Changes of condyloma are sometimes difficult to distinguish from changes seen with inflammation or with squamous metaplasia (SM) in the uterine cervix. Cervical condylomas show increased proliferative activity, so we sought to discover whether this increased activity is more than that seen in SM or with inflammation. Sixty-three examples of transitional cell metaplasia of the cervix or vagina from patients 50 to 84 (average 67.6) years of age are described. Fifty-seven of the 59 patients were postmenopausal and two perimenopausal. Only four patients were documented to have received hormonal therapy. The study presents results of routine bioptic diagnoses. 651 lesions of cervix uteri have been diagnosed during a five-year period. The presented number represented a summary of 26% of the absolute number of 2513 registered neoplastic and precancerous lesions of the female genital. In the present study we evaluated cellular immunitary response in course of asymptomatic ectropion. Biopsies of the injured and healthy zones of the exocervix were carried out. The most reliable cervical smears for the detection of cervical cancer and its precursors are those which contain cells from the transformation zone and endocervical canal. To verify that these regions have been sampled, the cytologist must recognize either endocervical cells or immature squamous metaplastic cells on the smears. We performed an open clinical trial with a new device, the Papette, which simultaneously samples both the exocervix and endocervix. The overall cytologic quality of the smears and the device's acceptability to physicians were assessed in 1,000 women seen consecutively.

OBJECTIVE: To study the relation between the timing of the postpartum examination and the postpartum Papanicolaou smear.
METHODS: One hundred eighty-four women in labor at Arlington Community Hospital were randomized to receive their postpartum Papanicolaou smear at 4, 6, or 8 weeks after delivery. Fifty-nine conisations and 25 vaporizations were carried out using laser CO2 in order to treat a series of 84 cases of severe dysplasias (CIN III). After a follow-up of 4 and 12 months (median period of observation 25 months) it was found that out of 74 patients that were followed up in this way 72 had benefitted from the use of the treatment.
