Very little is known about congenital neuroblastoma with placental metastases. We reviewed the literature to summarise outcomes and potential risk factors for placental involvement. We performed a systematic review of the PubMed/Ovid/Medline/Embase/Cochrane databases from 1946 to 2024. The initial search identified 61 articles; 16 articles were included in the final analysis. Nineteen cases were identified (9 male, 10 female); 16 were stillborn or dead in the neonatal period. There was an adrenal primary in 89.5%, and these were detected on antenatal ultrasound in 26% of cases. Macroscopic app

Tumor metastasis is the primary cause of cancer treatment failure and mortality. Pregnant patients with cancer sometimes experience a poor prognosis and accelerated disease progression, yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here we show that pregnancy enhances tumor metastasis in female mice by elevating adenosine levels, which drives pre-metastatic niche remodeling. Myeloid cells in placental and uterine tissues exhibit increased expression of adenosine-generating enzymes, CD39 and CD73. The accumulated adenosine recruits neutrophils into the tissues of the pre-metastatic mi

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder that contributes to pregnancy complications like Intra Uterine Growth Restriction (IUGR), leading to compromised foetal outcome. Although maternal metabolic and hormonal imbalances are well-established in PCOS, the specific molecular alterations within the placenta and its outcome remains poorly explored. This study aimed to characterize key molecular signaling alterations in PCOS placentae with respect to steroid hormone receptors, trophoblast lineage specification, along with their structural alterations. To understand the above

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a major microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus and a leading cause of visual impairment. While dyslipidemia has been implicated in DR pathogenesis, the relationship between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and DR remains controversial. This study aimed to investigate the association between HDL-C levels and DR prevalence in diabetic patients type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
METHODS: This study is the second analysis based on a cross-sectional studv. A total of 2001 (858 men and 1143 women) diabetic patients who visited the diabetic

Malaria and cancer are major global health burdens, causing high mortality. While often considered distinct, the two conditions share common features, including continuous cell replication within the body, systemic inflammation, immune modulation and evasion, metabolic reprogramming, endothelial dysfunction, and drug efflux mechanisms. Interestingly, whereas malaria parasite infection promotes Burkitt lymphoma, recent studies in animal models indicate that malaria may activate immune mechanisms against various tumors, thereby improving survival rates. The malaria protein VAR2CSA specifically b

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome is associated with metabolic and hormonal disturbances during pregnancy, but whether these alterations are reflected in the fetal intrauterine exposure environment remains incompletely understood. This study aimed to identify polycystic ovary syndrome-related intrauterine metabolic signatures using late-gestation amniotic fluid.
METHODS: Untargeted metabolomic profiling was performed on late-gestation amniotic fluid samples from women with polycystic ovary syndrome and controls. Differential metabolite analysis, pathway-level analysis, and multilevel sens

We report a 28-year-old-female who presented with primary amenorrhoea, absence of puberty, obesity and normal stature. The subject was clearly short as a child, with a height more than 2 SD below normal until the age of 15 years. The pubertal growth spurt failed to develop. She continued growing at a prepubertal rate until growth ceased at the age of 20 years, reaching her final adult height of 157 cm (SDS -0.86) without hormonal treatment. A combined pituitary hormone stimulation test of anterior pituitary function showed deficiencies of GH, LH and FSH, and low normal serum levels of TSH and

OBJECTIVES: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) has been defined as a systemic, chronic, inflammatory arthritis, usually seronegative for rheumatoid factor (RF), associated with cutaneous psoriasis. The exact prevalence of PsA is unknown and its estimation has been difficult, partly due to the lack of a widely accepted classification criteria. Agreed and validated criteria will facilitate comparison between centres and different countries in the areas of epidemiology, outcome studies and therapeutic trials. A number of classification criteria have been published by Moll & Wright (M & W), Bennett's, Vase

