BACKGROUND: Tularaemia is a rare but re-emergent zoonosis in Germany, which reached a new peak in incidence in 2024. The infection rate of ticks in Germany with Francisella tularensis is only about 8% and the transmission of a clinically apparent infection by blood-sucking arthropods such as ticks, mosquitoes or horseflies accounts for about 30% of the infection routes in humans. Arthropod-borne tularaemia mainly presents as the glandular or ulceroglandular form. Delayed diagnosis and initiation of treatment with associated increased risk of complications are common. Those complications may in

Tularaemia is a rare infection caused by Francisella tularensis. We present three cases of ulceroglandular tularaemia. The patients were diagnosed within the same month and had possibly been exposed to the bacteria in Djursland, Denmark. All patients were treated with antibiotics for weeks. Two patients needed surgical revision of suppurative lymphadenitis before complete remission of their symptoms. Tularaemia should be considered if a patient presents with fever, ulcer and regional lymphadenopathy, especially if there is a history of tick or mosquito bites or direct contact with animals.

Tularaemia is a zoonotic disease caused by the Gram-negative bacterium, Francisella tularensis. Depending on its entry route into the organism, F. tularensis causes different diseases, ranging from life-threatening pneumonia to less severe ulceroglandular tularaemia. Various strains with different geographical distributions exhibit different levels of virulence. F. tularensis is an intracellular bacterium that replicates primarily in the cytosol of the phagocytes. The main virulence attribute of F. tularensis is the type 6 secretion system (T6SS) and its effectors that promote escape from the

We present a young pregnant woman who developed ulceroglandular tularaemia following a bite wound from a kitten. She grew Francisella tularensis from the ulcer. While awaiting bacterial culture results and serology for Bartonella, she was treated with azithromycin, with resolution of fever and axillary tenderness. Treatment recommendations for tularemia are either gentamicin or doxycycline, both of which can be perilous to the fetus. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report on the macrolide susceptibility of North American isolates of this organism has been underappreciated. The una

BACKGROUND: Stargardt disease (SD) is characterized by the accumulation of the age-pigment lipofuscin in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and subsequent neuroretinal degeneration. The disease leads to vision loss early in life. Here, we investigate age-dependent ultrastructural changes in three SD mouse models: albino Abca4-/- and pigmented Abca4-/- and Abca4-/-.Rdh8-/- mice. Since we found indications for oxidative stress primarily in albino SD mice, we tested RPE melanin for its antioxidative capabilities.
METHODS: SD mouse eyes were investigated by light, fluorescence and electron micr

Tularaemia, caused by Francisella tularensis, is an endemic zoonosis frequently occurring in southwest Germany. Since 2005 there is an increase in the number of reported cases of tularaemia in Germany. We report on two cases of ulceroglandular tularaemia and one case of glandular tularaemia that occurred in the summer of 2012 and 2013 in two counties in the Federal State of Baden-Wuerttemberg. Bacteria were transmitted through tick bites, which to date has only rarely been reported in Germany. Inadequate treatment of the patients and an aggravation of clinical symptoms were caused by a delay b

The study describes four cases of tularaemia - one developed after contact with rabbits and three developed after an arthropod bite. Due to non-specific clinical symptoms, accurate diagnosis of tularaemia may be difficult. The increasing contribution of the arthropod vectors in the transmission of the disease indicates that special effort should be made to apply sensitive and specific diagnostic methods for tularaemia, and to remind health-care workers about this route of Francisella tularensis infections. The advantages and disadvantages of various diagnostic methods - molecular, serological

Tularaemia has mainly been a sporadic disease in Norway. In 2011, 180 persons (3.7 per 100,000 population) were diagnosed with tularaemia. This article describes the epidemiological and clinical features of tularaemia cases during a year with exceptionally high tularaemia incidence. Data from the national reference laboratory for tularaemia combined with epidemiological data from the Norwegian Surveillance System for Communicable Diseases (MSIS) were used. The incidence of tularaemia varied greatly between counties, but almost every county was involved. The majority (77.8 %) of the cases were

Few population-based data are available on factors associated with pneumonic and ulceroglandular type B tularaemia. We conducted a case-control study during a large epidemic in 2000. Laboratory-confirmed case patients were identified through active surveillance and matched control subjects (age, sex, residency) from the national population information system. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. A conditional logistic regression model addressing missing data with Bayesian full-likelihood modelling included 227 case patients and 415 control subjects; reported mosquito bi

