assessed their associations with the other subsequent neoplasms and evaluated the incidence of STC relative to the age-matched national general population. The study cohort included 4348 childhood cancer survivors treated between 1975 and 2020; 48% were female, 23% had lymphomas and 77% had solid tumors. STC occurred in 44 survivors (59%

Impact of background parenchymal enhancement on the diagnosis of enhancing lesions in breast MRI: a systematic approach.

OBJECTIVE: Dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) enhances both suspicious lesions and normal tissue, known as background parenchymal enhancement (BPE). There is controversial evidence regarding whether BPE compromises the accuracy of breast MRI. Our aim was to investigate the influence of BPE in the detection of breast lesions by DCE-MRI using an ROI-based approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MRI Images of consecutive patients with indeterminate or suspicious findings on mammography or ultrasound (BI-RADS 0, 3, 4, 5). tested between May 2020 and September 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. Case Report: Discordant pancreatic inflammatory pseudotumor in a breast cancer survivor - a diagnostic dilemma.

BACKGROUND: Differentiating suspicious lesions presents a clinical challenge due to overlapping characteristics among benign, malignant, primary, and secondary pathologies, often leading to diagnostic errors and inappropriate treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: We report on a 54-year-old patient with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) who, during postoperative surveillance, was found to have pancreatic lesions. Although initial imaging and biopsy suggested adenocarcinoma, surgical excision and subsequent histopathological examination revealed chronic pancreatitis with atypical hyperplasia. CONCL

Primary Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumour of the Breast: A Potential Diagnostic Pitfall on Aspiration Cytology.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour (IMT) is an uncommon mesenchymal neoplasm with intermediate malignant potential, typically arising in the lungs, abdomen, or retroperitoneum. Breast involvement is extremely rare, with limited reported cases. To the best of our knowledge, less than 50 cases of this lesion in the breast have been reported to date and cytological descriptions are very rare. A 47-year-old female presented with a painless mass in the right breast. Imaging revealed a well-defined lobulated soft tissue mass categorised as BIRADS 4A. The cytomorphologic features on fine needle aspi

Beyond the lung: recognizing incidental breast lesions on chest computed tomography.

With the widespread use of chest computed tomography (CT) for thoracic evaluation, incidental breast findings are increasingly encountered in routine clinical practice. Although most of these findings are benign, breast cancer may occasionally be first detected on chest CT, performed for unrelated indicators, underscoring the importance of systematic breast assessment during imaging interpretation. This review provides a practical image-based overview of breast lesions on routine chest CT, with the goal of assisting thoracic radiologists and general clinicians in recognizing clinically relevan

Comparative Histological Features of Phyllodes Tumor and Fibroadenoma in Breast Core Needle Biopsies.

BackgroundPhyllodes tumors (PT) are fibroepithelial breast lesions with variable clinical behavior and histological features that frequently overlap with those of fibroadenomas. Accurate differentiation is critical, as PT may exhibit aggressive behavior. However, their distinction is particularly challenging in core needle biopsy, especially for benign and borderline PT, due to the limited amount of tissue provided by this technique. This meta-analysis investigates histological features that improve the distinction between fibroadenomas and PT in core needle biopsies.MethodsWe searched databas

Dynamic curve type serves as an effective tool for the diagnosis of benign or malignant non-mass enhancements on breast MRI.

Identifying malignant non-mass enhancement (NME) in contrast-enhanced breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remains a notable diagnostic challenge due to overlapping imaging features between benign and malignant lesions. Although the delayed-phase kinetic patterns are well-established, the diagnostic value of the initial-phase kinetics has not been fully elucidated. The present study aimed to evaluate the dynamic and morphological characteristics of NME lesions, to determine whether incorporating initial-phase kinetics with delayed-phase analysis improves the discrimination between benign an

Hidradenoma in Axillary Lymph Nodes: A Diagnostic Pitfall Mimicking Metastatic Carcinoma.

Axillary lymph nodes are a common site of metastatic carcinoma, particularly from the breast. Epithelial inclusions within axillary lymph nodes are uncommon but well recognized, most frequently encountered as small, incidental clusters of mammary-type epithelium; squamous, Müllerian, and mixed types are also sporadically identified. Hidradenoma is a benign adnexal neoplasm classically composed of epidermoid/squamoid, intermediate/basaloid, and mucinous cells that most commonly originates in the skin but can arise in the breast parenchyma, with morphologic and genetic features that overlap with

Application of Microflow Imaging in Neoplasm Diagnosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Tumor angiogenesis is a hallmark of malignant transformation. Abnormal vascular structure and blood flow characteristics provide crucial information for differentiating benign from malignant lesions. Conventional ultrasound relies primarily on morphological features, lesion boundaries, and blood flow patterns. However, some tumors exhibit overlapping grayscale characteristics between benign and malignant types. Moreover, color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI) has limitations in detecting microvascular flow. Superb microvascular imaging (SMI) utilizes adaptive algorithms to