BACKGROUND: Systematic evaluation of the umbilical cord is an integral part of placental examination. Among the important parameters of this exam is the assessment of visible lesions such as knots and discoloration. The latter can be due to funisitis (yellow-white), meconium staining (green), vascular congestion (red-blue), or maternal hyperbilirubinemia (yellow). This case series presents fifteen examples of umbilical cord lesions characterized by foci of brown-black discoloration caused by melanin deposition.
METHODS: Placental pathology reports from our institutions mentioning melanocytes

Chorioangiomas are associated with a significant risk of fetal demise due to high-output cardiac failure. Standard invasive treatment, including fetoscopic laser photocoagulation and intratumoral embolization, shows limited success and has high fetal mortality rates. The biological parallels between chorioangiomas and infantile hemangiomas suggest that these tumors may share common therapeutic targets. Propranolol is a proven therapy for infantile hemangiomas, therefore this established efficacy provides a strong rationale for its consideration in the management of symptomatic or rapidly growi

BACKGROUND: Placental transmogrification of the lung (PTL) is a rare benign pulmonary lesion with limited longitudinal data. It is most often associated with unilateral bullous disease, but may also present as a solitary pulmonary nodule.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old man underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic wedge resection of a 12-mm right upper lobe pulmonary nodule detected on screening chest computed tomography (CT). Histopathology confirmed nodular-type PTL. Seven months later, surveillance CT revealed a new 10-mm solid nodule in the right lower lobe. The lesion persisted on follow-

UNLABELLED: Pseudomonas aeruginosa AG1 (PaeAG1) is a Costa Rican strain that was isolated in 2010 in a major Hospital. This strain has resistance to multiple antibiotics such as β-lactams (including carbapenems), aminoglycosides, and fluoroquinolones. PaeAG1 is considered critical (Priority 1) due to its resistance to carbapenems, and it was the first report of a P. aeruginosa isolate carrying both VIM-2 and IMP-18 genes encoding for metallo-β-lactamases (MBL) enzymes (both with carbapenemase activity). Owing to these traits, we have studied this model for 10 years using diverse approaches inc

BACKGROUND: The influence of pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain (GWG) on perinatal outcomes of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) remains unclear. Therefore, we explored how the above indicators influence pregnancy outcomes in women with PCOS.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted involving the baseline characteristics, laboratory data, and pregnancy outcomes of 722 pregnant women with PCOS. Subjects were grouped in a way to find out risks in their pregnancy outcomes. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate how BMI a

Transcription factors from the family of Signal Transducers and Activators of Transcription (STAT) are activated by numerous cytokines. Two members of this family, STAT5A and STAT5B (collectively called STAT5), have gained prominence in that they are activated by a wide variety of cytokines such as interleukins, erythropoietin, growth hormone, and prolactin. Furthermore, constitutive STAT5 activation is observed in the majority of leukemias and many solid tumors. Inactivation studies in mice as well as human mutations have provided insight into many of STAT5's functions. Disruption of cytokine

Helminths include both parasitic nematodes (roundworms) and platyhelminths (trematode and cestode flatworms) that are abundant, and are of clinical importance. The genetic characterization of parasitic flatworms using advanced molecular tools is central to the diagnosis and control of infections. Although the nuclear genome houses suitable genetic markers (e.g., in ribosomal (r) DNA) for species identification and molecular characterization, the mitochondrial (mt) genome consistently provides a rich source of novel markers for informative systematics and epidemiological studies. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and cancer develop in distinct clinical and biological contexts; however, both conditions expose tissues to chronic metabolic stress, hypoxia, inflammation, and vascular remodelling. In this review, we advance the hypothesis that GDM and cancer share conserved endothelial adaptive response mechanisms, particularly within the placental and tumour-associated vasculature, without implying malignant transformation or direct oncogenic causation. Common alterations in nitric oxide signalling, mitochondrial metabolic programming, intracellular pH regulation, and re

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l
