Thirty-two patients with breast abnormalities and 10 normal volunteers were examined with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) utilizing a 0.5-Tesla superconducting magnet imaging system. Sagittal, coronal, and transverse breast imaging with the 50-cm body coil and with a specialized 16 X 8 cm breast coil allowed the evaluation of a single breast. There are a number of sonographic findings seen in fibroadenoma of the breast. In a retrospective study, we examined the biopsy results of 59 masses given the sonographic diagnosis of fibroadenoma. We also reviewed the sonograms of an additional 26 biopsy-proven fibroadenomas that were not diagnosed as such with ultrasound. The ultrasound diagnosis was correct in 50 of 76 fibroadenomas (65.8%). Only 12 of the 76 biopsy-proven fibroadenomas had the classic sonographic appearance of a smooth round or oval mass with homogeneous internal echoes. In two patients who had undergone mastectomies and reconstruction for breast carcinoma, suspicious lesions were noted on chest roentgenograms. Subsequent studies revealed the lesions to be shadows from the reconstructed nipples. The most frequently employed techniques for nipple reconstruction involve the grouping and overlapping of multiple local flaps which results in a round radiodensity on a roentgenogram. Patients with suspicious roentgenographic lesions after breast reconstruction should have oblique films taken to localize the lesion.

Mouse myeloma cells were fused with spleen cells from BALB/c mice immunized with the MCF-7 human mammary carcinoma cell line. Among hybridomas, two (3B18 and 15A8) were selected and cloned. Small tumors of the breast, both benign and malignant, may remain clinically silent for some time before they become large enough to be palpable. In many cases the tumor is revealed on a mammogram that is performed only as part of a routine check-up. A comparative study with mammography and physical examination showed that automated water-path whole-breast sonography contributed to the care of at least one-half of 786 study patients (separate report). Clinical application then followed in an additional 2530 women in whom there were 107 biopsy-proven cancers, 69 discrete biopsied benign lesions, and 121 biopsies of poorly defined lesions, usually some form of fibrocystic disease without a discrete mass. The association of sebaceous gland neoplasms with visceral carcinomas, first described by Muir and Torre, has become widely recognized. Nuclear diameters of breast cancer cells obtained by aspiration cytology from 245 patients were measured by ocular micrometry. The nuclei of 50 benign lesions were also measured. Thirty-one consecutive cases of mammographic isolated, clustered microcalcifications which prompted breast biopsy were studied by radiologic and histopathologic methods. Isolated, clustered microcalcifications were sensitive, but nonspecific cancer markers; 35% of the lesions were malignant and half of these were noninvasive. Radiologic and histopathologic similarities, and overlap between benign and malignant disease, prevented accurate differentiation. Breast biopsy is indicated when isolated, clustered microcalcifications are discovered by mammography.
