PURPOSE: Tularemia is a zoonotic disease caused by Francisella tularensis, a gram-negative, facultative coccobacillus. Tularemia may present with symptoms of tonsillopharyngitis, such as sore throat and neck swelling, or with symptoms of conjunctivitis, such as redness in the eyes. The aim is to emphasize the importance of considering tularemia in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with these complaints.
METHODS: The study was designed as a retrospective descriptive study including 10 patients who were diagnosed with tularemia and treated between November 2023 and August 2025.

Tularemia, also known as rabbit fever, caused by Francisella tularensis, is re-emerging in the Northern Hemisphere and in particular in Europe in recent years. It is a bacterial zoonotic, arthropod-borne, air-borne, food- and water-borne disease and the multiple routes of infection result in six typical clinical pictures (ulceroglandular, glandular, oculoglandular, oropharyngeal, typhoidal, and pneumonic) along with several other uncommon presentations, potentially affecting any body site. In addition, due to the ease of airborne transmission, F. tularensis is a category A agent for bioterrori

This report highlights an uncommon presentation of tularemia in a high-risk pediatric patient to increase awareness and broaden the differential diagnosis among clinicians. A previously healthy eight-year-old female presented to the emergency department multiple times within two weeks with nonspecific flu-like symptoms, worsening purulent conjunctival injection, fever, and left-sided facial swelling. She was initially diagnosed with several conditions, including corneal abrasion, preseptal cellulitis, and dacryocystitis, and was treated with antibiotics without symptom resolution. Upon admissi

Background: In recent years, there has been a significant increase in cases of tularemia, a rare zoonotic disease caused by Francisella tularensis, in Europe. Methods: To investigate the epidemiological, clinical, and therapeutic characteristics of tularemia patients in Germany, we performed a retrospective evaluation of tularemia cases treated between 2010 and 2025 at selected treatment centers of the Permanent Working Group of Competence and Treatment Centers for High Consequence Infectious Diseases (STAKOB) at the Robert Koch Institute. Results: A total of 65 patients (median age: 48.5 year

Tularemia, caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis, is a zoonotic disease that has been reported in many countries across the globe. It may manifest in many forms, like pneumonic, oropharyngeal, glandular, ulceroglandular, or oculoglandular. In Poland, one of the most common types of tularemia is ulceroglandular. Typical symptoms of ulceroglandular tularemia include painful ulcers at the site of the insect or animal bite, along with systemic flu-like symptoms. Tularemia is generally effectively treated with appropriate antibiotics, however, frequent misdiagnosis and subsequent improper

BACKGROUND Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome is a unilateral granulomatous palpebral conjunctivitis associated with preauricular, submandibular, and cervical lymphadenopathies. Several infectious diseases can cause Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome, usually with a conjunctival entry. The most common underlying pathology is cat scratch disease, followed by the oculoglandular form of tularemia. Diagnosis is usually a serious challenge as these infections are themselves rare. On the other hand, Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome may be a rare manifestation of more common disorders (eg, tuberculosis,

Background and Objectives: Parinaud oculoglandular syndrome (POS) is unilateral granulomatous follicular conjunctivitis with ipsilateral afferent lymphadenopathy, primarily caused by cat-scratch disease, tularemia, and sporotrichosis. We report a case of POS in which Bartonella DNA was detected using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in corneal and conjunctival specimens. Methods: A 29-year-old man, who started keeping a stray cat two months prior, became aware of right preauricular lymphadenopathy and right ocular conjunctival hyperemia one month prior. Subsequently, he developed a fever of app

Tularemia is a severe zoonotic disease caused by gram-negative bacillus Francisella tularensis. F. tularensis species account for most cases in the United States of America (USA). Apart from the six classical clinical presentations that include glandular, ulceroglandular, oculoglandular, pharyngeal, typhoidal, and pneumonic, skeletal disease is uncommon. Rare clinical manifestations include primary and secondary skin rashes, erythema nodosum, and erythema multiforme. Infrequent skeletal manifestations have presented as osteomyelitis and prosthetic joint infections. Prosthetic joint infection b

Tularemia caused by Gram-negative, coccobacillus bacterium, Francisella tularensis, is a highly infectious zoonotic disease. Human cases have been reported mainly from the United States, Nordic countries like Sweden and Finland, and some European and Asian countries. Naturally, the disease occurs in several vertebrates, particularly lagomorphs. Type A (subspecies tularensis) is more virulent and causes disease mainly in North America; type B (subspecies holarctica) is widespread, while subspecies mediasiatica is present in central Asia. F. tularensis is a possible bioweapon due to its lethalit

