The purpose of this report is to bring attention to a rare variety of non-descended testis which may be easily overlooked. Between 1996 and 2006 diagnostic laparoscopy was performed for non-palpable testes in 209 children with 229 impalpable testes. Eight abdominal testes were encountered in seven patients located in the sub-renal position; the vas was found to be looping in an upward direction to join the epididymis. Laparoscopic Fowler-Stephen procedure was attempted in all these cases, with the loss of two testes and salvage of six.

PURPOSE: We dissected prevailing assumptions about cryptorchidism and reviewed data that support and reject these assumptions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five questions about cryptorchidism and the risk of testicular cancer were identified because of their implications in parent counseling and clinical management. Standard search techniques through MEDLINE were used to identify all relevant English language studies of the questions being examined. Each of the 5 questions was then examined in light of the existing data.

Neonatal testicular tumors and intrauterine testicular torsions are very rare. The presented case is the first describing intrauterine torsion of a descended testis with a teratomatous tumor. Immediately after birth, right hemiscrotal swelling was seen in a preterm male newborn. Surgical intervention showed extravaginal testicular torsion and a highly differentiated testicular teratoma with haemorrhagic infarction. The testis was removed (orchiectomy). Anomalies of the epididymis are most commonly associated with an undescended testis but also found occasionally in a normally descended testis. Our 11-year-old patient presented with an acute scrotum and Doppler ultrasound that suggested epididymitis. Painful symptoms required scrotal exploration with the finding of a torsion and infarction of the epididymis. The etiology of the torsion was an abnormal attachment of the epididymis to the testis. Torsion of the epididymis has not previously been reported.

PURPOSE: About 20% of all cryptorchid testes are nonpalpable. Although surgical exploration was previously the method of choice for management, laparoscopy from the inferior edge of the umbilicus has been established as a useful method of finding a testis that is nonpalpable.
