Since serosal drying and tissue abrasion play an important role in adhesion formation, we tested the hypothesis that the peritoneal instillation of 32% high-molecular-weight dextran 70 (H) before, rather than after, a surgical procedure results in less postoperative adhesion formation and reformation. The authors analyze the usefulness of ultrasonic examination for the assessment of ovarian and endometrial status in 84 patients operated on for tubal and peritoneal sterility. After surgery the patients were recommended nootropic agents and cyclic vitamin therapy for 3 months. In cases with concomitant diseases (endometriosis, small pelvis varicose veins) synthetic estrogen-gestagen drugs, anticoagulants, disaggregants were prescribed. Disturbances in the development of the Müllerian duct system may cause different forms of genital anomalies. We report on a patient with uterus septus and vagina septa, undiagnosed for years, and consequently successfully treated for infertility, who became pregnant immediately after combined microsurgical and operative-hysteroscopic treatment. The pregnancy proceeded without any complications. The patient delivered a healthy girl in the 41st week of gestation.

Patients hospitalized with acute pelvic inflammatory disease at University Medical Center of Jacksonville had a mean age of 26.8 years. Contraception use was minimal and mean gravidity was two. Hospitalized patients had a high incidence of peritonitis and tubo-ovarian abscess. N. gonorrhoeae was cultured in 50%. Mean temperature on admission was 100.5 degrees and mean white blood cell count 15,400. Mean hospitalization was 5.5 days. Two of nine patients tested for HIV were positive (22% of those tested, 2% of all patients reviewed).

Transcervical fallopian tube catheterization to recanalize the proximal (uterine end) fallopian tube are rapidly gaining acceptance for the diagnosis and treatment of tubal obstruction. We describe a new simplified technique for performing this procedure. Our technique obviates the need for hysterocaths and assures delivery of an atraumatic spherical tip of a cannula to the uterotubal junction. Compared with other techniques, it is quick with no need for IV or paracervical anesthesia or analgesia, no cervical dilatation, nor the use of Hyskon nor CO2 insufflation devices.

This report provides comprehensive guidelines to aid practitioners and decision makers in achieving PID prevention and management objectives. The main focus of this document is PID related to STD. These guidelines for the prevention and management of PID were established by staff of CDC in consultation with a group of outside experts. Current data regarding the efficacy of prevention strategies and management approaches form the basis for the guidelines. Because data are incomplete, however, certain aspects of these guidelines represent the current consensus judgment of the consulted experts.

Abdominopelvic actinomycosis associated with the use of an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) is described. In 10 rabbits, ablation of the uterine horn endometrium and the fallopian tube was performed with the Nd:YAG laser at a power of 60 W using the touch technique. Eight weeks postsurgery, biopsies of the tissue site were obtained showing that the endometrium and tubal mucosa were completely destroyed. Thirty women were sterilized using a similar technique hysteroscopically. Tubal occlusion was demonstrated by hysterosalpingography in all cases at 3 months postoperatively.