Tularaemia has been mandatorily notifiable in France since October 2002. The surveillance aims to detect early any infection possibly due to bioterrorism and to follow up disease trends. We report the results of national surveillance from 2002 to 2012. A case is defined as a patient with clinical presentation suggestive of tularaemia and biological confirmation of infection or an epidemiological link with a biologically confirmed case. Clinical, biological and epidemiological data are collected using a standardised notification form. From 2002 to 2012, 433 cases were notified, with a median ag

BACKGROUND: Tularaemia is a rare arthropod-borne zoonotic infection with 20 to 70 new cases being seen each year in France. Cutaneous ulceration and regional lymphadenopathy are the classical dermatological signs. Diagnosis of atypical forms is more complex.
OBSERVATION: A 48-year-old woman was admitted for an erythematous papular alopecic lesion of the scalp accompanied by fever, chills and cervical lymphadenopathy. Initial antibiotic therapy for 20 days with amoxicillin clavulanate was ineffective. The patient's history included an episode of hunting in the forest three days before the onse

AIMS: To analyse the V1 region of the 16S rDNA gene by a universal pyrosequencing protocol to identify and subtype Francisella in 31 strains from a repository collection and 96 patient isolates.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Pyrosequencing was used to determine the nucleotide sequence of PCR amplification products of the variable region (V1) of the 16S rDNA from 31 repository strains and 96 isolates from Swedish patients with ulceroglandular tularaemia. Pyrosequencing resulted in a 37 nucleotide sequence, specific for Francisella sp., for all repository strains and patient samples analysed. In additio

INTRODUCTION: Although tularemia is a long-known disease, its significance had diminished over the last decades in Middle Europe. However, over the past years, there is new evidence suggesting that tularemia has re-emerged in Germany. In 2007, the highest number of human cases for almost 50 years has been notified. Beside typical vectors, new ways of transmission seem to gain significance. So far, mosquito bite-transmitted tularemia has only been known from Scandinavia but not from Middle Europe.
CASE REPORT: We report the first case of a 1-year-old toddler from Southwestern Germany with mosq

A retrospective study of clinical tularaemia in an emergent area in Sweden is presented. 234 patients seen during the y 2000-2004 were studied, using case files and a questionnaire. There was a predominance of ulceroglandular tularaemia (89%), occurring in late summer and early autumn, reflecting the dominance of mosquito-borne transmission. The incubation period varied from a few hours to 11 d, with a median of 3 d. Cutaneous manifestations of tularaemia, apart from primary lesions, were noted in 43% of the cases. Coughing was common, even in patients with ulceroglandular tularaemia, supporti

A retrospective analysis to evaluate the clinical use of a diagnostic PCR for Francisella tularensis in patients with suspected ulceroglandular tularaemia was performed. 154 samples, 129 from patients with definitive tularaemia and 25 from patients where tularaemia could be ruled out, were analysed. The diagnostic PCR had a specificity of 96%, a sensitivity of 78.3%, and a Positive Predictive Value of 99%. Especially samples from encrusted lesions, even up to 4 weeks old, in patients with tularaemia, were PCR positive to a high degree when taken properly. The diagnostic PCR is useful in suspec

We report the first case in Norway of a man who developed ulceroglandular tularaemia following a cat bite. If after feline contact, patients develop skin and soft-tissue infections that fail to respond to therapy with penicillin, physicians should consider the possibility of tularaemia. Our patient was successfully treated with ciprofloxacin, which is effective against Francisella tularensis and most pathogens associated with feline infections. A greater awareness of infections following a cat bite is important for recognising this uncommon condition.

In various human intracellular bacterial diseases, an increase of the proportion of circulating Vgamma9Vdelta2 T cells has been observed. The prevalence of the finding among infected subjects and the time course of the elevation remain to be investigated. In the present study, comprising blood samples from a large number of cases of ulceroglandular tularaemia, the percentage of Vgamma9Vdelta2 T cells within the first week of onset of disease (5.3 +/- 0.7% (mean +/- s.e.m.)) did not differ from that of control subjects (5.3 +/- 0. 8%). Thereafter, percentages increased rapidly and within the in

Direct contact with rodents or their faeces is a well-known risk factor for contracting tularaemia in Norway. Both insects and ticks can act as vectors of tularaemia, but transmission by this route has not previously been described in this country. We report three cases of serologically confirmed ulceroglandular tularaemia on a small island in Southern Norway, an area in which tularaemia has not previously been known to occur. Tick bites preceded infection in two of the patients. The third patient may also have become infected through a tick or insect bite. Diagnosis was made late in all cases