BACKGROUND: In this study, we presented two cases of late diagnosed complicated oculoglandular tularemia and reviewed the clinical features of oculoglandular tularemia in cases reported in the last ten years.
METHOD: Tularemia was diagnosed when serum microagglutination test (MAT) was ≥ 1/160 titer or when there was at least a four-fold increase in MAT titers measured over a two-week interval. We searched the oculoglandular tularemia cases reported in the last 10 years in the PubMed and Google Academic engines.
RESULTS: Case 1 (19 M) and case 2 (15 M) had complaints of fever and burning in t

Tularemia is a zoonotic bacterial infectious disease caused by a gram-negative coccobacillus namely Francisella tularensis. In humans, disease leads to several different clinical forms (ulceroglandular, glandular, oculoglandular, respiratory, typhoidal and oropharyngeal). Since the main mode of transmission of the disease to humans in Türkiye is by drinking water contaminated with F.tularensis, the oropharyngeal form is the most common clinical manifestation. Since tularemia cases with pregnancy are rare, the literatüre about maternal and fetal complications of tularemia is sparse. In this rep

Tularemia is a zoonotic infection caused by Francisella tularensis. Tularemia has several clinical form in humans, including ulceroglandular, pneumonic, oropharyngeal, oculoglandular, and systemic (typhoidal). Tularemia may develop granulomatous and suppurative lesions, especially in the affected regional lymph nodes and various organs. Patients with hepatic involvement typically have elevated transaminase levels, hepatomegaly and rarely jaundice. Histologically, there are typically suppurative microabscesses with occasional surrounding macrophages. Rarely, hepatic granuloma can develop due to

Parinaud's oculoglandular syndrome (POGS) is defined as unilateral granulomatous conjunctivitis and facial lymphadenopathy. The aims of the current study are to describe a case of POGS with uveitis due to flea-borne typhus (FBT) and to present a diagnostic and therapeutic approach to POGS. The patient, a 38-year old man, presented with persistent unilateral eye pain, fever, rash, preauricular and submandibular lymphadenopathy, and laboratory findings of FBT: hyponatremia, elevated transaminase and lactate dehydrogenase levels, thrombocytopenia, and hypoalbuminemia. His condition rapidly improv

A 60-year-old man was admitted to a university hospital complaining of progressive orbital cellulitis and lymph-node swelling. Empiric treatment with sulbactam/ampicillin failed. The patient's cervical lymph nodes were removed and histologically examined. Based on the pathological results, acute tuberculosis was suspected but could not be confirmed by further analyses. During an extended screening of agents relevant for differential diagnosis, tularemia was diagnosed serologically and by means of a polymerase chain reaction test, which identified the bacterial subspecies Francisella tularensis

Tularemia is a bacterial disease of humans, wild, and domestic animals. Francisella tularensis, which is a Gram-negative coccobacillus-shaped bacterium, is the causative agent of tularemia. Recently, an increase in the number of human tularemia cases has been noticed in several countries around the world. It has been reported mostly from North America, several Scandinavian countries, and certain Asian countries. The disease spreads through vectors such as mosquitoes, horseflies, deer flies, and ticks. Humans can acquire the disease through direct contact of sick animals, consumption of infecte

BACKGROUND: Tularemia, a zoonotic disease caused by Francisella tularensis, can cause a broad spectrum of disease in humans including six major clinical presentations: the ulceroglandular, glandular, oculoglandular, oropharyngeal, typhoidal and pneumonic form. The epidemiology and ecology and thus transmission of tularemia are complex, depending on conditions unique to specific locations.
CASE SERIES AND METHODS: Thirteen cases with different forms of the disease and one very rare case of a myocarditis are reported, discussed, and reviewed within the scope of current literature.
CONCLUSION:

BACKGROUND: Tularaemia is a zoonotic infectious disease caused by Francisella tularensis, an aerobic, uncapsulated, gram-negative coccobacillus. Several case reports have appeared on the dermatological manifestations of tularaemia, but relatively few longer-term studies are available.
AIM: To identify skin features of tularaemia that aid in its diagnosis.
METHODS: In total, 168 patients (68 male, 100 female) diagnosed with tularaemia were retrospectively examined. All dermatological data for these patients were evaluated.
RESULTS: Of the 168 patients, 149 (88.69%) had tularaemia of the orop
